Waffle - Me too! I've taken to "wasting" a try when three or more letters are still unknowns.
CoffeeGirl - Why don't you evolve your start-of-the-word and end-of-the-word techniques with practice drills on the "secret word" game? That's what I did and it's been working well. The game is at the bottom of the screen. You choose the number of letters in each word, so you can practice on different word sizes.

I had all 9 letters after four tries, but it took another 2 turns to insert them in the right places.
This game's good spelling practice.
