I have broken a Craftman socket and extension and used the only warranty that I consider worth a damn. No questions asked, they handed me the new tools and I walked out.

I totally forgot about home warranties! We've used it for the furnace and the stove. The sellers bought it for us.
DH uses the warranty on the cheap tools he buys from Harbor Freight all the time. One time his paint sprayer started shooting out flames.

I have never bought an extended warranty, and have never had the use for one either.

The only thing I've ever had repaired under warranty was my car... I've never used a warranty on anything else (or ever bought an extended warranty - not even on my car) - it seems like for things under $50.00 it would be cheaper just to buy a new whatever rather than pay to mail back the old one and wait to get a replacement. I have good luck with my appliances most of them are old, really old and in working order. If the $10.00 coffee maker dies before the 1 year warrenty expires I'll just buy a new $10.00 coffee maker - too expensive to mail it back to the manufacturer and I'm NOT living without coffee for more than 24 hours...

I've used the warranty on my van, a washing machine, and a laptop computer.
My favorite was a free digital camera, because while the one I had was under warranty it stopped working. The store manager said he had never seen anything like it (I take a lot of pictures, because I sell stuff on Ebay). It couldn't be fixed so they had to give me a new camera.

Only once, for my car. It needed a new catalytic converter, and my mechanic told me to take it to the dealership because it was probably still under warrantee (and sure enough, in MA Honda will guarantee a catalytic converter to 80K miles - and I was at 78,300). I've never bought an extended warranty and never plan to.

Oh, the computer in my Toyota had to be replaced. Thankfully, it was under warranty.
You do have to access the likelihood of something breaking. We bought the warranty on the dishwasher after we had to replace ours about every two years. Hard water was the primary culprit, I think. But it turned out the tub or whatever had broken on this one.
I bought one for $80 on the HP computer I just bought. Maybe it's a waste of $$$. But I also know that for 2 years I don't even have to think about computer replacement.
Some are no-brainers. If Macy's still sells the one they used to sell on fashion watches like Kenneth Cole, Fossil, Guess, Anne Klein, etc., it was wonderful. It gave you a discount on another watch and replaced yours for a couple of years. But the battery for life part was what was truly awesome. At the time (several years ago), replacing the battery was $8 at the local mall kiosk. Two batteries changes paid for the warranty. The sales people at Macy's (me and my friends) honestly didn't know how to remove the back on these watches so the store paid for the kiosk. What a loss for Macy's because I sold a ton of them by explaining the battery part.

Of course, I am confusing warranty and extended warranty. The Toyota was under regular warranty (came with the car). Most of my other examples were purchased warranties.
