Boy, do I have a good topic that should put a fire under some butts. I just read an article that some cruise lines have lesbian only cruises. There are functions that are described as black man's march and other events that include only black people. If this can be and not be described as prejudice, why can't there be white women only cruises or marches or anything? I'm only trying to put some umph into the boards because lots of people are saying they're getting bored. Flame away.

Or Miss Black America...Al Sharpton would be screaming from the rooftops if there was a Miss White America....to me, that's reverse discrimination at its finest.

for the cruise, is the cruise line running the itinerary or is another group chartering the ship? if you are a charter, you can do what you want. I just returned from a concert-themed charter, and we did exactly that - whatever the hell we wanted.
Miss M - I would counter that the establishments you're referring to would happily welcome any heterosexual patrons that would stop in. that's been my experience, anyway.

Virtually I am totally a lesbian. <<looks up and drools>> Yes I think it's discrimination. I'm in the same position as MM, although even worse, since I'm male. Can you imagine if there were a National Association for the Advancement of White People? Or a United White Guy College Fund?

I am flashing back to the nights we'd head out in Boston/Cambridge - one of the guys was a bouncer at a gay bar in Cambridge. the guys in the group were always a little less buzzed those nights than usual. lol.. quite frankly, as I've learned from my ice hockey teammates and other friends who 'play for the other team', nobody's going to jump you if you're not interested. I've actually had better nights at the gay bar, because I was hanging out with my friends rather than scoping the scenery or worrying about whether I was being scoped out.

I think there was a time when things like Miss Black America and black colleges made sense. Now they just make me sad - so many people fought and some even died for civil rights, including integration and now people are self-imposing segregated pageants, schools, etc.

I completely agree that there were very good reasons for these organizations, and that they served a very important purpose. Now it emphasizes differences.

I totally agree, and want to add labor unions to this mix (to take it way OT) - there was a point in time where unions were necessary, but they can also go away.....quickly.

None of this really bugs me, nor do I put any thought into the levels of discrimination an all-gay cruise or Miss Black America possesses. As a boring ol' white, heterosexual female, my mere existence doesn't doesn't make some segments of society uncomfortable just being in my presence. Haven't lesbian cruises been around for a while now? I remember Rosie O'Donnell promoting one a few years ago.

Actually, I should note that the lesbian cruise doesn't bother me -- it's no different than a singles cruise.

Those cruise lines are incorporated in foreign countries so they don't follow our/U.S. prejudice dictates. They market to the people that buy their service.
POM: How did you get negative karma of -42,689?

Actually, I should note that the lesbian cruise doesn't bother me -- it's no different than a singles cruise. Just so long as they don't have mixed doubles cruises. That would really creep me out.

None of the Lesbian Cruises or Miss Black America bug me. What really irks me is when the race card is pulled during the most inappropriate time. Example: There has been a teenage girl missing in my area since right after Christmas. Her story has been on the news every day since. Morning, noon and night. There are billboards up and commercials for her safe return. Some business have donated money in return for tips in the case, etc. Just last night her parents spoke up and said, "If she were white more would be done to find her." Really? ?? What else would be done if she were white? Sad...just really, really sad.

Would you consider this a form of prejudice? I just read an article that some cruise lines have lesbian only cruises. There are functions that are described as black man's march and other events that include only black people.Of course it's prejudice. The thing that you have to understand is that prejudice is a one way sword. It can never be used by any majority. It's also only used as an attack weapon by a minority. Once used the one accused of it is fighting an uphill battle trying to prove that they aren't prejudice rather than addressing the original problem (whatever it was). Our country has gone way over the line of being PC. It also is being USED by minorities as an excuse & in a way I can see it. If I were pulled over by a policeman & he arrested me because I had 100 kilo of Cocaine in the car I would be standing on a chair yelling that the policemen were "profiling" & stopping all Indians on the road that day. Sooner or later I would get off, but I might not get my cocaine back.

Someone mentioned the national organization for the advancement of white people and a white person's college fund - both programs exist under other names, ie "Random Irish American Group" and "Random Irish American fund" - go ahead and replace Irish with german, italian, spanish, english, russian, etc etc. There are white people organizations, you just are too caught up in the perceived prejudicial nature of it all to find them The black man's march was open to everyone, btw. And there was a white man's march not too long ago - it was hosted by Glenn Beck
