disappearing act. Congressman Jackson has been missing in action for weeks now, and it has been officially announced he is being treated for mental health issues. It is not known if this was precipitated because his girlfriend was outed, or the ongoing Congressional investigation on buying Obama's Senate seat. www.blackamericaweb.com/news/top-news/jesse-jackson-jr-takes-medical-leave-absenceHis Congressional office never announced his original disappearance until Chicago television stations continued to ask, "where is he?" His wife and his famous father had little to say at the time. No one would say where he was. Interestingly enough, his disappearance coincided with his Congressional investigationon rumors he was involved in "buying Obama's Senate seat from the Governor.

From the CNN Link
Jackson's illness comes as the House Ethics Committee is examining allegations that in 2008 he or one of his associates offered to raise funds for then-Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich in exchange for the Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama going to Jackson.
Pelosi: Jackson should take all the time he needs
Jackson has maintained his innocence and pledged to continue to cooperate with authorities. "I did nothing illegal, unethical or inappropriate in that pursuit, and I believe that is what the Ethics Committee will conclude at the end of this process," he said.
In a separate incident, Jackson apologized to his constituents in September 2010, after the Chicago Sun-Times reported that a Chicago businessman told federal investigators that Jackson had asked him to pay for a restaurant hostess to fly between Washington and Chicago several times.
He said he was "deeply sorry" that he had "disappointed some supporters."
A life shaped by history
Earlier Wednesday, before Jackson's office released the statement about his health, Democrats in the House of Representatives aired differing views on whether the younger Jackson should reveal the details behind his leave of absence.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California, said Jackson should disclose information on his own timetable, but Steny Hoyer of Maryland, the House minority whip, said more information should be provided.
"He's obviously facing a health problem," Hoyer said Wednesday in response to a question from CNN. "People get sick. And when people get sick, they miss work. Everybody in America understands that, but I think the family would be well-advised to give his constituents as much information as is appropriate."

It is hard to tell what is going on in this case. He disappeared from public sight, and as we all know he never disliked a camera or microphone before this situation occured. The fact there was no statement from him or his staff for a couple of weeks is indeed strange. You have to remember, this is an election year for him. Not exactly a stellar campaign on his part, right now.

The news the other morning said he was in the hospital being treated for "various mental and physical ailments" which I interpreted as he is in a mental health facility.
Sounds like the guy has mental health issues. Poor guy. He doesn't need you vultures picking at his carcass.

Agreed, swamp. From what I've read, he's ill. It's a bit silly, IMO, to speculate on what might be the problem when we have absolutely no knowledge of any of it. Anybody can get sick, either physically, or psychologically, or both. To indulge one's prurient urges at the expense of someone one doesn't know seems pretty petty to me. If the man is ill, he needs treatment not denigration, just as any of us would.

What is the timing between this and a rant I heard he went about regarding how I-Pads were destroying jobs in the US? Just curious.
Regardless, I wish him and his family the best. Whether it's something like depression, stress, or something even more significant that may require longer lasting treatment and medication, may he be sped along his way to recovery.
I don't always agree with Swamp but I do concur that, regardless of political party, we should do our best to not wish ill on someone. I remember how some (not all) on the left chortled when Rush Limbaugh had a drug issue or George Clooney made a moron of himself by joking cruelly about Heston's Alzheimers.
Borrowing a line that some religions use, "hate the politics, love the politician." That is HARD at times, I know that the President tests me with that, but it's good to try to remember and live by that if possible.

It is hard to tell what is going on in this case. ... Seems very simple to me. The man had a mental collapse of some nature which he is receiving treatment to help him. How each of us respond to this situation says something about who we are as a human being.

I chortled because it exposed his hypocrasy, not that he had a drug addiction. I work with drug addicts and I understand how easily addiction can happen and how hard it is to shake the money off your back. However, when you make a living ranting about how drug addicts should be locked up, you probably shouldn't be one yourself. I lost a lot of respect for Clooney after that. Is that any stranger than some of rants on here...........

How each of us respond to this situation says something about who we are as a human being. Based on this response and several others I guess I have to apologize. NOT! He is an elected official who disappeared for weeks without any comment on his whereabouts from him, his staff, or wife. His Democratic cohorts in Congress were even asking what was going on, and needed an explanation for the disappearance. Even his Congressional neighbor, Dick Durbin, an apologist for just about any Democrat, was asking questions. Granted with an issuance of medical incapacitation (too strong of an adjective?) we have the answer. Maybe media and Illini residents will back off. It is still an election year. Are his constituents expected to re-elect him, not knowing whether he will even serve? How is his opponent suppose to hold a debate on issues concerning their district? Are we even getting the truth? Is there a possibility, that this is also involved with his Congressional investigation on Senate seat buying? Just too many unanswered questions to let this slide without comment.

If you do not get the Chicago area political news, and excuses for bad behavior, I can understand your not understanding the situation in Chi-town, but this is still a valid election issue on whether he gets re-elected, and how it affects his political opponenet. How does his opponent respond to this issue? Give him a total pass, and allow Jackson to win by default by ignoring all issues?

If I were advising his opponent, I would recommend a very careful response that shows a great deal of respect for the ordeal of battling a mental issue. I don't see any advantage to be gained by attacking him on the issue. Those who would not vote for him based on the issue won't, those who don't feel it is a valid issue will decide on other issues, and you risk alienating rather gaining those on the fence.

However, there are other congressman that feel that whatever his medical/mental issues are should not be for public consumption. He took a medical leave of absence and that should be the end of it. He is supposed to be back after Labor Day.

Well, I don't care to know what his issues are, but the fact of the matter is that politics isn't a job that someone with fragile mental health can do, and the public has a right to know whether or not their representative is up to the task.

Jesse Jackson Jr. in Mayo ClinicROCHESTER, Minn. July 28, 2012 (AP)Illinois Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., whose whereabouts haven't been disclosed since he quietly took a medical leave from Congress several weeks ago, is being treated for depression at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, according to a statement released by the hospital late Friday. Jackson is undergoing an extensive inpatient evaluation for depression and for gastrointestinal issues, the hospital said, providing the first details about his medical condition. But the statement didn't disclose where the longtime Chicago congressman, the son of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, had previously been staying. ... The timing of his medical leave has raised questions, in part because Jackson is facing an ethics investigation in the U.S. House connected to imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The House Ethics Committee is investigating allegations that Jackson was involved in discussions about raising money for Blagojevich's campaign in exchange for the then-governor appointing him to President Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat. Blagojevich is serving a 14-year prison sentence for corruption. Jackson was not charged and has repeatedly denied wrongdoing. ... abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/jesse-jackson-jr-mayo-clinic-depression-16875290

I'm just " happy " he can afford months of inpatient care and draw his paycheck without notice to his " employers".
