I finally realized how much crap I had when I was packing for the hurricane last year. Trying to figure out what I actually needed to save versus how much space there was, was an eye-opener. I had one suitcase and a duffel that I threw in my trunk with my birth cert/social, jewelry box, and a weeks worth of clothes. I packed up my comics, toys and coats and stored them upstairs in my mother's spare bedroom. The rest.... I ended up throwing out hundreds of books that were waterlogged, a couch, clothes, etc. I still have over 15 rubbermaid totes to go through - I have no idea what is in them.
In moving back into my space, now I find that I don't want to bring anything in that doesn't have a very specific home. I also have switched to mostly paperless bills, and didn't renew any of my magazine subscriptions.

In technical terms - a shitload. I try not to hoard crap, but it's amazing what you find in the closet when you're looking for something else after you've been in a place for a while.

I went into the garage the other day, and made the mistake of looking up. In the rafters are enough trophies to last a school several years. My dad's from coaching basketball, and my four sisters' track, volleyball, basketball, double dutch, and softball ones. Not a single one is mine

My parents have been in their house since 1977. The 5 of us lived there and had plenty of space. Now that it has been just the two of them in that house for 25 years, they decided to put on an addition, and every closet has stuff in it.

I still have boxes from moving 2 years ago. Until we get the den built out it's pretty much hopeless. I did shred a ton of old documents that I was holding onto for no particular reason. I also have 3 boxes of stuff ready to go to goodwill, but when we will actually get around to taking them there is another story.
