DH said if they keep changing the rules eventually I am going to be back in a car seat. They already make boosters that fit someone my size. I want to see. I am 5'2 and 115lb, do they fit me too?

My bitch isn't so much with the booster seats, which are bad enough, but with the child seats. Yeah, I know, I know...it's for the kids safety...., but seriously have any of you ever had to travel any distance with your shoulders and hips pinned tightly back to something like that??? I guarantee you wouldn't tolerate it for long. Yet, we force our little kids to do it and for long distances. How nice of us. One of my old cars had a five point harness in the driver's seat. Just like a child seat. It's really not that bad. It was more comfortable than an over the shoulder lap belt actually.

I am not a parent but I have to say - seriously? Until they are 8 yrs old. That just seems a bit extreme to me. I am hoping there really is a good reason for this. ETA: I know I would want my child to be safe so I would do whatever was deemed necessary but pretty soon 13 yr old kids are going to be riding around in a booster seat a seat belt is not designed to fit a 6 year old child correctly

It sucks that they have found a way to reduce the number of deaths by the #1 killer of children? Booster seats for elementary school kids are cheap. If you were an emergancy pick up for our kids, we would buy you are a booster seat to keep in the car. My parents have babysat all their grandkids at one point or another, swapping out booster seats is so easy (especially compared to car seats). We bought a "back up" carseat for anyone who is watching DS. He's spending the night Saturday night with his "church Grandparents" and of course we will give them a car seat so they can bring him to church on Sunday morning. Yes it is a big deal if the kid isn't use to being in a booster, but overall, not as big of a deal as people are making it.

Well 'we' all survived but "WE" didn't all survive. Car accidents kill children. The reason I never was killed while not in a car seat is because we were just lucky enough to not be in a car accident. I'm sure if you go back 20 or 30 or 40 years, you will find stories of children being killed in car accidents, and some of those deaths wouldn't have been changed by a car seat (car hurdling off a cliff), but some of those deaths might have been minor injuries with better restraints. Also, as a country we spend more time in cars than we did 30 years ago. (Being that I am 30 and was in a booster seat until I was 4 or so). We also travel at higher rates of speed (in general). There are more vehicles on the road as well. Your cars didn't have air bags 20 years ago and didn't have seat belts 40 years ago. But I bet there is no way in hell you would buy a car without airabgs today. I read all the time on this board about people not driving such and such a car because it isn't safe. So, why in the world would you not spend $20 for a feature to make your child or Grandchild - I would assume someone who means more to you than anything in the world - safer. Seatbelts aren't designed to fit children. Notice all the people who are "freaking" out about this are people who don't have kids. THose who have kids realize it isn't a huge deal. DS was in an infant carrier carseat until he was 11 months. He is now in a convertable and he will eventually transition to a back booster that converts to a regualr booster. His little sister will use everyone one of those seats - assuming she isn't a huge chunky monkey - but our infant carrier goes to 30 pounds. So we should be good. I had a car seat and booster growing up and I'm 30. Once again, this is not as big of a deal as people think it is.
