Maybe they get so much self-esteem because we put an unreasonable amount of value on sports vs. arts. If being good at something caused success at other things than kids who play an insturment or are excellent at art would also have a disproportionately high rate of college attendance. But, because our society couldn't give a shit if someone can dance ballet, and we broadcast high school basketball on the radio, the dancer will fall into the "other" category.

And, what I said is that you detailed out what they did - which you did a page or 2 ago. And looking at the list of accomplishments of those 7 girls, I can only conclude that they are all doing well and are perfect people. And, given what I know from other athletes, they are all perfect people and better than the GP. You are REALLY not going to let this go, are you?! How in the hell do you make the leap that because some of them stayed in gymnastics and some of them left for another field that they are all "perfect people"? What does that even mean? And more importantly, why are you ascribing these opinions to ME when I never said anything like that?!? I said awhile back that I didn't think they were a great sampling anyway - tons of elite athletes never see the Olympics, the M7 were just handy examples.

Ah - so they are better people before they become athletes.

I'm bored out of my skull, and I can't taunt people on the threads about eating healthy. I tried, but swamp didn't play along.

Well, my son is going to go on to being a professional soccer player - so he is better than your kids. My daughter sucks. She will clearly be a huge failure.

Do the #'s support that kids in sports do better than kids in music? I'm sure its because I wasn't into sports, but just about everyone in upper level band went to college. Except for me of course...

And I don't hate athletes - but I am sick of the hype. I'm not sure how I'm going to get through the olympic bullshit this year. Yippie - another 20 people running in circles and one of them was 1/10th of a second faster than the other one. Let's talk about it for hours on end!

I don't know, most studies tend to focus just on sports. I've seen a few that say basically any organized activity is as good as any other. So band, debate, etc., are just as good as sports.

And sometimes they swim a little ways, and sometimes they swim a little further. And sometimes they spin their arms this way, and sometimes they spin their arms that way - clearly that is 19 different things.

At least they're actually doing something. Why in the sam hell do we give medals to the jockeys instead of the horses in equestrian events? The jockey didn't do the dressage steps. The jockey didn't jump any fences.

And they carry less risk that you'll get osteoarthritis in your 20s and a total knee replacement at age 50 (as DH's doctor has told him he'll need). Funny thing is, DH doesn't even like football.

This is why the only sport I really like to watch is gymnastics. And sometimes diving. There's actual innovation there. I have never been able to figure out what's so awesomely fascinating about watching people swim or run or leap. It always looks the same.

I don't think dressage riders are called jockeys.

The jockey kicked the horse and made it do those things. Where have YOU been?

Whatever they're called they need to stop stealing the limelight from the horse. The horse earned the medal, you just sat on him while he/she did it.
Imagine if we strapped a little person to the back of all the sprinters in the 100 meter, and gave the medal to the little person riding the fastest guy. The actual sprinters would be totally and completely right to be pissed off, in my opinion.
