I had to change my wardrobe when I moved up north. I still lack sweaters. But I needed winter clothing.

I want to completely overhaul my wardrobe but that's not happening. Otherwise I've been replacing things as needed. Maybe 10-12 pieces a year including underthings. Now my MIL is the person sending the number to 64 pieces a year. She goes to the outlet stores 2 hours away at least once a month. At one point when I lived with her I counted all the clothes she bought in one month. About 30 items. When I helped her go through some of her clothes for her garage sale we came across several items that still had tags on them and she got rid of anything that was more than 2 years old.

As needed, sometimes after needed. I shop thrift stores if I need a large amount of a type of clothing (Or when the opportunity arises!)- had no long sleeved shirts, bought a bunch. wrecked a couple camisoles, bought a bunch. I feel like I buy a LOT at thrift stores, but total, not 64 pieces a year. Not even counting each individual sock and underwear.

Yeah, i'm easily one of those people that buys 62 items a year...what can I say? I love clothes and love to have variety...always have. I usually do a couple big trips a year, usually stocking up at the end of the season for the following year. It has always worked out great for me, except this year. I lost 15 pounds and had to buy pretty much a whole new wardrobe for spring/summer, and I'll have to buy quite a bit for winter, too, since it was like February/March when I lost it, I just made do with the few winter items I had that sort of fit. Other than my usual end of the year big hauls, normally I will just buy a couple new things at the start of the season.

I saw a little big of a Dr Phil re-run this morning. He was talking to people with money problems. One of them was a woman with no job who had maxed out all her credit cards and had $38,000 in CC debt. When she was working, she spent her pay checks on shopping and didn't have any money left for bills. (She lived with her mom so her living expenses were covered).
She didn't like to wear the same outfit twice. Her explaination - she HAD to have nice things.
I think maybe this one person makes up for about 10 other people who buy very little during the year.

When I changed jobs 2 years ago I bought a new "work" wardrobe. Went from working in an office to an indoor/outoor industrial setting. I have 5 pairs of jeans/pants, ~8 short sleeve shirts for summer, ~8 long sleeve for winter. There is no "fashion" involved. Because of the environemnt that I work in, I sometimes get chemicals or other stains that cause me to replace clothing. I would expect to buy 1 pair of pants and 2-3 shirts per year.
DH works in the printing business. He wears jeans and collared shirts. He can also be rough on his clothing, so we replace 1-2 pairs of jeand and 3-4 shirts per year.
I can't imagine ever getting to 64 garments per year even between the 2 of us!

I read an article in Businessweek that your average person buys 62 pieces for their wardrobe every year. That seems like a lot. My weight swings up and down so I'm always updating. DH does a big trip when needed. I was going to guess that is artificially inflated with things like underwear and socks but the trendy clothes buyer is probably the biggest reason that is a high number. I don't buy anywhere near that amount regularly even including bras, underwear, socks, and shoes. I do remember when working at a big department store the trendy buyer is a favorite target of retailers. They shop no less than monthly, typically every week looking for the newest stuff to hit the floor. They obviously spend more than the average consumer which is why retailers love them.

64 sounds like a lot, but I can see it - especially for women. I don't go quite that far. I'd estimate that I (on average) buy 20 new clothing items per year. This year it will be a bit more. Apparently exercising and not eating like complete crap has caused me to go down at least one size, so pretty much my entire work wardrobe (and some of my "play" wardrobe) needs to be replaced. The good thing is that I work for a clothing corporation, so I can use my discount to get some pretty decent clothing. Unfortunately the house is sucking up all my damn money!!!!

Maybe I hit in the 60 piece range one of my early years working after college. When I had a decent salary and often had 7 regular bras, two to three sports bras, lots of underwear, and replaced at least 4 pairs of shoes a year. Now, I've been under buying and under replacing for years. I really need to replace two pairs of socks I bought last year which have both developed holes as I don't have 7 pairs of socks I rotate through for the season. I like fashion, but I buy things more to last like most of my stuff. The only thing I'm really OK doing frequent shopping for is food.

Optimist, I typically buy classic pieces for my work wardrobe - plain black/plain brown/plain tan/plain gray/pinstriped slacks and buttoned-down dress shirts in varying colors. I'll change it up with some v-neck and turtleneck sweaters in the winter, but that's basically my work wardrobe. I see trendy cute things all the time that I would like to add, but I can't justify spending $30-60 for something that I'll wear for just one season. I try to work in new jewelry to help spice things up, but yeah - I'm in a work wardrobe rut.

I went through a stage of buying something just about every payday when I was in my first job out of college. I'm well over that now. What has stuck in my mind was in interview with the late Kitty Carlisle Hart on TV in the early 1960s. She'd made the Best-Dressed List and they asked how she did it. She said that she stayed the same size and bought well-made, classic pieces that never went out of style. I've pretty much followed that- I have cashmere sweaters 20+ years old, blazers bought 10 years ago, filled in with inexpensive pieces that are more recent (frequently from the sale racks at Chico's). Haven't bought a T-shirt in years- they're all promos of one sort or another and I use them for working out and yardwork.
I definitely do not buy 64 items a year- that would be 5+ per month and I don't think I've ever bought that many items in one month. Nothing is made in China. And well-made clothes in good fabrics are a pleasure to wear and always look nice. They wouldn't pass muster in the offices of Vogue but hey, I work for an insurance company.

I really need some new clothes. I wear jeans with a solid knit shirt every day (short sleeved or long sleeved depending on weather). I have basically 4 pairs of shoes. I'm a SAHM so I don't have any external fashion expectations, but still...it's ridiculously boring. Unfortunately, I've gained 10 pounds this year and I refuse to buy a larger size so I'm not getting anything until I lose the weight. DH gets a few new items a couple times a year. The problem is he never gets rid of the old stuff. So, his "fancy" blazer is from his HS graduation 20 years ago.

I tend to buy a lot a few years if I happen to like the style that is popular -- I bought a lot of those kimono style shirts when they were in. But now I don't like the styles so much so I only buy a few things, and mostly casual clothes. I like my work clothes to last 5-7 years. I would guess I buy about 10 clothing items a year, minus socks and underwear.

I don't think i buy 60 articles of clothing a year, but i do love adding to my repertoire, so I may come close! Sometimes, you just need a new shirt/skirt/pants/dress. If nothing fits or looks right, then dsw is there for you! I'm down 22-lb so far, so I am sporadically replacing things. Plus, Im fitting into stuff i haven't worn in years, so I need a weekend to figure out what can stay and what can go. I did buy a pair of jeans from old navy when i needed new nice jeans NOW when my old fancy lady denim had gotten too big. Holy shit, the fabric is so thin and theuu feel stretched out after one wearing. I need to go jeans shopping bad. I wear a lot tanks and camisoles and those tend to get replaced often because of a certain cat getting freaked out by a noise and he hauls ass across me. I was holding him one day when manfriend's buddy knocked on the door and Henry ran across my chest. They leave and i went to take a shower and i realized i was Damn close to a major nip slip!

When I worked I bought tons of clothes and shoes. It was mostly business attire and I didn't have a lot of casual clothes. Just jeans and stuff like that. Now it depends on the styles. If things are really cute I will buy in different colors like guys do. LOL! The rest is on a "when needed" basis only. I don't really care to shop but do like cute clothes. Thanks to Jen for bringing to my attention that Macy's has a sale on suits. I need to get one or two since mine are getting old. I buy classic cut clothes so they rarely go out of style but I worry about the seams busting out from being dry cleaned. Plus I'm sick of the suits I have. Lately I've only needed them for funerals which there have been too many of.

Some years they're pushing colors that just aren't flattering to an ageing Caucasian face. I remember a particularly bad season of neon colors. I like yellow and peach and some years I just can't find them.

I go clothes shoppping maybe 2-4 times a year. I'll usually go in the spring to get short sleeved shirts and other summer clothes and once in the fall to get long sleeved shirts and other winter clothes.
I wear jeans all year round, and just replace as needed. I typically only go shoe shopping once a year.
At each of my trips, I'll usually not buy more than 6 items. I have no idea how one can buy 62 pieces of clothing a year.

I have gotten pretty picky about replacing clothing. IMHO seems the quality has been deteriorating substantially over the past 5 years. Women's shirts seem to be paper thin now to where you need multiple layers to not feel "exposed". I update my workout clothes more often since they get musty if I don't replace them. I tend to wear the same clothes until they get holes in them, but try to keep a look out for shirts I like. I think I get about 10 shirts/year and 3 pairs of jeans.

I have noticed this too or maybe I just shop at cheap places I used to buy dress pants at NY & Co. but 2 pairs of dress pants I bought there had the hem come unraveled after just a few a weeks.

We are business casual and jeans on Fridays. I typically just buy black and grey dress pants that pretty much go with anything.

I confess. I make up for all you who don't buy over 60 items per year. Just last weekend, I bought 3 dresses, a pair of shoes and a necklace. In proper YM form, all were on sale and I had additional discount certificates. Some need is due to weight loss, but I also just like pretty clothes. Plus, I work in a professional office where khakis and polos don't meet the dress code. As I've gotten older, I've tended to give up heels and wear more flats and wedges. Must easier on the arches. On the plus side, no matter what the occasion, I have something appropriate to wear.
