He is that way for sure. His dad has been dead for over 25 years. It's just easier to go along. But when he complains, I point out that carrying dead weight is bad for business.

Here in the Midwest $8 an hour will probably get you a teen who calls in sick. A lot. If they are serious about hiring someone who is reliable, they will raise their pay. Otherwise, they'd better get used to an empty desk... Here it will get you that same teen or a majorly pissed off adult. The problem is that the economy has been sooooooo crappy. My business owner friends are crying in their beer about how bad business is and that they feel like they haven't made any money in years. As a result when they have to get a paid employee they put free ads out and pay admittedly crappy wages. They are actually pissed that they have to pay anything knowing they won't make much if anything after paying it. The employees feel used and abused for doing 3 jobs, when only hired for 1, for crappy wages and getting bitched out everday, it seems, for things that are completely out of their control. Have a captioned everyone's pain?

Well said Beachbum. And add that a lot of companies have cut benefit packages to their employees. There's little incentive to work for a company with low wages, no health insurance, and no retirement plan. Might as well work in fast food, and even McDonald's has a benefit plan for part-timers.

Well, if you prove your value to a company, they will do what they can to keep you. If not, you make contacts and can get a better job eventually. Any job is better than no job at all unless you are also willing to suck off the taxpayers.

I really don't understand why anybody would bother to rant about this. If you don't want the job, then don't take it. If the $8/hr job is the only one that will take you, then that is probably all you are worth.

My husband is English and finds haggling and personal discussions extremely uncomfortable (he'd probably use the term "unseemly".) He'd much rather just pay full sticker price on a car than discuss price with a salesperson. When we caught one employee smoking pot, he rationalized it that at least it was after work so maybe it wasn't a big deal rather than have the uncomfortable talk of firing the employee. So guess who does the car buying and dealing with employees in our house? HAHAHAH, that's funny. Somehow I always pictured your husband as a southern Yank, although admittedly you don't mention him much.

When I see the expectations for a job paying $8 an hour, I don't even bother applying. I have to drive 20 miles each way to get there and many of them are not full time. I'm retired. I will live off my pension and my $11 per hour 20 hours per month job 3 miles away.
