Yes, I know that's not the point, but I am curious - how much are ORGANIC burgers?

I used to feel sorry for the dogs with homeless people, but then I thought about what their life was like and realized that every single dog I've ever had would have been thrilled if we were homeless. Spending every minute of the day together, eating garbage, getting to walk around all the time, never being left alone - it's not that bad a gig for a dog.
So again, I definitely would have bought the guy a burger, but the dog can eat leftovers. Dogs like leftovers and there's no way I'm buying an organic burger for any dog; not mine and not a homeless one.

It is kind of hard to sort out someone in need versus someone just trying to get something for nothing. I guess you just have to trust your instincts.

As long as it's food, I don't really care if someone gets something for nothing. If I've got it, and they don't, I don't mind sharing.

Yes, I would buy someone food - standing in line and they want food from the place - sure, why not? I would chat him up, too - ask him what lead him to this point in his young life.
On the other hand, my friend had to kick out her drug using, drop out, lying stealing 18-year-old son a few weeks ago hoping he would see how hard it is to survive and she would not want it to be so easy for him to find food. I mean she's been telling him people aren't just going to give you food and money and then some stranger at the food place is willing to buy him a meal just because he asks for one.

Never thought of that. But not all will give a meal. I would be more inclined to feed the dog but since the guy is there with the dog, what are you going to do?

Yes, I know that's not the point, but I am curious - how much are ORGANIC burgers? Yes, I was wondering this too. $3.45 is what this place charges which is actually really reasonable for an organic burger. They are a little on the small side though... We several organic places in my city (it is a big thing where I live) and most of them charge closer to $6 but they are a bit larger.

I would've bought a burger too. I'm a sucker for pets but in the heat of the moment probably wouldn't thought of the dog more "Is this a scam, what's the kid's angle, am I in a threatening situation etc". Similar to others my fraud meter goes up when asked for money but if someone specifically asks for item (food, bus ticket, use my cell phone) I consider my surroundings then decide. I'm not wanting for anything, especially money, but been in situations where I've had to ask a stranger for all three of those due to circumstances and luckily wasn't denied.

Wow, I think that's cheaper than McD burger - not bad at all.
To answer OP - I probably wouldn't. I just don't trust people, I want to, I really really really do, but I don't. For one, there are many places to get free food. And two - if you seem like an able body adult, I can't help but think - why aren't you trying to earn that burger/bus ticket, etc etc. Even if it's a BS line, I would be much more willing to buy it if he said "hey, is there anything I can help you with in exchange for a burger".....

Yes.
I have heard so many stories about people begging for money, and people offering to buy them food instead of giving them money, and the beggars answering (sometimes very rudely) that they asked for money, not food. Which implies to me that they're buying drugs and / or alcohol.
So, OP, definitely yes.

How did you decide that this was a needy person? Since the request was for food not money I guess I would have bought it & talked with the guy. Although I'm not sure there is anywhere you can get a real burger for $3.50 here! McD's and Jack in the box charge that much for theirs!!
We have street beggars that wear $9 fancy lace pantyhose. They pull in $800-$1000 per week. They aren't hurting at all, just found an easier way to make their money. Some people that beg use it as a way of life & aren't on hard times at all. It is so hard to tell. For a long time I let agencies decide who needed my money, but they scammed me even worse (thieving execs), so then I donated ONLY to homeless causes for children. Schools that were specially set up to accommodate the additional needs of homeless kids are my preferred charity.

I probably would have bought him a burger. I don't give money to people who hang out on the streets with a sign saying their homeless though. We see a couple like that all the time at the same shopping centers. DH gave one guy some money once, but we've seen him outside of Trader Joe's so I guess he's not really homeless. He always seems to be there on sunny days and never at night which makes me wonder if he's really homeless.

I'd have bought the kid and his dog a burger. Our route home from work used to take us under an underpass where there were always people panhandling. We got to the point where we packed an extra piece of fruit, every day to give to whoever was there. And on days when we didn't eat what we had brought (like pb&j sandwiches) or whatever, we'd give that to whoever was there. Never once were any of the folks we gave food to anything but grateful. For a while there was a family there, with a toddler. For the couple of weeks we saw them, we made an extra sandwich and packed extra packets of little fruit chew snacks. We'd hand them to the parents who always said thank you, and immidiately gave their child something to eat.
