According to Turbo Tax, Im getting the max refund guarantee. Do you guys recommend a place like HR Block instead? Archie's advice is excellent. I've told people many times, that you do need some tax knowledge to use Turbo tax. If you answer a question incorrectly, you will not get the correct result. One question I would have for you: Where it asks if the child lived with you all year, did you answer yes? That is the correct answer for a child born during the year. What if the question is: "Number of months lived with you in U.S. in 2010?" He was born in December

never mind - I looked it up
"Death or birth of child. A child who was born or died during the year is treated as having lived with you all year if your home was the child's home the entire time he or she was alive during the year. The same is true if the child lived with you all year except for any required hospital stay following birth. "
WOOHOO! Thanks for the tip. I was wondering why our return was fairly small (using TaxAct) -- I was going by the actual time LO lived with us -- one month.

Born in December is the same as living with you all year. Glad that helped you out.

Born in December is the same as living with you all year. Glad that helped you out. This... as long as the child was born before 11:59 PM on December 31, 2010

To be born in December 2010, the child would have to be born before 12:00 AM, January 1, 2011.

That and the dependency exemption. We just got married and had our son in 2010... plus a stepson in the family. This is the most complicated my return has ever been.

You have two choices for filing if you were married on December 31, 2010--married filing jointly (chosen by most) or married filing separately. In some states, what you choose for the federal return is what you are for your state return.
As for the stepson, where does he live and is there an agreement as to who claims him?

Stepson live full time with us, and hubby has custody. Bio mom is out of picture.

I think all your questions have been taken care of through PM. Is that correct?
