My husband calls me on the train, "Umm, honey, did you buy $490 worth of something from a popcorn place in Michigan" me - "no, why?" "We got a call from the Discover Fraud department, apparently our account is compromised..." NUTS! We have to close the account, open a new one. I have all kinds of stuff set up on autopay and will need to reconfigure Quicken, etc. AGAIN - this happened to us less than 2 years ago. Hubby had his identity stolen about 15 years ago and this crap keep cropping up. Don't tell me it's a victimless crime!

Oy. I can relate. What a PITA.
Just an FYI: my CC was hacked in May. I changed all of my recurring stuff but forgot to update the CC info on a much-needed hotel reservation at a heavily-attended, sold-out event that I'd made in April. The hotel cancelled our reservation when we were late in checking-in because the credit card number wouldn't work. So, check any reservations you might have made.

Sorry to hear this. My HSA was hacked to the tune of $230 for one pair (!) of designer jeans. I got the name of the person who did it, and because of my training, was able to find out where they lived, where they worked, their cell phone number, the IP address from which they placed the order, their criminal record, the high school they attended and a few other things. Then I called the police, made out a police report and turned it over to MasterCard (the account has no actual checks to use, but it does have a debit card, which I've never used). I got my money back, but unfortunately, because of the amount, MC declined to prosecute.

GRG - thanks for the reminder about reservations. I use my Discover card for business travel so have to update my travel profile (GRRRR!) Nancy-I feel you pain. Back when DH's identity was stolen the thieves got: 1. A pre-owned vehicle in DH's name (we have a police report on that) worth 7,500 2. A custom 2,500 sound system installed in above car 3. A 3,000 engagement ring (cost more than mine ) 4. 10,000 in various department store gift cards/certificates, purchased with newly opened accounts (Montgomery Ward, Marshall Fields, Carsons, JC Penney, Sears). All in, they racked up about 23K before I shut them down. At the time the law was the crime had to exceed 25K before it became a Federal offense. The only place that could be bothered to file a police report was the car dealership, and that was only because they had to since a phony Drivers License was provided. All along (as I'm spending dozens of hours getting the mess straightened out) we were told we didn't have any rights because we were not the victims.

And I have to add, while this is a hassle, I love Discover's customer service and their fraud prevention group!

I got my money back the same day. But I'm still ticked at the idea that 1) I'm not considered a victim. That was MY money drained from MY account. 2) Niether MC nor the police wanted to prosecute, due to the low amount of the theft. This is why people keep doing this and keep getting away with it. All of us wind up paying the price for fraud.

We've had it happen too. My check card shut down and I forgot I had several bills on autopay so they were declined because the card had been shut down.
Then recently DH had a card that should have been expired hacked and used. No charges were brought because it was only $49. I agree with Nancy that people keep doing it and get away with it because they know no one is coming after them.
Why do you think it was only $49 you stupid bank? They knew odds were good no one would notice or care!

Exactly, Drama. You are so right. I realize there is a lot of fraud, but until there is consistent and frequent prosecution, this is going to continue, and it's going to continue to be very costly.

Captain, that stinks, I am sorry you are going through that.
To those of you who think merchants or the banks should do something/prosecute....Our company gets hit with thousands of dollars in fees and expenses from credit card fraud each year. We get the victim's name on the chargeback paperwork, but we don't get the name of the criminal using a stolen credit card and an IP scrambler. Neither does the bank. Who should we report to the police? How do you suggest we find the name of these people to report or take to small claims court?

Susanb - In my case at least we had a copy of a DL in hubby's name which was issued by the state of Indiana (auto dealership took a copy of it for the "test drive"). In addition the jewelry story had video of the guy who got the engagement ring. The jewelry store refused to cooperate with us and let us, or a private investigator I was thinking of hiring, view the video.
