When I was in my twenties, I loved being right. I knew everything for a good part of my twenties, so I was right a lot. It was awesome. Now that I am in my ripe old thirties, it usually isn't as fun because the consequences are bigger.
Twenties: I told you you shouldn't have had three long island iced teas.
Thirties: I told you you shouldn't have had children with that man.
I didn't say either of those things (I will admit I wanted to), but you get the idea.
Recently I posted about disagreeing with DH about re-hiring a guy. He had to let him go today (after a couple of days back) because we didn't hear him typing for about 5 hours, checked his browser history and found out that he had visited 500 webpages a day (every day back) that were unrelated to anything he does. When confronted, he claimed that this is how he works. No acknowledgement. No apology. I think we just have different definitions of work.
Anyhow, I was right, but now the guy that got fired is pissed, his family is going to suffer, and it caused DH and everyone else at work stress. I don't feel responsible for any of this, it just makes being right less fun. As in no fun.
What do you think? Is being right less fun than it used to be? When has being right stunk for you?

Being right is always awesome, it just doesn't always feel awesome

Being right isn't about fun. It's about maturity. You have good judgement.

Wait until you do, the older they get, the smarter you are! That's the blessing worth waiting for. DS is sorry he bought the money pit car, it's cost him thousands of dollars, and brings him little joy now. What a nasty lesson.

Maybe you should work less on being right and more on your persuasion and communication skills. Since you are right so often when others aren't, you must have some flaw that keeps you from preventing their wrongs.

But of course she was ASKING for someone to put her down. Could it be she was asking for people to share similar stories? Nah.....

Could it be she was asking for people to share similar stories? Nah..... We all know what she WANTED. She wanted people to back her up. That is what 90% of the stories are on here. People are missing something major IRL and they come to a forum about money to get a "you go girl" reinforcement.. I'm not here for that purpose. While you think my advice is putting her down, I think it is actually very valuable. Someone with great ideas accomplishes nothing if they can't express them and convince others they are great.

Very true. Being right isn't enough if all you get are "I told you so" rights. This was one of my life lessons.

But what if you're working with someone who's stubborn, & insists on doing things THEIR way, even when you know their way is bad? (I think most of us have had those type of coworkers....)

Sometimes the only way to learn and absorb something is to make the mistake and learn from it, not from the words of others. Thus the question on whether or not susanb has children and is acquainted with raising them.

Have you considered that your idea got lost because many people took offense to your delivery?

The key question is that you didn't mention is was he getting his work done? If so, who cares how many browser pages he visited as long as he was getting his work done. Was he supposed to stare at the wall instead?

Was he supposed to stare at the wall instead? He wanted to be given more tasks when he came back so that he could "show us what he could do" or, in other words, get a raise. He was PM on a big project that wouldn't be done for months.

Have you considered that your idea got lost because many people took offense to your delivery? You miss the most important lesson of the day. It is not how persuasive you are on some online forum, it matters what you do in interactions IRL. Pointing out that your "poor me" story will get more thumbs up than my "welcome to real word" post is not surprising at all.
