Dennis Kucinich Suing Congressional Cafeteria Companies Over Olive Pit Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) recently filed a lawsuit against the food-service companies that run a congressional cafeteria over a 2008 incident involving a stray olive pit placed in a sandwich wrap. In his complaint, captured by Gawker, Kucinich argues that the wrap, which was supposed to contain only pitted olives, was "unwholesome and unfit for human consumption." Chewing the pit, he claims, resulted in "serious and permanent dental and oral injuries requiring multiple surgical and dental procedures." Kucinich is seeking $150,000 from Restaurant Associates and three other companies that run the cafeteria in the Longworth congressional office building. Check out Gawker's coverage of the matter, which includes a video that may contradict Kucinich's account -- showing him speaking, seemingly uninhibited, on the House floor mere days after what he claims was extensive dental work. www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/26/dennis-kucinich-suing-cafeteria-olive_n_814337.htmlNOTE: According to CNN this incident took place 3 years ago.

IMHO, if an olive pit does this, you have some serious dental issues going on here.

150,000, roflmao? That is probably mostly lawyer fees. Instead of loose teeth I think this guy has some loose marbles. As a congressman this guy is over paid already. This shows that he is greedy. A perfect example why congress should not be able to vote on their own raises.

While I believe the amount Kucinich is suing for is ridiculous, I don't see why his insurance provider should pay for the repairs to the tooth. The food service vendor should pay for his dental work
And a broken tooth is painful.

Edit: Before you attempt a comeback.....really.....REALLY think about who pays for everything involved here.

I broke a tooth last year eating a bean burrito from Los Betos. It is a real pain in the butt, since I am broke and the molar is still in my mouth, just waiting for me to accidentally chew on that side and break the piece off, which will expose the root and drive me to the ER I guess. But, since I am poor and have no insurance I do not go to doctors unless I am dying or something. Maybe I should sue Los Betos for having something hard in a bean burrito? The odd thing is-- it never crossed my mind to sue, and I am poor, could really use some $$$$$. I say-- eat at your own risk, drink blazing hot coffee at your own risk, put your child on a slide in the AZ sun while hogging out at McDonalds at your own risk, or just stay home.

If someone falls and seriously hurts themself and sues you for $250,000 for negligence, will you pay for it out of your own pocket or will you try to work out something with your home owner's insurance company? And what's wrong with the food service vendor paying for the dental work repair? Remember-I didn't say the the food service vendor should utilize their insurance to pay the whole $150,000! Reread what I wrote and you quoted.

In turn, now that you've answered the previous questions....Who pays for the Congressional Cafeteria's Insurance? Now again....either way the US taxpayer is paying for this regardless the outcome.

Teeth Problems and Heart DiseaseMaybe you’ve heard that clean teeth promote heart health? And asked: what does dental health have to do with heart disease? In fact gum infections can raise your heart disease risk. Did you also know that many of deaths from a heart disease brought on by bad oral health; and sometimes by dental treatment? The recent studies found a strong link between gum disease and narrowing of the arteries (a process known as atherosclerosis), which can lead to heart attacks and stroke. Bacteria enter the body through a failure of natural defensive barriers. One such barrier is skin. Another is the tooth structure. These surfaces are not, themselves, vulnerable to germs; and they prevent germs from access to inner tissues which have no natural immunity, no defense. Does the congressional cafeteria vendor make a profit? Remember-the OP states the congressional cafeteria is run by food-service companies-not by government. Kucinich is not suing the cafeteria itself.
So the food-service companies make a profit. The cost to fix the person's tooth comes out of the food-service company's profits.
I suppose we do pay for it in a sense in that the money we spent on food in the cafeteria will go toward paying to have the guy's tooth repaired.

The question is, if a middle or lower class person was to sue do you think they would get that much?

I doubt Dennis Kucinich will get that either.
Heck I could have sued a restaurant $5,000,000,000 for finding a used band-aid in my salad one time but I don't think I would have gotten a fraction of that amount.
Sue high-settle for something in the middle range.

Don't think the ER is going to help you..possible a dental school in your area might be something to check out..even to the payment for treatment might be worked out..do it before you end up with a root canal problem.

1) Who the hell doesn't use pitted olives?? The pits serve no purpose!!
2) Buyer beware...don't automatically inhale your food if you have someone else make it - I always check over my food if I buy it from someplace that made it for me. Anything from hairs to fingernails to bones could be in there somewhere. Slow down...check your food...chew slowly and thoroughly.

He won't get squat. Every jar of olives I've seen has a disclaimer that they are "machine pitted" and that pits and pit fragments may remain in the food. If Kucinich is concerned about that, he should have asked to see the container that the olives came from. Otherwise, as jkapp pointed out, look at your food before you chomp on it and chew carefully.

Kucinich is seeking $150,000 from Restaurant Associates
Dennis "The Menace" Kucinich needs the money to add to his campaign funds since he may want to run for president again in 2012 as the darling of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party...and hire his wife again as his campaign manager and pay her megabucks..
