Anyone do yoga at home? BF is interested in starting yoga for relaxation, but doesn't want to start a class knowing nothing (and looking like a fool, I guess). I figured we'd try it at home and then we'd go to the yoga studio near us, if we so desire. So if anyone has some DVD recommendations, lay 'em on me!

"Debby does Dallas". Wait that wasn't yoga. LOL. My wife goes to classes. I did for a while. She has a video but I think it helps if you know the moves from a class beforehand. I'll check to see what DVD she has.

I yoga! And yes, I do it at home. I currently own Yogaworks Bodyslim, but there are a lot of On Demand offerings for yoga workouts. If you have Comcast, I'd have him check out what they offer right now for free. There is one workout in particular that he might like as it's more relaxation-oriented: Yoga On Edge - Sunset. I believe the instructor is Sara Ivanhoe. This workout has some strength poses but it's mostly stretching.

I am a fan of Denise Austin. Her DVD took me from knowing nothing to feeling confident that I could do the whole thing without any problems. I bought DVD's off of Ebay.......

Check out the Yoga, Yoga, Yoga thread on Market Talk. I made the mistake of opening that thread at work. Not exactly what I want on my screen at work.

We opt not to have cable, but I will google the yoga on edge and see if I can find something. He's having a lot of job-related stress and it's affecting his sleep and coping ability. I keep telling him to take a deep breath, but I think he needs something to help him concentrate on breathing technique. Relaxation yoga is something we both could use, to be honest, but I've dealt with a lifetime of anxiety, so he needs it more than I.

See what your library has to offer. I checked out dozens of work out DVDs before I committed to buying anything. Netflix may also have some yoga videos as well, if you have that. I know they do workout videos.

I go to a yoga studio - they offer lots of beginner classes catering to the newbie. No one is gonna care what your BF's downward dog looks like. If they're anything like me, they're gonna be thinking - How much longer do I have to hold this pose? Good grief my arms are burning! No, NOOOO, not five more breaths!

meghan, the classes were best for me after work with my wife. At the end there was a relaxing part with the lights dimmed while the instructor spoke to us.

Thanks everyone! Like I mentioned, BF is dealing with a lot of stress and anxiety at work, which he isn't used to so is having a terrible time dealing. I've had anxiety my whole life, so feeling insane is nothing new to me. But I just want him to take an interest in bettering himself, so something we can do at home in addition a class (if he chooses) is a definite plus. Friday night drinking and listening to music works for us right now, but it might be prudent to have do something that doesn't include scotch and wine.

"something that doesn't include scotch and wine" <<unfriends Meg>>. Just kidding. I know, right? Mind you, I am drunk on wine right now, but that doesn't matter.

No, sage just means ass - [j/k -- it actually means wise]
(But being called a wise-ass makes more sense than being called a wise-wise)

Yoga is fantastic! Find something nice & relaxing to start him with, look for some kripalu yoga. I have never used a DVD, I just go to classes - I've done kripalu, hatha & power, and kripalu is a wonderful place to start - lots of breath and stretching & focusing on consciousness.

Allow me to introduce you to the most effective stress relaxer for a man. It's called sex. The more yoga you do, the better the results for him

Seriously. I am truly pathetic. When I read what everybody does to stay in shape I get sad that I don't even know 1/2 the shit they are talking about! Couch 5K, various positions, various classes, equipment... I'm going to die of a major heart attack, I'm pretty sure about it. I just stretch, walk, ride a bike and garden. And lots of house work. My weight hasn't changed in over 30 years. But now I'm worried about my heart and arteries. Wait! Red wine is good for that, right? ETA: I do recognize Debbie does Dallas!

Silly boy - don't you know that yoga does more than relax you? It also makes you more flexible.

actually gardening is supposed to be pretty good for your health. And I miss having a bike. To not get fat I have to work out (and sweat) at least 5 times a week for at least 30 mins and eat healthily. I'm trying, but I can barely work out 4 times a week now.
