First of all, not that I don't believe you, but do you have a link, marjar? Second-- why can't schools just do what Tucson does and offer open enrollment from out of the district kids? Third-- maybe there was some reason she could not move in with her Dad-- like he lives in public housing, or is on SSDI, which has really extreme rules about income and residency. Sounds like a woman trying so hard to work her way out of the ghetto to me. I am sorry for her, and for her kids. Wonder who has them now. This whole story sucks. Not everyone has the chance to just "sacrifice more", or move, or any of that. Judge not............. I drove a cab 15-18 hours a day to keep my kids in a good neighborhood school, in a neighborhood I cannot afford to live in, and several of you libs that know me from other boards kept telling me I needed to go to school, and do this and do that-- while I kept telling you that I could not afford to stop working, that I had to make the money for my kids to stay where we are. Just pointing out the hypocrisy of you people who know who you are. This woman is doing exactly what you all told me for YEARS I needed to do................ but you don't like her, either. Just whining and bitching is what you are doing, about anything and everything.

In this case, however, Williams-Bolar's options were limited. Copley-Fairlawn, the School District where her father resides, does not have open enrollment. Nor does the District participate in "Voluntary Transfer Programs" (formerly known as "desegregation") which allows a select number of inner city youths to be voluntarily bussed to "majority"/white schools. So what is a mother in her situation to do? If her children were otherwise properly admitted as an out of district resident, she could have paid roughly $800 monthly tuition, which, as a recipient of public assistance she surely couldn't afford. Her other alternative, once discovered, was to pay the district restitution and begin paying tuition or remove her children from school. Apparently, other families who were caught in the same act did one or the other, while Williams-Bolar apparently did neither.

At the risk of sounding callous, she should have known that she was headed for trouble by bucking that system. After all, this district, which was awarded with an Excellence With Distinction Award by the State of Ohio, is the same school district that reportedly offered a whopping $100 to anyone who turned in illegally enrolled students. That makes it painfully apparent that they take residency requirements seriously, and aren't going to take this defiance lying down. As a result, they sued Williams-Bolar and her father.

Four years ago, Williams-Bolar, 40, sent her girls, now 12 and 16, to the Copley-Fairlawn school district that was outside her Akron district of residence, reports said. Her father lives in the Copley-Fairlawn district, and she said she lived with him part-time after her home was burglarized and she wanted her children safe.

"When my home got broken into, I felt it was my duty to do something else," Williams-Bolar said, according to ABC.

But the district accused the aspiring teacher of lying about her address, falsifying records and having her father file false court papers to circumvent the rules, ABC said. The school asked her to repay $30,000 in tuition, saying her daughters were getting a quality education without paying taxes to contribute to the cost. She refused and was indicted.

I stated that the felony seemed over the top, and after reading more about the case, it seemed like a harsh punishment even if she did not agree with making restitution. I applaud her for trying to obtain a better education for her kids. I also see the school system's concerns regarding budget concerns, etc. All that being said, I wish this had not reached such an extreme and I still think a felony conviction was a harsh punishment for what she did, and the reasons she did it.

Don't you people have open enrollment? In california you can apply for inter and intradistrict transfers and they happen quite frequently. We did it for a couple of years.

If the grandfather lived in the district, then he was in essence paying property taxes to go to the school (renters pay property taxes through their rent). I don't see what the big issue was on the subject...if the kids lived with him, it wouldn't have been an issue and they wouldn't have requested more money. I don't see why they are requesting tuition now as long as somebody is paying. It's not like nobody lived in the district and they just completely made up an address where there was no relation.

A better school is not a necessity(she is a teachers aide, just provide more schooling at home)therefore she has no reason to do wrong for her child's sake. Now if the child's life was in imminent danger or the child was starving that would be a different story.

Let's face it. This what would have been called "de-facto" segregation back in the day ~ an example of "limousine liberals" pushing "public schooling" while, due to their financial situation, avoiding the consequences.
You say this is economic segregation, not racial? Well. Who tends to live in low income areas? Not that it makes a lot of difference. The poor are generally discriminated against more so than "minorities."

I understand that, but think back to all the hooplah over the fire department that refused to provide service to a resident outside their district....and how angry people were over it. In a way, (ignoring the emergency part of it) this is no different. Just another outsider wanting something for free.

Good thought and I think she's been released from jail. She was to serve 10 days and I thought I read she'd been released early.

Actually, EVERYONE living in that school district is paying property taxes that go toward the schools for the children living in that school district.
