My engagement ring is a solitaire alexandrite. Any ring, even a plascit diamond ring from a vending machine can be an engagement ring. What makes it an engagement ring is the intent with which it was given and received, nothing else matters.
Now I have to figure out an excuse to be able to travel to the Carolinas in 6 months, to crash your wedding, but not go in a year for my cousin's wedding. (I adore him. Not such a big fan of his fiance.)

Not.YM.Approved. Denny's is more expensive than McD. Lets see.......the money she saves by going to McD and not Dennys can be invested at 11% which then will end up being 10 million in 12 years. See the ROI? She can even buy rentals with that much money!!! No Lie, his step-brother's wedding was catered by APPLEBEES!!! so the denny's comment has me laughing... his sister has made me promise not to make her go through that again!!!! No what you need is a KFC reception where you order the guests to bring it to the reception for the buffet. Trust me it was not near as much fun as it sounds. Congrats!!!!!

Ohhhhhh you need to sign up for one of those cheesy wedding shows...what is it called 4 weddings. It's where 4 strangers go to each others weddings and give them scores and the winner gets an awesome honeymoon! But you also get to put up with a lot of fake nicey nice and then snark behind your back. That is recorded and put on tv for the world to see. But it's a FREE honeymoon if you win. Oh and Congratulations!!!!! And I thought it was YM approved if you just ran a credit report?

Congrats CarolinaKat! I forget half of the YM do nots because as long as you are reasonable, who cares? I don't think God is going to hand out medals for extreme frugality or for buying reasonable cars when you enter heaven. You are mistaken.

'Cause they sound a lot alike!

I think you can have a YM approved wedding, even if you buy a dress (as long as you don't spend more than $200 on it and can wear it again) and get married somewhere other than the courthouse. Your back yard is a perfectly acceptable venue for a wedding. Or maybe you could try the new fad of a "flash" wedding- as long as you keep your guests to 10 or fewer (which is a requirement for a YM approved wedding), where you pick a place you like, but don't schedule your wedding there or pay any of their fees- just show up and have a 5 minute wedding in front of your favorite picture in the art museum, and then be prepared to run away (but don't warn your guests about that part) when the security guards come to kick you out. ;D

Proposal story for Firebird: He kept insisting that we go out to lunch. I did not feel like going out to lunch and wanted to go back to sleep. But then he convinced me to go because we needed food for the doggie, so i reluctantly agree to go. Well we go to the resturant where we had our first date (and were we go all the time because it's our favorite place) and I got distracted watching the olympics on TV. Then I turn around and he's down on the floor on one knee with a ring. Me: What are you doing down there on the floor? DF: Can't I ask you to marry me? Me: Of course I'll marry you silly! He ended up getting me a ring that I had liked when we were looking at rings a few weeks ago, its got three blue diamonds surronded by tiny white diamonds. Very non-traditional, but very pretty and very me. Although a couple of people have checked to make sure that it IS in fact an engagement ring! Aww That's very sweet! DH proposed in "our place" too but his was more spontaneous.

Fancy wedding?! Your marriage is doomed. You will be divorced before the ink dries on your marriage license.

But while we're on the subject, do you want some koi fish for a wedding present? I need to get rid of some.

beachbum: Trust me, this will be one of those times in my life when I regret the fact that I don't drink. Shane, I only ever really want a drink when I am with them and they think drinking is evil and no one around them is allowed to do it. They even think caffiene is wrong and lie about the coffee and think that no one will notice. When people start complaining about headaches they act like they don't know why. So as a 47 year old adult I am reduced to sneaking a cup of coffee when no one is looking. For the record the last wedding we went to in his family it had a cash bar for the softdrink type things. Completely serious.

I dunno, Karaboo's story is pretty good too. Wasn't that her brother's wedding they just had in the backyard. In Texas. In June? Or was it July?

Congrats CarolinaKat! I forget half of the YM do nots because as long as you are reasonable, who cares? I don't think God is going to hand out medals for extreme frugality or for buying reasonable cars when you enter heaven. You are mistaken. Optimist confused. How can FB be possessed by the spirit of Doxie and the spirit of Phil?

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Im having a non-ym approved wedding as well! My dad and stepmom booked the inn we all liked on Monday, reserved two nights in a suite for us, and offered to pay for the invitations since stepmom wants them done "professionally."
If i had to pay for my wedding it would be a backyard party. Someone else wants to help? Let's do this shit right!
Congrats again!

Your ring sounds beautiful! Mine is a light amethyst with a rose gold band. It doesn't matter what it is so long as you love it!
