Verizon is advertising they will have a $30 data plan. Is that on top of the calling plan? Would the total monthly bill be about $80 plus taxes? Does the data plan include GPS? Is it just internet access?
I still have a Dumb Phone so I don't quite understand the whole deal.

Yes, the data plan is on top of the calling plan. It would include GPS if the phone has GPS capabilities.

Their cheapest shared plan is about $70 for two phones, then add $30 per phone for the data plan and it's now $130 before taxes. If you add the $5 per phone for 250 text messages, it'd run about $150 total for two phones with taxes and fees. Our current (legacy, no longer offered) plan totals less than $60/mo including texting, fees and taxes. DH wants the iphone, but it's a hard decision - whether it's worth an additional $90/mo....

tea4me,
I just recently switched to a smartphone.
The $30 data plan is for the unlimited data.
They also have a $15 data plan which is for 150 MBs. I monitored what I used last month and I only used less than 20% (23 MBs or so). I do not have Pandora running all day long and I don't check email or facebook on the phone. The only times I use the 3G is for the navigation. If I need to download something, I wait until I'm at home and use Wi-Fi. Texting is on a separate plan.
If I went over, they would have charged another $15 for every 150 MB I went over. If you are going to use your phone for internet and GPS alot when you're not home, go ahead and go for the $30 unlimited plan.

DH and I upgraded to smartphones on Verizon around May of last year (we got tired of waiting for the iPhone and went with the HTC Incredible - turns out I like my personal Android phone better than the iPhone I ended up with for work.)
Our total monthly bill is ~$119. But we've got a grandfathered voice plan that's only ~$50/month for 500 shared minutes. DH's second line is $10/month. We've each got 250 texts (total of $10/month) and unlimited data (total of $60/month). We then save a bit because my line is subject to a 20% discount thanks to my employer.

This is DF and I, although thanks to a 15% employer discount, we come out a little lower. But yeah, going from $80/mo just for voice and texting, all the way up to $140+ with 2 data plans was tough to swallow. The data plan is absolutely 100% frivolous, but is a LOT of fun to have, and I've enjoyed every minute of it.
It has also "saved" me some money, in the sense of being able to access comparison prices, amazon reviews, and so on right in a store. It prevented DF from blowing over $100 on a hair straightener that was "highly recommended" by the store, but poorly rated online.

I'm glad we didn't downgrade to this, since we usually use over 150MB/month. I'm afraid that the unlimited plan is being phased out, and one day will not be available.

We probably WILL do this later this year (after our RV is paid off we'll have quite a bit of extra discretionary funds). I'm contemplating keeping the old plan for the grandkids to use. Gotta think that one through. I don't want to start something that I might not want to continue...

I'm getting this impression as well, and wonder - if we ARE going to make the change, maybe we'd better not put it off.....
