We always get ours free when we buy an updated Norton Antivirus.

We always get ours free when we buy an updated Norton Antivirus. But Norton Antivirus is so overpriced that even with TT included, both are overpriced. I only paid $25 at Costco, they had a coupon a few weeks ago. I've used Turbo Tax the past 5 years or so. I was planning t purchase the 2011 one this weekend. What was wrong? Cawiau, did you read the OP? Susana complained about having paid for the software before getting a free version, not about the software itself.

Ok, egg on my face here!
When I opened it, I realized they are charging for it. So I reread the cover which says, "Unlimited federal tax returns, free federal e-files (5), free state download (e-file state download)."
Now I'm annoyed that it's NOT free.

Try filing an extension. Then buy a copy on E-bay for a lot less after 15 April for your extended August filing deadline. Just make sure you are getting a refund though.

I don't think any companies do free state filing.

There used to be a deal for State Farm customers where you could get a free federal e-file if you went to TurboTax via the State Farm website. I think it's now just a small discount.

I got burnt by the "free" software that comes with it a few years ago. Only once you get to the fine print INSIDE THE BOX do you see it was only if you owned a previous copy of the software.

I don't understand why so many people use tax software. I used it one year, found the questions confusing, one wrong answer and my return is incorrect. Since then i just use the e-file provided by the IRS and the e-file for the state. It to me seems easier than trying to answer questions - Just fill in the amounts on the line. If your taxes are similar to previous years its almost too easy.
I think the majority of people are scared into believing that tax preparation is this highly complicated process and they need a professional or software. Or if they make a mistake they will be hauled off to prison.

DH is a CPA and he uses H&R Block. He doesn't do personal tax for his regular job, he's in the corporate tax group. He does our taxes as well as some family and clients. He uses it because it is easy to look up the previous year's files or further back if someone has a question or if he needs to look something up.

I just use tax act for the free federal and e-file with the state.

Why do we expect companies to give us software without paying for it?
Are you annoyed that your groceries aren't free? Should your haircut be free?
Why should software be free?
I prefer to pay for it - then I know it won't be full of misleading ads - like MINT!

I deleted my original post so you may not know that I was annoyed when I thought I received something for free that I had already bought. Then I discovered that I hadn't read the fine print. I was already annoyed so I had to find something new to be annoyed about.
