Since I voiced a complaint (kind of), I'll say that I wasn't offended by formerexpat's post. Relaying a story of how a misunderstanding played out is different from saying if your ancestors are from a certain place and you act a certain way, I will call you a <<insert racial slur here>> because that's what you are.
That's what I got out of the post I mentioned. If I'm misunderstanding the intent, I have no problem being corrected.

Good grief!
We're all going to hell in a handbasket when we lose the right to be offend and be offended.

Popular cultural always puts spin on the original intent of words... it isn't about what they are 'meant' to mean, its about connotation, and the meaning people come to attach to them... (Haven't you heard my story about how conversation stopped dead on Art day when i happened to tell a mother that she shouldn't worry about how much red her daughter was using, cause we're 'liberal' with the paints in our house... ... )

I'm offended that you used the word "mouse" improperly. It's a slam against those cute furry creatures to compare them to something cold and hard.

HEY!!! I'm seeing a lot of "the" & "and" words out there! I told you those words offend me! Stop it...if you must use "and" then use the ampersand sign as I did above. All of you sicken me with your offensive, deragatory language!!

Years ago I watched an Oprah episode and learned that many Native Americans are offended by some commonly used words that refer to them, and why the words were offensive.
I don't remember it all, but what I do remember, I won't be using. I don't see what's so wrong about choosing not to use words that you know could be offensive or inflammatory. I can be ornery just like anybody else, but I usually try to be respectful and polite to people that haven't done anything to me. I also try to treat people the way I'd like to be treated. And all that other kumbahyah stuff. To me that's just part of living in a *civilized* society.
I CAN say whatever I want, however I want....... that doesn't mean I should. I'd like to be a better person than that.

Mom used a word I told her was offensive and she said she didn't care, using it anyhow. I asked if she wanted to be like her mother but she didn't now she uses the acceptable word.

I don't think people here are as clueless as they are claiming about what is potentially offensive. If it refers to ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or gender, it is potentially offensive. The "retard" comment was considered crude when I was in jr. high, and that was 40+ years ago. We were taught that you never know someone's situation . . . their brother or sister might be mentally handicapped.
On the other hand, I am very troubled that one of the problems with education seems to be my inability to say offensive words. Some of you are homeschooling so that your kids are able to read works that contain the f- and n-words? All I can say is, "Hmmm . . . " If that sounds silly, it is no sillier than some of the stuff I read about public education.

Well, I was also in junior high that many years ago and it was used freely and it meant someone who acted like a weirdo not as a slam against the handicapped. We didn't go to school with the handicapped back then so being PC would have been unheard of.

" If that sounds silly, it is no sillier than some of the stuff I read about public education." Was that me? ... Sorry, i don't remember... I guess i'm not sure what you mean... Personally, its not like it was one of the reason's i listed under Pro when deciding to homeschool (Can read the f-word...) ... However, we do expose our kids to lots of stuff that, if they were in school, might be considered 'innappropriate for their age'... (my 12 year old loves David Sedaris ) ... I am very intollerant of words/jokes that might be considered offensive to any subset of people... i don't let them use that language, but i would not leave it out of what we are reading... i would just explain the context of when/how it was used and we'd discuss it... ??

Which is HOW teachers explain it before they teach it.

I'm unclear on how a thread about the offensive nature of the word "midget" is now about homeschooling.
LOL

thyme, I guess I was the one who first tangentially misdirected this (but gently) but now I feel bad for the OP if she ever comes back to check this thread. But OTOH, why post such a message in this forum anyway? So... I don't know.
