Who's been a positive influence in your life? How did they influence you?
For me, it's been several people. My mother raised two children on her own, working two jobs, with no help (financial or otherwise) from anybody. Being her child could be tough at times, because she wasn't around much, and also because she isn't very demonstrative. But now that I am an adult myself I can see that both my brother and I have turned up all right. We are decent, honest people. We both have gone to school and worked for all our adult lives. So I can tell she did a good job with the very few resources available to her.
The public figure who's influenced me the most is Paul McCartney. Growing up without a father, I used to sit around the TV every Saturday, when they would have a section in the afternoon with news and music about him. You could tell right away he loved his wife and children. I started taking English classes at 8 basically to understand him without having to read captions. Having a good command of English has been an invaluable skill for me. But not only that, as I learned more about him ,I realized he's a self-made, hard-working man who got what he has based solely on his own talents. He's been my inspiration to reach for as far as I can go, without ever trying to hurt anybody.
Another great influence is a teacher I had back at the community college. She told me the first semester that she could see I wanted to succeed, and that I was focused and determined. Her friendship and constant belief in me made me work harder, just because I never wanted to let her down.
What about you? Who influenced you and how?

My grandma. She just loved all of us to death. She didn't overlook our bad behavior when we were bad but she didn't dwell on it either. She was just someone you didn't want to disappoint so you tried your very best not to. I'm still not quite sure how she managed that but we all loved her to death back.

My boss is pretty awesome. He has given me so much career and financial advice... he is sort of a mentor, I guess. No way would I be where I am today without him.

Besides Paul McCartney, one particular boss at the IRS has had a lot of influence over me and does to this day. For some reason, I can talk to him about things I can't even talk to my dad about. It's always been that way. I could always go to him for work advice, but he became a friend before he was my boss. We retired on the same day and we still talk on the phone a couple of times a month.

My boss at my first "real" job, the County District Attorney. He overcame a really crappy homelife (mom died when he was a kid, dad was a drunk, got his girlfriend pregnant just out of HS) to become one of the county's most politically powerful, people. He's not the most brilliant legal mind, but he's got great sense for law, excellent people skills, common sense, and an amazing work ethic. I've learned so much from him.

LOL, Regis. How are your investments going? Great! We're really close to crossing our next milestone number but haven't quite hit the 11 or 12% over the past year.

Well, parents are always an obvious choice. However, I did have a teacher in both 6th and 8th grade (same guy) who helped me turn things around. I was a troublemaker in middle school, and didn't really care about school work or getting good grades. Through discipline and other tactics, he helped me turn things around and start to care about school. I went on to do well in high school and graduate from college.

Your boss gives you financial advice? Why do you come here then . Truth be told I don't think I've ever had a good mentor at my job. I've had to learn most things myself.

My Dad. RIP. he still leaves a hole in the world where he used to be and is still missed by all that knew him. What better memorial than that?

I only had one boss in my 25 year government career that I can say that about and none in the ensuing years.

Ha ha, gotta spread the wealth! No though, when I started here he sat me down and explained all the retirement options (which neither HR nor the state website did very clearly) and why it was important I contribute. Then again, I talked him into refinancing a few months ago, and into buying vs. leasing a new car, so at least it's somewhat reciprocated He is a special snowflake, though. I fear the day he retires because I don't think I'll ever find another boss like him. I figure everyone has one awesome boss in their career, so you'll get one eventually, Phoenix.

my boss. She genuinely cares about me (and the rest of her staff) and she wants to help me grow professionally in any way I can. When I told her about my decision to not return to grad school, she was behind me 100%. I really hope things pan out for me in my department because she is really the best boss I have ever had.
