A little north like Gilroy/Morgan Hill? You don't have to answer if you're uncomfortable sharing your home town.

The western US has some absolutely phenomenal natural treasures. Zion Canyon, Utah is truly spectacular. As is Arches national park, Utah. (Check out the real life arch that appears on the Utah license plates.) Bryce Canyon, Utah is pretty cool, too. Hoodoo's anyone? Then there is the opportunity to peek into an obvious earthquake fault line near Mammoth, CA. Don't miss the nearby Devil's Postpile rock formation. Who knew that rock could bend and form those interesting shapes? And how about the dozens and dozens of petroglyphs (prehistoric art chipped into stone) at Grimes Point, near Fallon, NV. And Lake Tahoe. The fact that area residents call it simply "The lake" says it all. The salt flats along I-80 just inside the western border of Utah are a one of a kind sight. Or a drive along the Pacific coast, anywhere from Southern California to northern Washington. Who could miss a side trip to check out Mount. St. Helens? Vulcanology up close and personalized at visitor centers overlooking the crater. Did you know the both CA and NV have geysers, ala Old Faithful? The most well know and easiest to get to is near Calistoga, CA.
Then there are the man made treasures. Try to taste wine at every winery in California. All 1,200+ of them. Call me when you get done, I'll drive you home.

Hey, we were in K Falls this weekend! And Crater Lake 2 weeks ago. The drive all the way around the Lake should finally be open. There was still snow on it when we were there!!!!

Hit and run from Crater Lake! It is just STUNNING!!! We have spent the last two days hiking and taking the boat tour. GRG, you are absolutely right. I was just overwhelmed by the emotions and this "dream come true". For those of you who are nearby it is SO worth the trip! And there is still snow! There just isn't enough time to do all that you guys have mentioned. We went to Bryce Canyon, Zion and Grand Canyon on our first (and last) trip out west till this one, eight years ago. So DS3 was six then. I promise I will wave all the way down the CA coast LOL! We leave Crater Lake tomorrow to drive down to San Francisco. Then our friends drive on to southern CA, and we fly to NY to see my friends and family.) I really envy those of you who can visit these sites in just a few days! ETA: Phoenix, I may live in France, but I'm still American.

Flying from SFO to NY huh. Just look down and wave about 10 minutes out from the airport. I'll be the goofy guy mooning the plane.

Yeah, I really should have thought that one through a little more. It turns out there are quite a few planes taking off from SFO heading east, and even with light marine layer clouds, you'll get a really hard to explain sun burn mooning all of them. C'est la vie.

I saw Dark mooning me!!! Dark, you're the one with the mole on the right cheek, right?! LOL I haven't been very communicative lately because at the ripe age of 52, I did the dumbest thing I have ever done in my life. Literally. DH ALWAYS puts stuff on the roof of the car and then drives the car and it falls off. I have been berating him about that for DECADES. So, we stopped at the beach in CA on 101, at Freshwater Lagoon. The guys took a while, so I pulled out my knapsack (ie my handbag when I travel) for a cigarette and put my knapsack on the trunk. The guys come back, we drive off. With my ENTIRE LIFE in the knapsack that is sitting on the trunk of the car. CCs, driver's license, car registration, French "green card", both my "health insurance" cards, plus 500 euros that I intended to deposit at the bank. Then I changed my mind and decided I should carry the cash instead. All gone . When we get to Eureka I figure it out, I totally freak out. DH's friends take charge of DS3 and we drive back to Freshwater Lagoon. Gone. We drive back again in the morning. Gone again. DH's friend's wife lent me her phone, I called every police station, sheriff's station, etc etc etc, nothing. All. Night. Long. When we got back to Eureka the next morning I filled out a police report. Needless to say I was, and still am, totally gutted. It definitely put a damper on the end of the road trip. I am working hard to not let it ruin our entire vacation, but I am still totally freaking out. I keep hoping for a miracle. I get that somebody would want to use the cards and / or steal the cash, but the rest is TOTALLY useless to them, but certainly not to me. I am also concerned that I cannot board a flight back to France without that "green card". I haven't yet decided whether to "wing it" or address it with the French consulate in NY.

Oh, debt, I'm so sorry for the loss of your knapsack. What an awful thing to have happen after such a perfect road trip! Hugs, hon.

Everybody is asking me why I kept the French stuff in my wallet / bag (ie knapsack) when I didn't need it in the US. No good answer except that this has NEVER happened to me before. I've learned my lesson, for sure.

Something similar happened to my sister and me years ago in Florence, except that her rucksack got stolen. Since I only had a little hip pack I too had stuff lost. However, sis lost her passport.
So from that experience: Make several copies of the police report and then head straight for the consulate and get a (temporary) replacement card -> requires copy of report. The airline may request a copy of the report as well, especially if the credit card you booked the trip with wen missing. If you have travel insurance you can forget about getting the cash back, but all documented cost such as replacement card, additional airline fees if any, a camera if that was in your rucksack will potentially be reimbursed. Last but not least, your mantra for the remaining days becomes "I only lost things. My memories remain and I have time to make more" Refuse to give in. If a camera is gone, get yourself one of those disposable ones and go out and have fun.

Put up an add on Craigslist for the area you lost the bag in. You'll get some scammers, but maybe someone will find the discarded bag with your documents and recognize that it is important stuff and be looking to return it.
Yes, you have to burn a day or two at the consulate.
Sooooo sorry that this happened.

Hmmm - were you by a river when you lost the pack (or could the person who took have wandered off to a river?) humboldt.craigslist.org/laf/3170589914.htmlI don't know anything about the post/poster on craigslist, but it might be worth a try. Backpack = knapsack

We are going to Oregon over labor day weekend to throw a surprise party for my aunt and uncle. We won't have time to get to crater lake but we will do the coast. I'm showing DF Silver Creek falls this time as well. Plus, Tillamook ice cream!

Awww, Debt! I was reading about your wonderful trip and then I got to page two. I'm so sorry such a great time has been thrown off for you. I will be praying that a good Samaritan finds your knapsack and turns it in - even if the money is gone before they found your documents. I also hope you are ok.
How do you prove who you are when this happens?

OMG this is unbelievable ... we were in Humboldt County! I will definitely give this a try!
I have not yet tried the consulate because I am in CT now at my best childhood's friends house, but I was planning to try once I get back to NY in a couple of days.
OMG Rockit!!! Wouldn't that be amazing?! I would never have thought of Craigslist!!!
ETA: POM, DH had my passport (thank Gd!)
