My supervisor just replied to the email I sent her earlier. This was her response: "There is no proof anyone cheated. Don't worry about it." This would make me suspicious that she did it on purpose as a favor to a particular student.

I'm with swamp I want to borrow her crystal ball. You cannot leave tests that have not been given just laying around where anyone could have access to them.

I am glad you talked to the department head. This is a big deal and you did the right thing. Your supervisor has a cavalier attitude because the results of her actions don't have a direct effect on her. They do cause a major issue for the academic department in question and they are the right people to make a decision regarding a new course of action. I do hope, that with an issue this major, it won't matter if the President of the University him/herself is your supervisor's current boss, there will be disciplinary action.

Maybe they were "decoy" exams and this is a sting to test the trustworthiness of your student employees. The REAL exams cover entirely different material and it will be evident who studied and who didn't. Alternatively, your supervisor is playing a sting on you to see whether you will fink.

I have heard that an email was sent from the head of the department to all of the instructors informing them that the exams may have been compromised. She said that there wasn't enough time to re-write the exams so she gave the instructors some things to be on the look out for. Supposedly the email was also sent to all of the deans as well as the vp of instruction and a couple of other higher ups. I'm not anybody important so I didn't get the email, but I hear the tone of the email was "PISSED OFF". I'm sure my supervisor is going to get called into a meeting about this as soon as she returns from vacation. I'll never end up knowing what actually will be said, but I'm sure she'll be like "This never would've happened if I wasn't on vacation. I've got shitty staff" or something like that. Basically, she'll absolve herself because she was on vacation and nobody will ever know how careless, irresponsible, and stupid she really is. Gotta be willing to play the game...

Except because of your email to the Dean, she can't play that game. Your supervisor is well aware of the hours you work. You didn't call in sick on Monday. You don't work on Mondays. You did not promise to come in on Monday because she was on vacation. This is not a new or unexpected thing. She made the choice to leave the exams out on a table in a common work area, instead of just sending you and email saying "Hey, exams are locked in my office, would you work on them next week." Because you took the initiative and let the Dean of the department know, they know full well that "staff" isn't the problem. And that's why, for issues like this, you don't wait for your supervisor to get back. You cover YOUR ass, not hers. Trust me, she tries blaming this one on "staff" and they will see right through it.

You need to make sure she can't blame it on you. I would follow up with the department head and share your fears of being blamed, also making sure to enumerate what Shanendoah pointed out - unfortunately it is now heavy duty CYA time.
Also keep in mind that the whole thing may be brushed under the carpet becasue it is better for the institution. Good thing you have applied for another job elsewhere in the system. Hopefully you can emerge from the shit-storm unscathed.
