Hey friends DH didn't want me to post about being away but given his FB postings, here goes.
We arrived in Palm Springs CA last Monday to visit DH's best childhood friend and his wife. Spent 48 hours there then got on the road.
The point of this trip was to get to Crater Lake. DS3 saw it in a library book when he was six or seven, was just enchanted. Every summer we promised him we'd take him there one day. Then DH had his accident, and he decided one day was this summer. Tomorrow is the big day.
I knocked two HUGE big-ticket items off my bucket list along the way. One was Death Valley National Park. DH's friend said, no way in the summer. But there was an alternate route to Lone Pine via DVNP. We had plenty of food and water, so we took it.
The other one was Yosemite. We spent just a day there, but at least we saw it.
Obviously, I would have preferred to spend more time in both. But we got there. I hope to go back to both one day.
We also went to Mono Lake, then to Bodie this morning.
Now we're in Klamath Falls. We hit the local Safeway, bought food and wine and watched the Olympics from our hotel room. It felt great not to eat in a restaurant for once!
Tomorrow, Crater Lake. Before we left France, a friend said, so let me get this right. You organized this whole trip based on something your DS3 saw in a library book six or seven years ago? We said, yup, that's right. She said, wow, he's 14 now, he'll remember this trip for the rest of his life.
I certainly hope so LOL!
When we drove into Yosemite via the eastern route, the Tioga Pass, DH's friend said, we did it, we're here. So how does it feel? I couldn't answer him, I was crying my eyes out.

You're just like DH's friend. Have you seen the film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel? The guy in the film says, it always ends well in the end. And if it hasn't ended well, well, it's not the end. Namaste (hope I'm using that correctly

Have a wonderful time at Crater Lake Debt. I was there a few years ago and it was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to.

"Have you seen the film The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel? The guy in the film says, it always ends well in the end. And if it hasn't ended well, well, it's not the end."
Not to rain on the positive vibe of this thread, I don't believe that.
Nevertheless, enjoy your trip. I remember going there when I was younger, and I still remember it fondly. I think I was about your son's age when I saw it.
This country does have a great deal of natural beauty, and it draws people in from all over the world. When I went to the Grand Canyon last year, I couldn't tell what country I was in. There were so many languages being spoken. On a side note, there was one lady there who spoke french but no english who came asking us for help, I think she had lost her companion(s). We felt bad for her, but obviously none of us spoke french. We took her to the bus and the bus driver agreed to take her to the ranger station, where they could probably help her better.
Anyway, made me think of you, since you're french and all.

I have not been to Yosemite in years. It is such a stunningly beautiful place (I learned to ski at Badger Pass). Have never been to Crater Lake (and it's not that far from here ). It's been on my list for years. And I'm reading "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" right now. Delightful book - hope the movie is as good. Your trip sounds wonderful. Glad you are having a great time..

Oh, Debt, kudos for doing it!!!! What a wonderful example you are setting for your kids...and for us. We all have dreams that we put off for one reason or another and wait for that elusive "someday". But, we need to realize that sometimes, "someday" doesn't come if you wait too long. My YDS, my baby(!!!), just turned 14. ODS is 16. I only have them for a few more moments in time and then they'll be off living their lives. I have a rather lengthy list of things I/we/they want to do "someday". I better get planning...

We did Crater Lake -> Redwood National Forest -> up the OR coast for our honeymoon. I agree, we live in a beautiful country!
We're off to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons next week. I'm beyond excited!

...debt, did you all approach Crater Lake on 62 or 138? I ask, because as beautiful as the park and lake is, that straight shot west bound on 138 is memorable in its own right... especially for boys...

I was in Stowe, Vermont last weekend. Sure, for some of you, the Green Mountains are amateurs, but they were still absolutely stunning in all of their summer glory.
Nothing improves one's attitude like getting out of your usual environs -- even if just for a day or two. ;D

Welcome to my area of the globe. Enjoy the lake. It is only about 100 miles from my house, but we haven't made it there yet.

I always found it odd (and ironic) that the sites you never see are the ones closest to where you live. I wanted to see Arcadia national partk when I lived in Maine, but never made it up there. When I lived in Indiana I never went to the Indy 500. It's the same with my relatives in Florida. They never go to the beach. We go to the beach more than they do.
And yes, there's a reason for the song "America the Beautiful."

Debt, Glad you and the family are enjoying the West! I think I was probably around 10 when I went to Crater Lake (and back in those ancient times they still hadn't measured how deep it was). I never saw a lake so blue. Also being a San Diego kid, I didn't realize that you could still see snow in the summer, LOL! One caveat, they still do agricultural inspections from OR into CA so be careful about what kind of fruit/vegetables you bring back. One of the funnier memories I have of the same trip was my family being told that we could not bring all of those cheap cherries we bought in OR into CA. So my mother insisted that we eat them all...needless to say about two hours later WE HAD TO PULL OFF THE ROAD!

TLoonya, I'm not Debthaven, the OP, so I won't speak for her, but given the VERY difficult year she and her DH had, I suspect it was both the realization of the dream that pulled them through the aftermath of her DH's accident and relief at having made it. Genuine emotion hard-earned.

I'm jealous. We were up near Crater Lake a couple years ago for a two week camping trip. It's stunning.
If you drive back down along the coast wave east while you're going through the Santa Cruz area.
