I have 2 weeks in July to go on vacation by myself. I was thinking of going to Athens but the more I look at it the less it appeals to me. It's a big city and that is not what I consider a vacation.
Anyone have any suggestions for 2 weeks on your own?

What are you looking for in terms of things to do, see, and in which to participate, later? Also, what are you looking for in terms of weather? Any special preferences? That might help.

I'm hoping people will tell me of things they have done that I don't know of.

If you want sun, beaches and swimming, check out The Dominican Republic - it's gorgeous.

I'm going in July so I was thinking of somewhere that wasn't always warm. I'm not a big partier but I want "an experience" if that helps with ideas.

Have you been to Denmark/Sweden/Switzerland? Those are great places to visit in July, and all have much to offer. I, personally, love Denmark. Laid back folks and an almost fairytale feel to it, with lots of cultural features. The food is also wonderful!

authentic ireland puts together some awesome packages (they sound really cool), but I know that when I had them quote me a trip the price seemed extremely high.
If you are doing a Europe trip already, what about Yellowstone Ntnl Park, or Hawaii, or India?

Hawaii in July sounds like a waste of the July weather if you know I mean. I'm not quite ready for India yet, but it is on the someday list. Yellowstone National Park? Other than Yogi and Boo Boo what have they got?

Switzerland would be great in July. Great chocolate and cheese, stunning scenery, great transportation system so you could cover alot of ground in 2 wks.

I'm not sure I'd want to do it by myself but visiting Scotland and England for castles, gardens, and a sheepdog tour was fun. Not really a culinary vacation though. The best food was in Glasgow and a small Scotland town. I'd consider going partly with a tour group if I went by myself. Of course you could always buy a Volvo, BMW or other car and pick it up overseas for your July vacation. Norway and Denmark looked pretty interesting back when I checked it out. Wandering through Spain trying to hit some of the spots Gwyneth Paltrow and friends did on that food series would be neat. Possibly not as relaxing but something I'd do is a spa vacation at Canyon Ranch or the lesser sibling to Golden Door in Mexico would be fun if you want a exercise oriented vacation. If you want a food vacation I highly recommend Cape May, NJ. July is peak season unfortunately but they have great Victorian B&Bs to stay at and tour plus lots of really great restaurants.

Spain and Portugal? You could spend several days at Ibiza (or one of the other beach spots in Spain), then hit up places like Sevilla, Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon (I'd just pick a couple) for cultural and other experiences. I studied in Sevilla in college, and loved it - gorgeous country, friendly people, fabulous food...

If you want to swim, sun yourself and relax, reconsider Athens. You can stay there a couple days, then head out to one of the Greek Islands.
I spent a week on Paros and that's all I did. I swam in the sea, sunned myself and relaxed in the sun. It was the most rejuvenating time had had in awhile.

Later, I absolutely loved Ireland--I'd go there in a heartbeat if the opportunity to work there ever happened. A beautiful country and the people I met were wonderful.

I loved Ireland too. My mother and I did a cycle trip through Western Ireland in summer of 2004. I thought it was a blast to ride around these small towns at midnight by myself and it was still light. Just remember that to be really loved you're going to have lie and say that you're from the U.S.

Wow, that is gorgeous! I googled and Myrtle Beach looks like a really interesting city. Is it as much fun as the advertising?

Hey Lateur, please let me know what they quote you for a single on the trip. I keep looking at their trips, but the prior one I had quoted, which I think was about three weeks long, made me fall off my chair, so I didn't ever book it. Just interested in seeing what the rates will be this year as I do need to take a real vacation in 2012 or 2013. I prefer trekking around Europe to cruising at this point.
