to find out that my (awesome) boss and his (also awesome) boss went to bat with the powers that be to get me a step increase. No longer am I on the bottom of the ladder! And it came with a 3% raise, effective today. Did I mention my bosses are awesome? They really are. I am a terrible salary negotiator and we don't really have much room for negotiation, anyway (a job pays what it pays for X years of experience and X qualifications). Apparently step increases without a promotion are not super common, but they told me they were very happy with my work and wanted to thank me somehow. (I just had to post this somewhere, and I can't gloat on Facebook, I don't want to be ninja-unfriended )

Wow, congratulations.
You work for the state, but it sounds like the state equivilant of a quality step increase in the federal government. They hardly ever give those out and you have to pretty much walk on water to get one. Your bosses must really like your work.

I think some groups are limited by their rules to say one quality step increase a year.
Congratulations mid!

Thanks, everyone! Hopefully I get some more info tomorrow, I wasn't paying very much attention (when my boss came by and said "HR wants to see you before you leave" the flow of blood to my brain may have stopped for a few minutes ). Not sure if it's a step increase or just a reclassification... I'm not even 100% sure of my new salary.

Good for you!! Needless to say, Phil expects you to increase your 401K as of yesterday!! Lena I believe she is already maxing her 401k. So this money is for her to spend as she sees fit (vacation??). Mid if you are contributing based off percentage instead of set amount, you will need to change it. Most importantly: CONGRATS!!!!

WTG, Mid!!! Ignore all the other suggestions to spend the raise. Invest it immediately at 11% to avoid a cat-food-eating retirement. ;D

Update - the numbers HR quoted me yesterday were old (we got a 2.2% raise across the board in February) so my new salary is $1K higher than I thought it would be Total salary increase is about 6% from the first of the year. Carl, thanks for the reminder to change my % toward retirement - I think it will still be OK this year since I didn't start maxing til late Feb, but next year I'm going to have to bump it down to avoid going over. Annoying how they won't let you just put a $ amount and be done with it... (#firstworldproblems ) Thank you all so much for the congrats and kind words. It means a lot.
