2200 sq ft 3 level townhouse (3 bed, kitchen, LR, DR, family room, garage), moved 1.4 miles, $1500. I did all the packing.

Carl, a cautionary tale:

We moved ten miles two years ago when we bought this house.

We had 2 months to move stuff.

DH and I were 50 years old. DH said he could do a lot of the moving himself with my 2 sons helping.

At some point during the process, DH managed to slip his L5 disk in his spine and then break a piece off and it lodged in his sciatic nerve. He essentially became lame. The pain was excruciating for 4 months until he had neurosurgery to remove the piece and repair the slipped disk.

During the last week we had left on the townhouse lease, we had to scramble big time and ended up having to hire some guys from his plant and rent a truck and it cost us about $2100.

The surgery cost close to $50k (fortunately, insurance covered it). It took him a good 6 months to feel normal again.

Let the pros do it. You're young and in good health, but your job is physically demanding and a back injury could really cost you.

I am just going by what Cawaiu posted in the OP.

Archie got it right but I disagree the $500 was worth it.

They paid for the UHaul, gas, mileage for 2 cars, breakfast and dinner, etc.

The $500 was an incentive for you to do it yourself and after I did it I can say it was not worth it. Which is why this time I am going with the movers.,. But wondering if going the extra mile which is having them pack also was necessary or lazy?

But yeah after moving twice on my own (2008, 2010) I swore to myself I would go with movers every chance I get.

And I always have water, Gatorade for the movers. Also treated them to pizza last time and a nice tip.
