Welcome, MommyC! I'm glad to see another 'turtle saver' (relatively speaking) like me! I was noticing today how many of the savers here have such huge number goals , and mine was looking kinda puny . I had to remind myself that it's the best I can do, and we're all in different situations. There are no small goals, only small savers!

Hey... you... yes, you. Quit looking around. I've seen you lurking there for a while now. I know you've been thinking about joining us but for some reason you still haven't. If you're waiting for a sign, this is it: Don't let those intimidating tables be your excuse anymore. You don't have to use them. Just post your goal... no, it's not too small. Don't try to use that excuse either. Just post. See the button right down there? Quit faking I know you see it. Click it. Post. Right now. I guarantee it'll be the smartest thing you do all day. Others - it's way past my bedtime so I'll do some shout-outs tomorrow. I promise.

Well, made my first official transfer of the year. I'm trying to figure out what I'm actually saving for. A house? Vacation? Both? In my savings here, I'm not counting my Roth, as that's automated and I count it as a bill to be paid each month. So, I'm essentially just saving $1000 each month for whatever right now. Not complaining at all, or trying to rub it in your faces, but I just happen to be in a very fortunate spot right now.
I know this isn't the place to ask, YM may be better suited for it, but I greatly value your opinions! Since I don't have a clear goal, would you suggest dropping my savings goal of $25k down to $20k and invest the rest? Or just keep on plugging to $25k? I don't see myself buying a house/townhouse/condo/cardboard box for quite some time, if that helps.
Thank you all!
nalto 2/1/12 $11,000 (1/5/12 $10,000)

I'd max those types of things first, and then, yeah, I think you should look into investing some in taxable accounts. You're not going to get much for a savings account or CD these days. Vanguard and the firms like it have some nice options for getting started with investments on your own.

HappyCat - Here comes a Karma for meeting your EF goal - and even a month earlier than you had planned! Tobinikui - How's the new job? And how are you surviving that inbetween time between paychecks? I know it can be a stressful wait. Hang in there. Mak - Don't worry about a smaller-than-normal update this month, we know you'll be back at it as soon as you can. Sealy - Girl, give yourself credit for spending your savings! It's sad to see your puppy have to go backwards when you spent your savings on what you had saved it for in the first place. Pointy - I was looking at your table - are you not taking a vacation in 2012? I see 2011 and 2013, but... ? SaverBee - At 8.33% I see you're right on track to make it to your incredible goal by year's end. I'm going to be bustin my beehind to keep up with you throughout the year. BabyBear - I can 'hear' the excitement in your 'voice'! That WAS a huge jump for you. Great job! fresh - I knew you had recently won your race but I didn't realize how much and how fast!! You have been working your tail off for these past 4 years! Even more to add to why I admire you. FemaleSam - You have an impressive set of goals planned! Is this a goal you plan to accomplish in 2012, or longer term? RockyMtnSaver - Payday!! Do you realize that you're already at 29% of your goal? Woohoo!! The Home - How much longer until DH is coming home? MommyC - Welcome to the Savers!! I see you're already more than half-way to your goal! Wonderful! Do you have a timeline in mind to meet the remainder of your goal? Or is it the other way, you're going to try to contribute a certain amount per month and where ever you get by year's end is where you're at? Remember, there is no 'right' answer. Rocky, Nalto, and The Home are right when they suggest to focus on your own goals at your own pace. We just want to know how we can support you the best. In fact, Savers, let's set ourselves a little group goal to be to 25% of our own personal goals by the end of March. The math works out like this... each month is 8.33% so now, if you're on track you'll be at or above 8.33%. Then, at the end of February the milestone grows to 16.66% or higher. Even if you're not quite on track right now, challenge yourself. What do you have to lose?

S4N~ Thanks for fixing my update! Big Sarge is coming back sometime in April, or early May. We think. Hopefully. Needs of the Army. So it is totally doable to reach my $20K goal by the time he comes back, especially when our tax refund comes in! (yeah yeah, we get a big tax refund every year. I know that Big Sarge needs to adjust his witholding next year! It was like pulling teeth to get him to sign up for the TSP, so I focus on the small victories ) I am just waiting on him to send me the W-2's so I can get our return filed. I don't know what the hold up is, I even sent him some racy pictures!

Hello everyone!
Wow - having a little boy changed life BIG time and really cuts into the posting-in-various-places time! And with the problems I had with the tables and suck, I just kept putting off getting here again. I'm so thankful to read that we can skip the tables and just post the savings goal!
We met our 2011 goals, which is awesome!
Now, in 2012, we are looking at buying our first house. Our goals are: - full ROTH IRA - car insurance Mercedes and VW - bauspar - car inspections - new house - vacation to the US to finally meet family (YEAH!!!!)
The saving goal is: 25,666.73 We are currently at: 5440.00
I'm going to do my best to stay in better touch!

Saving4Norway - In my ideal world that would be my 2012 savings goal but unless I hit the Lottery there is no way I could realistically save that much in a year. I expect to have to rollover some of the savings goal into 2013 but I wanted to list everything to keep me looking at my overall goals.
FYI- My update is incorrect. I updated to $4,452 with reply 115 on page 4.

FemaleSam - I'm sorry I missed your update. Without a tagline, I bet I just zoomed right by it. If you could start or end your updates with a line that goes like this: FemaleSam 2/5/12 (current date) $7,777(current savings) I sure would appreciate it. I can't guarantee I won't mess it up again, but having a tagline helps me out a ton.

DD's second round of eye testing for her amblyopia is this coming Monday. I'm anticipating the $775 above dropping to $425. After this we will face the cost of lenses. I am hoping the doctor does not recommend prismatic lenses, because they are over $1K.

S4N lol, you have 18% and a rose, so I'll be chasing you for now, I don't mind since it helps me keep my butt in gear heheh MommyC welcome to the group!! ntrick welcome back! nalto in addition to first maxing out your retirement fund options as rocky mentioned, I'd say make sure to get to a 6-8 month emergency fund in cash on hand (maybe in a high yield online savings acct?) and then the difference can go into investments. Everyone has great goals set for this year, don't let the amount of savings or setbacks discourage you from continue the savings race. I the support I get from this group and know that everyone is a winner for participating ;D

Well my car has some issues. Gonna knock my savings (which is currently tied to my EF since I have no savings goals...) down 1k. Ouch. Although, I am super relieved it's there, and I don't have to freak out about it.

Last week, I finally took on the task of obtaining life and liability (a must in Germany) insurance. I am so relieved that I took the time to sort through offers and finally found the right policies for my family. (That´s 2 things down on my must-have-documents-to-do-list and about 6 to go). After paying for a whole year worth of premiums up front, I am going to put away some money every month until the end of the year. That way I´ll have this saved by the time next year´s premium payment comes around. Also, I changed my calculations around. Instead of showing what I already saved in past years, I am going to only show what I plan on saving this year. Therefore I put most of my starting balances to zero. My tag line below will be updated to reflect that change.Account | Starting Balance - 1/31/2012 | Last Balance | Amount Saved | New Balance | % | Goal Amount 2012 | 3-Months EF (EUR 5,000.00) | 00.00 | 00.00 | 150.00 | 150.00 | 16.66% | 900.00 | DS | 83.63 | 83.63 | 50.00 | 133.63 | 19.09% | 700.00 | Ret. Insurance | 663.65 | 663.65 | 23,65 | 686.30 | 68.63% | 1,000.00 | Life Insurance Premium | 00.00 | 00.00 | - | 00.00 | 00.00% | 150.00 | Liability Insurance | 00.00 | 00.00 | - | 00.00 | 00.00% | 60.00 | Total | 747.28 | 747.28 | 223.65 | 969.93 | | 2810.00 |
Here is my tagline: MommyC: 02/09/2012 - EUR 969.93 (01/31/2012 - EUR 747.28)
Updated goals for 2012: 1) Fully Fund 3-Months EF by June 2012 (EUR 5,000.00) - Only EUR 900 to go 2) Save EUR 700.00 for my son´s college education 3) Reach EUR 1,000.00 saved towards retirement 4) Start saving towards 6-Months EF (EUR 10,000.00) 5) Set aside next year´s Life Insurance Premium (EUR 150.00) 6) Set aside next year´s Liability Insurance Premium (EUR 60)

Today, I received an unexpected check in the mail for $87.40 which is a refund for overpayment of a medical bill. This little treasure will go straight to savings with $12.60 of it's closest friends and my Christmas 2012 total will increase by $100.

Update Here is my first update for the year. I'm feeling kind of muddled about money right now. I really want to focus on my debt right now but so many of my savings goals feel like "have-tos" and the others don't seem attainable. Blech. I may be doing some major revisions at some point. Hellooooo, and welcome back, ntrick! I'm glad to see that the use of those darn tables won't keep you away. Way to go, RockyMtnSaver! You're at 31% already! I've given you a Karma for meeting my 25% Challenge! Fresh - I hope you don't reduce your $775 to $425 because that will make it look like you never saved that money. I hope instead that you'll keep the $775 where it is and enter $350 into your "Spent" column. Hey mommyc - I didn't realize that you are in Germany, so is ntrick. If you'd like to change your calculations, feel free. It won't affect how I track you. What you're considering is the same method I use and it works well for me. I saw your updated goals, fabulous, have you thought about an order or priority? Just curious. HappyCat - Isn't surprise money awesome!? Let me know when you have deposited it into your savings account so I can reward your discipline with some Karma. Laramik - Thank you for the thank you! It's my pleasure to track peoples' successes if it helps them reach their goals. As for you, my friend... you say you feel a bit muddled in your savings aspirations? One possibility I might suggest is to group all your 2012 goals together on your table. For example, your top categories could be Car Insurance - May 2012, Visit Sons 2012, Fair 2012, Dealer Meeting 2012, Vacation 2012, etc. Then, group together your 2013 goals, and so on. Perhaps that by sub-dividing them by year they might feel a little bit more attainable. It goes along with that saying... How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

dvm07 update 2/12/12 $1266.58 (1/1/12=$0 Goal=$5,900)The big increase for this month is just a fluke, not something that is going to happen again, mostly it is due to transfering money around and how I was accounting for it not actually saving more! But at least on paper it should look like I met my goals for the year Fund | Goals | Saved YTD | Spent | % Met | General Savings | $1,800 | $582.08 | | 32.3% | Car Needs | $300 | $40.63 | | 13.5% | Travel | $1,500 | $400.12 | | 26.7% | Presents | $150 | $32.36 | | 21.6% | Taxes | $1,150 | $211.39 | | 18.4% | Roth IRA | $1,000 | $0.00 | | 0.0% | Total | $5,900 | $1,266.58 | | 21.5% |

HappyCat: $1,310 2-13-12 (Start: $165.32/Goal: $2,750) This update reflects a $250 increase since the last update. This is made up of the $150 bi-weekly auto deposit, the refund check and a little extra to make the numbers even.

FemaleSam - Thanks! I'm usually jazzed up for the new year and am able to save my maximum monthly amount until about May or June. As the summer progresses I get a little weaker in my resolve and usually end the year just short of my goal. This year, my total goal is a little lower than in years past so I just might make it this year!
Daphne - THANK YOU!!!! I just hope that my tracking of updates help motivate people to meet their goals. When I first started at the old Savers several years ago I was ridiculously motivated by the smilies and roses. (And still am!) When the updater gal couldn't do it any more I volunteered and have been at it for... 3 years now, I think. I hope it helps!

Norway
Thanks so much for your input! I really love that idea. I may take it one step further and hack off any goals that aren't for this year. Then, when my '12 goals are reached, I can focus on my debt. Wahoo!
