I quit band after my sophomore (?) year, since our band director made no attempt to hide his feelings that he got "stuck" with us. He was really the choir director, and they were everything to him, so he would arrange trips to Europe for them, and take us to Newport. Again. Several years in a row. I still got to go on the beach trip even though I wasn't in band anymore. The last trip I went on was fun--the only chaperone wanted to have "mother/daughter" time, so we didn't see her once we got off the bus, the band director went "wine tasting" and got drunk, and the bus driver didn't want anything to do with us kids. So almost all the rooms ended up being co-ed. I think we had two guys sleeping in our room. We almost got ourselves and another band group kicked out of the hotel

You mean I have to get this wild bunch back on topic?!? Yes, I was a bandie! I played clarinet. (And sax, and percussion...) Oh, and the marching band students at my school had the BEST parties. They were a fun crowd! ;D

Oh, sweet, sweet nerds.... Yearbook was where all the cool kids hung out!
When I was in high school there were 3000 in my school (10-12), so yearbook was actually a lot of work! My last two class periods of the day were dedicated to it (I was an editor).

I was in band from 4th-12th grades. In elementary, 4th-6th, we just had concert band. In high school, 7th-12th, I was in the marching band and concert band (all the same kids, just the majorettes/flags/football players/cheerleaders were back in the band instead of doing other things during the football games).
We went to Disney World every 3 years for marching band.
I played the clarinet. I was first chair as a senior and second chair as a junior (the ranking system gave more points to seniors). Of course, the one day that the first chair wasn't there, the band director had me play the solo for one of the songs, which I got to keep. I think he waited until the first chair was out that day to give it to me.
I didn't play in college because I didn't want the time committment, though I probably should have kept it up.

I loved the drumline. I played tenor sax my first year in HS, marching trombone the 2nd. 3rd year, I didn't do it due to being at a science camp (yeah, I'm part of the nerd parade). I personally never cared for marching band, but if I was a parent, I'd love watching it. I love watching marching bands at FB games, but I wouldn't want to to do it again. Maybe it was because we were state champions both of the years I was in it, but it was a lot of work and time commitment.

marching band in HS was great. In my junior year, we really took off. We stopped coming in dead last and started going to more and more prestigious competitions. We went to a huge one at Giants Stadium and came in 2nd out of 80 something bands (damn you, Mt. Olive!!!). Our school had NEVER had a band that won as many awards as we won that year. The music was fantastic, our show was fantastic, and everyone worked really hard to make it all come together. It was a large time commitment - In a typical band season week we had 2 3-hour practices per week, a football game on Friday night, and a full day of competition on Saturday.

At my HS, Marching band was a religion, our football team sucked though....
Actually, concert/symponic bands were religions too

Mine, too - but more like one of those sad little run-down churches who rally unworthy support from a core group of weirdos, and then have some fringe people who cycle in and out for their own purposes, and when the whole thing crumbles - no one really notices nor cares.

I was in marching band: clarinet for two years and colorguard (flags) for the remaining two years. I've never heard the term 'tall flag' before....I assume this is the equivalent of colorguard/flag corp?

I was a band nerd too. Flute/piccolo.
DS is carrying on the family tradition. Although he's decided to not march so he can take other music classes that give him more challenging music.

First chair trumpet all through high school...but I also played sports (volleyball, softball, and basketball) and was on yearbook...and National Honor society. It was a really small school, so we had to multitask.

Trumpet since 4th grade. Dad never gave the option of playing anything else, especially after he bought me a nice shiny new Bach trumpet. Pissed me off to no end as I had wanted to play the French horn for at least my Senior year. And yes I went to band camp and no I did not do that with a flute. or my mouthpiece. TYVM.
