I thought I was doing pretty well with my food budget. Should I make an effort to spend less if there's not a compelling budgetary reason for me to? Edited for brevity. ] nevermind the food budget, why on earth do you want to be with someone who belittles your choices? Exactly what I was thinking.

There's no doubt about it - the cost of food has increase and with gas prices going up, they are likely to go up even further.

Thirded but I would wonder too if it is just his way of getting out of paying for his share of the bill?

I would love to get into making my own bread! I'm currently obsessed with making this dutch oven bread: themerlinmenu.blogspot.com/2010/10/dutch-oven-bread.htmlseriously... it's so flexible and you can add tons of things to it. plus it is SO easy! it makes AMAZING toast and grilled sandwiches.

He used the words, "wasteful and extravagant" to describe how I shop/cook. He's been eating at my house mostly since I bought it a month ago
My response to his snotty attitude would be "Well if I get rid of you my costs would go down considerably since I'll be shopping for just myself again".

Food inflation is out of control. You will have to do as I have and start switching out the most expensive ingredients for more grains and beans. A meat supplier told me that meat is going up 6%. this is one serious challenge i'm trying to take on. DH is a meat lover for sure... so i'm trying so hard to supplement other sources of protein and cheaper ingredients to make him not miss the meat. I'm working hard to master quinoa in order to fill the bill at least once a week I used to make keilbossa (essentially a big sausage) with one whole package of meat (used to be 2.50 a package) and 5 small potatoes and maybe half a bag of carrots all cut up into pieces and baked in the oven... now we take the same amount of meat (bought in bulk at costco since single packages are 4.99 now and i can get a package of 4 at costco for $10 bucks) and add the entire bag of carrots and an entire bag of potatoes. This modification will generally give us 2-3 dinner for 2 people instead of dinner for 2 people and lunch for 1. The other day the hubby commented about how there wasn;t much meat in it the second night we ate the leftovers (I guess we picked too much meat off it the first night) but he laughed when i told him that meal was on a budget. We have been batch cooking more and more to save time and money since he doesn't mind leftovers. I'm just bummed we are almost out of ground beef. We bought our last stash at $1.89 a lb because it was marked down (we just put the little 1 lb packages in the freezer)-- but it 97% lean... Can't find a decent deal the last month or so.... looks like we may have to bite the bullet on that one and just get regular 80/20 for 2.49 lb and fresh and easy.

Dividend, I have an extravagant food budget $800/month for two people (includes household items). You, on the other hand, have a very reasonable food budget. You have decided that food is a priority to you (which I respect) and have structured your life and budget accordingly.
It seems like your BF doesn't share your values about food (which is okay), but it also seems like he isn't willing to respect your values (which is not).
Perhaps he doesn't know that you have made food a priority in your life. Why don't you talk to him about it. If he continues to judge your values, I would go shopping for a new BF.
