I did not stop being a resident of my home city and state when I was stationed on the other side of the world. You probably didn't rent your house out while stationed on the other side of the world either. Some other current/former military person would have to address this issue. I was young and did not own a house when I was serving our nation. I fully support individual freedom within the context of a society in which we are interconnected. Your generalized statement of condemnation is unsupportable in my case.

SO-- in plain English, what are you saying, Bill?? You are okay with gov't stacking the votes for the future, no matter where the political vote stackers live?

SO-- in plain English, what are you saying, Bill?? I am saying that there should be few, if any, restrictions that keep a person from having their name appear on the ballot. This empowers the voters in the election to select any individual to represent them that they desire. I have no idea what you mean here. What I am okay with is open elections in which eligible voters are able to cast and have counted their votes. I am not okay with is anything less than honest reporting of the results of such a process. If enough of the voters select individuals who have engaged in political shenanigans to represent them, that is the will of the people.

Including my freedom not to purchase a product or service if I choose not to? A question with many tentacles with which to ensnare. I do support that we have elected representatives who are empowered to tax us and use that money for as they determine with the people always having the power to change those representatives and putting in their place individuals who would make different decisions. I do support that if an individual chooses to drive a vehicle on public roads, that they undertake steps to protect the financial interests of others using those roadways by either carrying insurance or posting a bond. I know that health care/insurance is one of the major issues we are dealing with currently. I do not believe we have had an honest discussion on exactly what we are going to have to do to deal with the issue. I do not have an answer to it.

SO-- Rahm could run in AZ-- if the voters in AZ like him? I do support the right of individuals to place their names on a ballot. If the majority of the voters in an election wish to have that person represent them, they should have that right. So the answer to your question is, "Yes he could run and if a majority voted for him, he should be allowed to serve them."

And if the majority of people in New Hampshire agree with you, congratulations. What do you have against allowing the voters to make the decision?

................ Think................ krickett, you ask me to think. I ask the same of you. What would be the reaction of the vast majority of voters in Arizona if Emanual placed his name on the ballot? My guess would be that they would say, "You have got to be joking! I will not vote for him." Then say he started to campaign and, one by one, individual voters decided that he would be the best person to represent them (for whatever reason). When the vote is taken, it is determined that he was able to convince a majority of the voters that he was the best person for the job. What is wrong with that?

lol....That was one hell of a tap dance Bills. Perhaps you missed your true calling in life.
And yet so many on the left support a bill that removes a portion of my freedom of choice without that honest discussion. Why is that?

lol....That was one hell of a tap dance Bills. Perhaps you missed your true calling in life. And yet so many on the left support a bill that removes a portion of my freedom of choice without that honest discussion. Why is that? Yankee your a intelligent person, while we disagree on many issues, that has no bearing on my feeling of the fact that you are a thought full person or not, just issues we have a different out look on, not all but many. In the realities of life , life is filled with decisions made when the one they will effect have no say in the matter. " "yet so many on the left support a bill that removes a portion of my freedom of choice " It has nothing to do with left/right, upside/downside..just the way it is. Possible the benefit of the many is more important then the benefit to the one, or something along those lines. We don't have a choice as to which topics that our tax dollars are spent on. I have no kids in schools anymore, possible i may have had no children ever , thus no need for the item. My feelings on all those items that taxes are spent on, trust me there are many I don't support and would love to be able to say they won't be supported by my dollars, and I know you feel the same way. Back in the day..my President sent me a personal letter, started off 'Greetings..", now there I definitely had a objection..to no avail. This program on the health intuitive works only if all are enrolled, the benefit of the many over the few. same thing and since most of those who are objecting will possible , in time , want to have such a program since in time the medical costs will still be rising to unacceptable height and there is a good chance more and more businesses will stop offering or cut down as they are doing now their share % toward the cost, in the long run it will be looked on, the program as a god send. Is it a perfect program? Of course not. Could it need tweaking, improving, add some take away other..of course, what program is perfect...but over all , that all can be covered, even Krickett and her family in time, the now in effect pars of it on the non cancellation for0r prior, children under parents coverage till 26 and other features..plus eventually the 30 million not covered , being coverd..its here, it's needed and for me...glad to see it.

If someone does not meet the residency requirement then there should be a stipulation that they must get signatures of 25% of the registered voters in that district on a petition and then allow them to run.

I think that the 25% is a little high (I am thinking as much about the expense of verifying that many signatures - especially if we were talking about a federal Senate candidate in a state like California - as the getting them in the first place) but I like the general concept.

(Reuters) - A state appeals court ruled on Monday that Rahm Emanuel, President Barack Obama's former chief of staff, cannot run for mayor of Chicago in February because he was not a resident of the city for a full year before the election. http:// www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE70N56D20110124Ill. high court: Emanuel can run for Chicago mayor Ruling revives campaign of Obama's former chief of staff Emanuel lived for nearly two years in Washington working for President Barack Obama until he moved back to Chicago in October to run for mayor. Emanuel, who has said he always intended to return to Chicago and was only living in Washington at the request of the president, had asked the Supreme Court to overturn the appeals court ruling. Within minutes of the ruling, Emanuel was at a downtown Chicago public transit station shaking hands with residents. www.msnbc.msn.com/id/41291795/ns/politics-more_politics

Wonder if a majority of the appeals court who ruled he couldn't run might have not been great supporters of him ?

deziloooooo,
"It has nothing to do with left/right, upside/downside..just the way it is"
I beg to differ on that, I think a lot has to do with left or right because that is the way the majority of people perceive politics today. The last time I checked it matters what the mob thinks or the individual/small group smart enough to manipulate the mob.
The last time I checked we always have a choice, it just depends on the consequences you are willing to take.
I don't care for the health bill at all personally. That is just because I don't need health care. I have the solution to the out of control health care cost and it is real simple.
Wait for it, wait for it ........
Have people become more intelligent and make the right choices on diet and exercise, I believe it is called "preventative maintenance". This though will probably put a lot of pharma companies out of business, which will never happen (unless the human race wants to decide to become moral, ethical and truly intelligent) because the #1 lobbyist in D.C. is ............. . The pharma companies support our representatives hobbies, habits and greed(what kind of choice do you think they will make).
Don't get me wrong I try to be the most positive yet simple person that i can even with my fallacies. I spend my money on necessities (rent, utilities and food) and pretty much give away the rest to other people that are in need (single mothers, poor or those that just can't simply afford the necessities). I think charity is great, but only in the form of giving it freely to others. Forcing somebody by law to pay for others that can't take care of themselves is pushing on the boundary of slavery.
Sorry br2 didn't mean to sway so far away from the topic. I do think that it isn't going to make much of a difference if Rahm Emanuel gets on the ballot. I agree with Billisonboard's line of thinking(correct me if I am wrong) that residency in the end will really not matter. You could live in Illinois you whole life and not know a darn thing about Illinois politics, you could live in California and be associated with politics your whole life could know a lot about Illinois just through association. It matters on the intelligence of the being running for office or in terms of most politicians the cleverness( i prefer to use the term intelligence with people that have a good moral basis).

I agree,Flordia. They seem to like him,so be it. It is Obamas connection to him I hate. Kinda like Bill Daley being tapped for a job with him...Bill Daley is actually a pretty moderate guy.He is very center, but now he is ruined for life....

Nothing about this particular case interests/involves me.

Doesn't really matter what one thinks is right or wrong. We are supposed to be governed by our current law. If you don't like it then gather support to change it.

I am surprised the judge whose husband has ties to Rahms closest rival in the election was allowed to hear the original case. Her "we women have minds of our own" defense did not impress me.
