It's "Family Day" in Canada today—a statutory holiday.
Forgive my ignorance, but is the same true for the US? Do you call it "Family Day" or something else?

It is President's day in the US. A great day to go buy a mattress.

President's Day is family day in a different way. There's no school, so I'm home with the kids....

Family Day in Canada is a day set aside for family unity. We're encouraged to spend the day doing things together - like visiting a zoo or museum, playing games, ice-skating - whatever. Depending on your family it's a fun day. ;D ![](http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr311/lautnergrl/Ass-Family.jpg)

It isn't Family Day in Canada, Virgil. ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png) It's Family Day in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario. According to my calendar, it's Islander Day in PEI and Louis Riel Day in Manitoba. The rest of us have to go to work today.

Family Day was first introduced in Alberta - in 1990 - to reflect on the values of family & home that were the foundation of the pioneers of Alberta and give workers time to spend with their families. Saskatchewan added Family Day in 2007, and Ontario in 2008.

Or a great day to lounge around and do nothing Or try and make a family ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/idunno.gif) No way!! DH is at work, the kids are with gramma, and I'm here all by myself and I'm enjoying every second of it. I might just break out the wine, pretty soon, but I planned on going for a walk when it warms up some more, and since I walk on the highway, I should probably wait until after to drink. I don't want to stagger in front of a truck.

During an undergrad course on engineering in ancient societies, I had the opportunity to do some research on Hellenistic Greece. The following interesting factoid came up: In the time of Plato and Aristotle, there was no such thing as weekends. There was no 7-day work cycle and work was ongoing. The only days off that workers and labourers got were national holidays. However... Although the number varied a bit by state, province, etc., a typical year contained 120 holidays. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/tongue2.png) They must have assigned one for virtually every religion and culture under the sun. If you compute 52 weeks x 2 days plus 7 stat holidays and one week at Christmas, you end up with 118 days off circa 2012. Hence, the Hellenistic Greeks enjoyed roughly the same number of days off that we do today, only on a very different schedule. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/nerdy.png)

There is nothing nicer than walking along side tractor trailers going 75 Mph... Especially in the dark! We need a family day! I'd go for sometime in late March, early April (aka the holiday dry season). There are 10 federal holidays where banks, post office, etc get the day off. They are not required to have school off for President's Day, but most do (our district had us go to school one year and they caught hell from the parents). Columbus Day isn't required for schools either. New Years MLK Jr Day President's Day Memorial Day Independence Day Labor Day Columbus Day Veteran's Day Thanksgiving Christmas
