okay, I just got back from a pow-wow with my boss. She is as I thought she would be - 110% supportive. I showed her the two jobs I came across and she gave me her opinion (which I value). She hinted to me that in the next week or so that there would be some "changes" in our department that might be of interest to me, but I should look into these jobs in the interim.

"Do NOT count yourself out for either job. Do give your manager the courtesy of letting her know that you are ready to do more & that you plan on applying for internal positions because you LOVE the company."
One other thing I"d like to mention. If your boss is really a good boss they won't want to limit your career in any way and will encourage you to move up.

I reached out to HR about the purchasing position. The responsibilities are numerous and diverse (so less free time ) AND it's a step higher than where I'm at salary-wise. I emailed the hiring manager about the job details. This position will definitely be challenging, but I believe I'm finally ready. The analyst position is very heavily analytical (DUH! ). My boss told me exactly what it would be like, and I'm not so sure I want that. I can analyze, but I don't know if I want to do that all day every day. I'll think it over some more.

That's great news!
My initial thought when you said they were advertising for your position was that they were planning on making you an offer elsewhere. But I would have thought they would have asked you first. But maybe not?!
Your boss sounds GREAT! I can understand your wanting to keep her (although I agree that you need to stretch yourself and take advantage of other opportunities, even in another group.)
Best of luck!

Best of luck MJ!! I wouldn't be surprised if your supervisor doesn't come up with a plan to move you up in her dept as well. She sounds like a good boss.

okay.... after a quick question to the hiring manager (who seems very sweet and happy to see that I was interested) I just submitted my application for the purchasing position.

Good luck Jen! Did they let you know when they'd decide or how long the process would be?

sooooo.... I have an interview for the purchasing position on Wednesday. I feel like it might be protocol to interview all internal applicants, but whatevs. I'm still doing a happy dance while simultaneously making a "scared shitless" face on the inside.

Don't discount internal interviews. That's how I got this job. The university really prefers people hire internally so if you are an internal candidate a lot of times your application automatically gets passed on. I had pretty much zip experience for this job but I had the animal experience they were looking for so they hired me anyhow. I probably would have been booted out of the system if I had been an external candidate.

Help! Interview is tomorrow afternoon and I need to figure out what to wear. Since this interview will be at 1pm, I need to wear something nice and professional but not too business-like as I will be at work before and after the interview. The only thing I can come up with is my black and white knee-length houndstooth shift dress with red belt at the waist paired with my black heels. It looks both fun and professional. I'm not sure if it's professional enough for an interview though..... Suggestions?

Do you have a cute/stylish suite (not stuffy looking)? I would always wear a suit and I think that still applies today.
Your interview time is perfect! The interviewer will be relaxed after their lunch break and in a good mood. Good luck tomorrow!!

no, I don't really have a good suit anymore - it doesn't fit right.

Do you have nice cut jacket to pair with a skirt? They don't have to be the same color. In fact, it would be better if they aren't. Like a black and white houndstooth jacket with a black skirt... something like that.

plus, a suit is too formal for my department. I guess I could just wear the skirt that goes with it and bring the jacket, but again - the jacket doesn't really fit right (too big).

I guess I was thinking you could wear a shift/top with the skirt and remove the jacket while you are back at work.

I used to wear a suit to work but would take off the blazer for most of the day. You could take the blazer with you and only wear it during the interview. Just a thought.

yeah. I'll scrounge around in my closet (and boxes/suitcases/drawers) to see what I can find. I wish I had a cute suit jacket to put over the dress. The jacket I have wouldn't go with it at all.

I think houndstooth dress with red belt and black shoes sounds good - often times a good dress can look just as professional as a suit. How do people dress in that department? What is the weather there like? Biggest question - is it bare legs or nylons?

I don't know how people dress in that department. I think the dress looks professional but a cute black blazer on top would IMO make it look even better. I'll see if I can run to the mall (ugh) after dinner. If not, I think I'll settle for the suit jacket, baby blue button-down blouse, and black skirt - same shoes. No nylons - it's pretty warm here.

Jen, I'm late to the party...I've only ever interviewed for accounting/finance positions but a dress would not be appropriate for what I interviewed for. I always wore a tailored suit to my interviews...then again, women weren't allowed to wear flats or pants at my firm until several years after I started (i'm not that old...I started in January 1995)....

Jen, I think a blazer and skirt is probably fine, but if you're going to the mall anyway, why not look at suits while you're there? Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I would still prefer to wear a suit to a job interview. Especially since you're looking to "move up the ladder" ... so you'll want to "look the part".

How do they tell you what heel to wear? I worked at one company that required men to wear blazers and the women had to wear panty hose but the shoe thing is crazy.
