I've been trying to meal plan. This week, sirloin steak was on sale. I took it out of the freezer on Monday. Monday was 99 degrees and 110% humidity, so I didn't want it, it went back in the fridge and I had cereal. The kids had chicken nuggets
Tuesday, I cooked the steak but it really wasn't what I wanted.
What do you guys to when what you planned for dinner just isn't sounding appetizing at dinner time?

Call it a day that ends in "y" and eat it anyway.
I find it goes in stages. There will be weeks where I'm all "Crap - do I have to eat that???!!!"
And, then one week I'll plan a whole bunch of things that are new, and I have to work hard, and read a recipe, and then the next week I'm super happy to make the standards.

I try to think of something different to do with it.
So rather than a grilled sirloin, I would grill the steak and make sandwiches, quesidellas, put it over a salad, do a stir fry....

I've having the same problem, swamp. Tonight is supposed to be mac and cheese with cut up ham steaks and broccoli on the side. The dishes haven't been done and the stove is cluttered. And it's HOT!

I'm making soup. Because when it is over 100 degrees out, who doesn't want a nice hot steaming bowl of soup?

Make some tuna salad or egg salad. Cut up melon, peaches, berries, carrots, celery, green/red/yellow peppers...whatever. Some cottage cheese and bread/pita/wheat thins/triscuits/organic styrofoam flat things....there you have it...."dairy night".

I usually make a run to the grocery store to get waht I really want for dinner. I gave up trying to meal plan for that very reason. I suck at it... If I'm bored with what I'm eating, I might as well not eat. Do you have a grill pan? I have one and love it! It's not exactly the same as an actual grill, but the boys love it when I use it to cook hamburgers and I've also done steak and chicken in it. what's a grill pan? since i don't know what it is, im sure i dont' have one. i do have grill on my deck right outside the door, though. I use it year round. grilling in a blizzard is interesting.

We also really like steak salad. We cook the steak in any manner we can manage (grill, broil, pan sear - whatever) and then cool it down and slice it. Make a salad with mixed greens or arugula, plus lots of other veges. I have a balsamic vinegrette recipe that is really good with it. But, my son has discovered that blue cheese dressing is also pretty awesome. We usually get a loaf of frech bread. It is a good meal because it is cold, and by the time we eat, I'm over the fact that I had to cook in the heat.

You have a 30 mile commute - don't tell me you don't pass a single grocery store in all that way?!

Steak and cheese hoagies!
Stir fry the sirloin, peppers and onions. Put in a crusty roll and cover with a slice of provolone cheese. Stick under broiler to melt the cheese.
YUM!!

I put a list of 5 possible meals on the white board. We can make whatever looks good from that list, and then we erase it after dinner. Usually by the time there's 1-2 items on there, DH suggests getting fast food or making sandwiches. Fine with me, but he's responsible for getting the food/making sandwiches/heating up pizza, whatever. Half the time he decides something on the list looks ok for me to cook

I think this happens to everyone. I try to come up with a week's worth of meals and then decide on individual days which of the meals off the list I want to make. This doesn't always work...sometimes I just outright abandon my plan and get what I want but I found it's easier to know on Tuesday morning what I want to eat Tuesday night rather than knowing on the previous Friday what I want to eat the following Tuesday night. Of course, it helps that I work from home so changing my mind isn't too big of a deal.

I use it year round. grilling in a blizzard is interesting. this is what I have. you "grill" on your stove top. if I'm paying attention, I can actually get better lines on what I'm grilling with this pan than I do on my outdoor grill. thyme - I had a noodle soup bowl for lunch. my nana used to tell us that if you are suffering through hot weather, that you should drink hot beverages. the logic being if you raised your own temp closer to the outside temp, you'd feel more comfy. as long as I'm properly hydrated, it seems to work for me.

Back in the olden days when I was still cube farming, I made up a menu that went from one payday to the next and did my grocery shopping accordingly. If something was on sale that looked good, I'd revise the menu. If it happened that I got up in the morning and whatever was on the menu wasn't appealing to me, I just switched with another day.
I also wrote out the menu and posted it on the fridge so that the kids wouldn't drive me nuts with "what's for dinner?"
If you had lots of time, you could make steak soup. If you hadn't already cooked the steak. And if you had some ham, you could have ham and eggs if you had some eggs.
Or...you could fund the place that I want to open. It's gonna have a drive-up window, and all you have to do is call ahead to order the special we plan to serve for dinner that day, let us know how many people (two adults, two kids), and pick it up on your way home. You'll get an entree, the sides, salad, dessert. And there'll be a website that you can check to see what the special will be each day.
Clever, eh wot? Maybe I'll call it Super Supper. Or in the winter when there'll often be soup, I can call it Souper Supper.
Nancy might be convinced to include it as part of The Filling Station, but I dunno. I'm a meat-and-potatoes kinda cook and Nancy seems to be a tad trendier. I guess we could do both.

You folks have given me a good idea for dinner. I've got half of a green pepper, half of a red pepper, half a Vidalia onion. Chop and saute. Add these to pasta sauce with some leftover stew meat and elbow macaroni that I had from the weekend's chili dinner. Make another small batch of macaroni to throw in. Add grated fresh Parmesan cheese. I have no idea what to call it, other than dinner.
