Depends on the person and what they want out of a pet.
Cats are lower maintanance, but dogs are better companions.
I'm partial to dogs, but I like both. Cats generally want attention on their own terms and won't protect you or greet you when you come home. There's nothing like the feeling of a dog greeting you and jumping for joy when you come home, every day. To a Dog, you're their entire world, the moon and stars. It's nice to get that kind of worship, even if it is a drooling animal.

My cat Elmo greeted everyone who came to the door. Needless to say my sister said he acted more like a dog. So I had a cat with an identity crisis, freaking great.

I'm greeted by all the cats when I return after being out for a bit. I'm also accompanied to the door on my way out.

Yup, same here. You have to practically have someone else run interference to get out the door without being accompanied and then when they hear the garage door open, they are there. If you don't get to the door fast enough, the yowling begins! Then you have to drop kick them to get IN the house. We have things by the window that they lay on and look out so they see you coming even! I feel like I have clingy 2 year olds!

My vote is for the dogs - of course, we have 4 of them. I do like cats but have never had one as a pet.

My cats are much more company than my dog. I can actually play with them and they come when I call. I have a much better chance of the cats listening to me than the dog. To get Jenna to come over, I have to call her excitedly for at least two minutes and make wild gestures to get her attention, otherwise she completely ignores me. The cats don't eat poop. My cats are excited to see me when I get home. The dog takes her cues from the cats. My cats think that all times are cuddle-times. The dog comes over sometimes to be petted, she mostly thinks being in the same room or an adjoining one is good enough.
I am aware I have very unusual cats and a loveable but very dim dog.

Upon returning home and greeting me at the door, one of my cats likes to be picked up and she'll hug me! I like dogs too though, I just don't have the time to commit anymore that a dog requires.

To be honest, I'm not crazy about either species as a general rule. I don't want any more pets. DH commented this weekend that he never expected me to adore our cat the way I do. He figured I would just learn to tolerate her.
She's a Special Snowflake. She's my Doxie.

Oh, and she definitely greets us at the door. She also comes when we call her. She's a superfreak but there's no way a dog would be better company

I grew up with dogs but now I have cats. Here's why I prefer cats: 1) Easier care. Food, water, litter, toys, and something to scratch. 2) Self cleaning 3) Don't have to be let out. I know some of you say with dogs you just have to open the door, but that's provided you have a fenced in yard or a dog that won't bolt. I had neither growing up. 4) Don't have to be walked at 5 AM in the dead of winter. 5) Cheaper 6) Can be left alone at home for a few days 7) Kill small vermin and insects. Dogs do this too but cats are better at it. Especially with the insects. 8) Dogs are pack animals with an established pack hierarchy. They see you as the alpha and therefore their affection towards you is strongly influenced by the aspects of dominance and submission (i.e they're suck ups ). Cats are typically solitary in the wild with no pack mentality and thus, could give a rat's ass what you think, so their affection, should they choose to give it, is more pure in that regard. A dog will like you because you're the boss. A cat will like you based on how you treat it.

I'd rather have a cat. We found out that we have mice and I seriously thought about getting a kitty.

Cats rule. Dogs Drool.
Most dogs are quite dim - they do 'tricks' and get all excited for a treat of doggy kibble which they SAW me remove from their food bowl!
I find a dogs exhausting - they are always trying to 'figure out' what I want, what I'm doing, how can they get a reaction... on and on. A cat generally doesn't really care how you feel or what you want - and when they want something they come out and say it directly and clearly.

Would it be fair to say that extroverts prefer dogs and introverts prefer cats? Because that's the impression I'm getting from this thread. I can understand why, though. Cats are basically the introverts of the animal world, and dogs the extroverts.

I've had cats and now have dogs. At the time in my life when I was working full time, cats were perfect (at one point I had three). They were independent and could be left all day. But now, that I have the time I do enjoy the dogs. They are better companions than cats, they don't jump up on the kitchen counter, and they don't use a litterbox. They DO have to be walked, exercised, fed regularly (I can't just leave a bowl of kibble out) and they need attention. So they take more time and energy.
So I think which is "better" depends on your lifestyle.

Yes, because you like cats It's really hard to tell. You have a gregarious online persona but in my mind, the hallmark of an introvert/extrovert is whether they're energized by being around others or need alone time to recharge. I know some very talkative introverts and not-so-talkative extroverts. I'd gamble introvert... but I wouldn't put much money on it, because I haven't spent any time with you in person (dammit!)

DH is an introvert and definitely prefers dogs.
I grew up with cats and dogs and love both. DH also really likes cats, but he's allergic. Still, neither of us could imagine our life without our dogs. And I do mean dogS. Since we became a 2 dog household in 2003, we've spent maybe 8 weeks total as a single dog household after dogs passed. We really like having at least 2 dogs, and currently, we have 3.
Now, I still like cats, and on some days I'd say cats were better, in the same way that nieces and nephews are "better"- ie I don't have to care for them. I get to show up, cuddle the kitty and then leave. With my dogs, well, they're mine, so I actually have to care for them- feed, walk, out, etc. But they are worth it. And besides, it's not like I don't need the exercise.

Cats are basically the introverts of the animal world, and dogs the extroverts. That would make me an introvert, so what say you now? I prefer cats because they're cuter, independent, and I can go away for a weekend and not worry. And whoever said cats aren't cuddly and don't greet you at the door is a big, fat liar.

Cats get bad press. I think there are fewer asshole dogs, that's the problem.

Henry is a jerk (he has run up on the arm of the couch and bitch slapped me before), but he loves to cuddle as soon as I get into bed. Oh my god. I'm in an abusive relationship.

Meghan! Kitty doesn't abuse us but she loves her snuggle time. Pretty much her favorite thing in the world is hunkering down in bed with us.

My cats go outside through the cat door and bury their poo. My dog shat all over the grass and left it there - or even better - would eat it and then come inside and throw up on my carpet. So, my vote is for cats.
However, my cats are now very, very old. This morning one of them peed on the bathmat. So, I will be anti-cat until these old ones die. I'm done with them and their problems. I'm a fair-weather cat mother.
