The signs of good breeding, intelligence, and education is being able to get your point across without using obscene language. I have told people off sweetly and with a smile ...... and they have to think about what I said. I don't use those words to tell people off, necessarily. I use them as humor or to exclaim in excitement. But I'm from a military family and those words were acceptable. Good breeding many years ago does not mean what it does today. It's not based on a few curse words spoken out loud. And saying "fudge" instead of F___ means the same thing if used as a curse word. I find telling people off "sweetly" is passive aggressive. I can tell people off without using curse words. But I would not do it "sweetly". Sternly, perhaps, but not sweetly. That, to me, would be fake and bizarre. If the person leaves the conversation confused then they were not "told off". I'm just sayin'.

I'll admit I use the f-bomb probably more than I should. It just comes out during times or stress or anger, so between my job and being married, I guess I do let out my share of them. I haven't used it here or on any other board. No one's pissed me off enough...................yet.

It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.

I don't think you're a prude, happy. Everyone has a right to their own preferences. I don't care for obscenities/vulgarities myself, and don't use them; however, I've learned to sorta skip over them when reading message boards. It's not up to me to tell others what they should, or shouldn't say, I guess. If I were you, I just wouldn't worry about it. You can get the gist of a post while skimming over the garbage.

Are you a prude?
Possibly, but I don't think your distaste for the F-bomb seals it one way or the other.
I'm guilty of using it a lot in conversation, but it is not a word I use much in writing. To each one's own, but I think the suggestion of an optional content filter so that everyone could view and use the site in a manner of their choosing would be a good option.
As would a 2-part seminar on proper budgeting for hos and blow. Perhaps a webinar to broaden the potential audience?

Oh, that's just a giant steaming pile of horse shit. Now you see, I could have said feces or excrement or waste, but I really don't think they would have gotten my point across as well.
Some people swear and some people don't. I don't think choosing not to swear makes someone a prude necessarily. I do think that getting distressed reading a message board where some "colorful language" is tossed about sometimes (as opposed to in use constantly) would mark you as overly sensitive and a smidge silly, but that's just me. But swearing is not equivalent to bad grammar and lack of education.
ETA: "Good breeding?" Really? I think only someone who knows nothing about breeding would use that term to refer to anything but livestock these days.

My FIL, bless him, used a lot of 'colorful language' until the day DD, age 2, copied him word for word. He looked at me and asked me what she said. I told him 'exactly what you said'. Being the good bible belt Southern Baptist that he was, he cleaned it up around her. DD is almost 50 now and still have very clean language, at least around her mom. LOL
I still laugh at the memory of this.
