It is nice though that like most kids he did grow out of it. ;D He is lucky, I am jealous. I don't care if I can never drink milk, or eat cheese, or ice cream. But, I would so love to be able to go to a restaurant & do something as simple as just eating the bread or be able to eat somewhere like subway, where cross contamination with all the cheeses is way too big of risk to consider ever trying. Sigh, maybe someday. I know they have been working on a cure for peanut allergies.

[When I asked how he got whatever they said they gave it to him because they knew that I was confused when I said he was allergic and that he was really just lactose intolerant. I really, really hate well-meaning adults who think they know better than the parents or the kids. I've read a few sad stories about kids who said, "I can't eat X" and parents of friends who fed it to them anyway figuring it wouldn't be that bad for them. You almost have to train them to say, "If I eat X I stop breathing and you'll have to take me to the hospital". Pretty heavy stuff for a 4-year old.

I really don't get the insistence that someone should not describe and intolerance as an allergy. Really if you are a teacher or a DCP or a parent hosting an event - do you want to feed something to a child that is going to make them upchuck in your living room or give them uncontrollable diarrhea? They you will get to deal with the results.
I am lactose intolerant and if I really feel the need to eat something that will give me diarreah, I am only willing to do it at home and then very very rarely. I really don't miss eating ice cream or chocolate cake etc etc. I associate those things with making me sick. Getting into a long discussion with someone about why I should just take some lactaid is not fun. I agree that sometimes just saying you are not hungry is best.
BTW: Golden rule you went above and beyond for YDS's trip but I am also very impressed with the teacher that made this work for YDS.

Sigh, maybe someday. I know they have been working on a cure for peanut allergies. I do understand how you feel a little bit. Even though I have never been allergic to anything we didn't go out to eat for maybe 3 years because of it. It was just way to stressful. I couldn't get over being terrified that he would grab a breadstick or feeling guilty about us going and leaving him home. He didn't do many play dates either. It was just literally too stressful on us and seemed not worth the risk. I often wonder if maybe that is why he seems so ADHD. He didn't get as much chance to play with other kids with no adult interferance. Or to eat at even a McDonalds and play in the play thing or Chuckie Cheese and run around like the rest of the kids till he was older. Maybe that is why he is so obsessed about places like that. Is it easier to handle as an adult than if it were your child?

Is it easier to handle as an adult than if it were your child? Way easier. Partly because it is more common now, so when I explain dairy allergy people don't assume I mean lactose intolerance. Plus atkins made it popular to order a burger with no bun, so fewer weird looks over getting that at a restaurant ;D. And ingredient listings have far improved from 25 yrs ago. I think the worst was 8-13 years old. I was old enough to understand what I could & couldn't eat, but most kids my age didn't get it. My parents tried so hard to make me not feel left out, but often that made it worse. Instead of being the kid that didn't eat cake at some party, now I was the kid whose mom brought her a special cake of her own. That IMO was worse. Now that I am an adult I can explain it & most people seem to understand. I still have a few people that are difficult - I think my boss is either an idiot or believes I make it up. Everytime I eat something like pizza at work he comments that he thought I can't eat pizza. Yeah, this is a homemade cheeseless pizza, not the same thing you get when you order dominos. He always likes to offer me stuff like chocolate, sometimes it really feels like he is just trying to catch me in my "lie".

Whats the most offensive snack I could bring then? Mini meatball subs with peanut butter pie and a milkshake? I think I've covered it being unfriendly to the kosher, halal, gluten-free, nut-allergic, lactose intolerant, and hindu crowds...

Don't forget the mozzeralla cheese, mushroom, and peppers on the subs. And you should probably throw in some shellfish too. And strawberries. That snack would make me very happy.

BTW: Golden rule you went above and beyond for YDS's trip but I am also very impressed with the teacher that made this work for YDS. Yes, ITA. Both the House Leader and YDS's homeroom teacher went the extra mile for us in several ways, most especially allowing us to craft a strategy that would maximize YDS's independent experience and minimize my interactions with YDS. But, I'm thinking you have to have an unusually flexible personality to begin with if you're a teacher willing to chaperone 200 or so 8th graders to D.C. for 4 days, LOL. They're good kids, but they *are* 13 and 14 years old. Wisely, those kids were kept moving from early morning until 10:00 at night -- and consequently so were the teachers. I bet some of the teachers are still recovering. ;D

Pulled pork sandwiches with a soy based barbecue sauce, and peanut butter milkshakes. Make sure the rolls/buns aren't gluten free. Oh, and find a way to slip some shellfish into the sandwiches. That should kill, sicken, or offend pretty much anyone with dietary restrictions.

I was also considering some sort of creamy beef curry. Or perhaps one of those Thai dishes that has meat, seafood, dairy, soy, and peanut all in one.
I remember as a kid, the popular snack at half time was orange slices. Hopefully you can't go wrong there unless you don't get organic oranges and you fail to wash the pesticides off.

It's already a peanut butter milkshake... aren't peanut and tree nut allergies highly correlated? Although I guess it wouldn't hurt anything to throw in some other nuts.

Eh... only weirdos eat the rind anyway. If anyone give you crap about your non organic oranges let them know that they're an idiot.

I'm guilty of this. I have a friend whose son is allergic to: Peanuts, Soy, Eggs, Wheat and Dairy (I think there is one more - maybe strawberries?) And I believe my answer was "Holy crap, what is left??!!" We eat a lot of dairy and a lot of eggs - but honestly, not having bread or pasta to me would be very difficult, and boring. I mean, I cook a lot of what my kids eat - but - it would be a big adjustment to move to a rice-based bread (I hear it is terrible.)
I know I'm an insensitive jerk - but food brings me a lot of joy, and putting that many restrictions on it would make me sad.

No they have nothing to do with each other. Peanuts are a legume. When little kids get allergies to peanuts though they normally get real cautious about tree nuts though. Then again maybe they are trying to drive you nuts?

Candice from Phineas and Ferb says "Cool Beans" a lot. But in one episode she said "Cool Legumes." I love that show.

I can tolerate most of it except soy. Of course I also don't usually have sandwiches every day for lunch or anything like that. I'm also wary of eating just eggs since it set off the allergy attack from hell. It makes for interesting meal planning. I'm glad none of mine are life threatening.

I've never had a reaction to shots before and did the HPV series with no problems. I never do flu shots so no problems there.
