I am wondering if HR got a SS #/Name mismatch warning from the IRS. The form says something to the effect that you need to verify that the name/# are correct.
It is my understanding that you may change your name if you so desire. I have a hypenated name and I can tell you that almost anyone will accept 1st last name, 2nd last name or correct last name. Many merchants only have so many spaces for name so they will truncate. Many won't accept hypen either. I always use full name matching SS card on my tax return.
I am almost positive that DH's company uses a nickname instead of his legal name with his SS# on his 1099. It has never been rejected. DH is going to change his legal name when he gets around to it (his real 1st name is too Ethnic). If/when he changes his last name I am seriously contemplating changing the order of my last names to be his last name, my maiden name with no hypen.

My mother attained her highest degree while she was married to my father. She still uses his surname occasionally though they divorced and she remarried 21 years ago. I doubt anyone can make you change your surname but I can see HR having a beef with someone if they are not going by their legal name.

I don't think in our state anyone can make you change it. I had a co-worker who was only married 18 months but she decided to keep her exDH's last name because she liked it better than her maiden name. And I've had other friends who married divorced men who were annoyed that his ex-wife still had his name, too, making 2 Mrs ABC's - although I don't know why that bothered them. DH's parents divorced thirty years ago. His Dad already had a fiance who was adamant that his wife had to change her name so she would be the only Mrs So&So. She made him ask the judge and the judge basically said what Rockit's judge said but the order was the boiler plate in the OP. She could but she didn't have to. Well she had spent more than half her life with that name and it matched her three kids so she didn't want to change it and he found out the hard way she didn't have to. Thirty years later it still pisses DH's Dad's wife off to no end.

I had it written into my divorce decree that I could go back to my maiden name, but I've never gone and legally done the change on everything. I just wanted it put in there so I didn't have to go to court later on if I wanted to change it.

Actually, I can understand both sides. DFs ex didnt take her name back because it has criminal ties but I'm considering not changing mine because I have spent many years as this and I'm not sure I wish to be the second Mrs. So and So.

In Canada it is legal for me to use either my maiden name or my previous married name. Everyone prefers consistency but it isn't a requirement. As long as I am not using one for illegal purposes not much can be said. For legal matters they go by my Social Insurance Number.

I'm thinking of going back to maiden name. My father didn't have any other children, as far as I know, so why should his name not be carried on? At least as long as I live.
