So its been a while since I purchased a new car (since I am usually a loyal YM rule follower, I kept my last car like 11 yrs)
last time in the manual it said something like don't drive faster than 50 MPH for the first 500 miles or something in order to properly break in the engine...
this owner manual doesn't mention it at all and the internet has me confused.....are new cars already broken in or something or some other new technology in the last 10 yrs? (I'm not that much of a car guy)
thx
Rob

My Scion's owners manual said something to the effect "drive a variety of speeds for the first 1000 miles" and then probably something about "serious injury or death may occur" if you don't. OK, the owners manual had ALOT of warnings about serious injury or death occurring, but not on the section about the first 1000 miles. I do 90% stop and go city driving so I did make an effort to take the car on the express and do 55 or faster for atleast some of those first 1K miles. Basically the manual was telling me NOT to go on a long road trip until after I'd put 1000 miles on the car. I don't think there's much of a 'break in' period for new cars.

I thought the break in period was a thing of the past. And I really think in the past it was not all that important.

I read something once that said to drive a lot of stop and go speeds and change the oil within the first month. Said that after that, you should be fine. I don't know. I guess I never really tried to break a car in. I've only had 2 new cars in my life. Everything else has been at least a year or two old.

My 07 civic said don't change the oil early for the first oil change (which came around 8,000 miles), don't brake hard the first 200 miles, and don't floor-it or accelerate really fast the first 600 miles.

My 2012 370z says the break in period is 1200 miles and to drive at varying speeds. It also says to keep the RPM's under 4000 or 4500 RPM.
