I mentioned that to Pom, she thinks it happens when we change that little icon for a thread. I checked a few--I think she's right. Weird...

Hey! I heard that!! Yeah, Virgil said that the IE program that was originally created is all messed up and that when he added those scripts things went all wonky. He's fixing it but it's very time consuming. Doesn't he, and the others just rock for making all these things so much fun? I wuv them.

I totally agree with you POM...the MODS here have been great, and we would not all be able to keep enjoying one another's company if moonbeam hadn't taken initiative to set us up here!

Yes. I don't speak French, but I know some sayings. It means adding something special - so to speak. I think.

The same thing happened to me when I was viewing the icons used as thread markers. After it happens, you have to click on the 'keyboard' picture in the lower right icon tray of your monitor (near the clock) and switch back to US language.

SL - How do I put icons as markers to my thread? I was trying to do that, but I can't figure it out. Go figure.

POM: When you're starting a new thread, there's the subject line, then an attachment line, then the Message Icon line - you click on the drop-down screen on that line to choose which marker you want to use for your thread.

I know the area you are talking about, but I don't have a keyboard icon there.

SL - Ummm, we need pictures. See, I can do it within my post (see "sad") but not on my actual thread itself.

Go back and modify your original post in a thread you started, you can change it there. It works for the individual post. I was wanting to mark my thread! I can't get it to work. (see my broken heart?)

Yes, I can see your broken heart. You CAN put the icon on a thread you start by going to your first post in a thread YOU started, click the modify button, and add the message icon. That is what I did with this thread!

Sorry about the accents. Description of Problem: Little accents (called "diacritics") are appearing on the home page listing, and when I view my posting history. What up with dat? Analysis: This is a known bug. From a programmer's perspective, ProBoards has two huge flaws: 1) the ProBoards API provides absolutely no way to attach metainformation to threads or posts, and 2) thread title lengths are restrictive (60 characters).
Because ProBoards only supports 12 (boring) default thread icons, the selection of an additional icon must be passed as metainformation. Because ProBoards does not support metainformation, it must be "stuffed" into the subject line. Normally this is not a problem, as a programmer could simply append a unique marker (such as "&^16^&") to the end of a subject line to encode icon ID 16, etc.
This is what ProBoards programmers of old attempted to do. The problem: "&^16^&" takes up 6 of the 60 available subject line characters. When combined with the "Re: ", 9 of 60 characters are used up. This means that if a thread subject is longer than 51 characters (and many are), the encoding has to truncate the thread subject (not good).
Enter Virgil's (brilliant) solution: attach diacritics to the vowels in the subject line. The unique pattern of diacritics can encode an integer (such as 16), which can then be parsed out when the subject line is read. This type of encoding has two main advantages: 1) it reserves only one character, and 2) if, for whatever reason, a subject line isn't properly decoded, the only side effect is some little accents. Known Problems: The decoder doesn't handle the subject lines on the main page or in the personal posting history page. I will fix this shortly. Also, if a subject line does not have sufficiently many vowels (typically 2 or 3), the thread cannot use certain icons. The correct (but admittedly rather ludicrous) solution to this problem is to add additional vowels to the subject line. 'Y's do not count as vowels.
Also, you may ask: what happens if I want to put actual diacritics in the subject line?
The answer: you can, but if you do, your thread cannot have a special icon (icons 'Money' and down). Bug report completed.

So do we just throw in an extra "e-i-e-i-o" into the subject line? Will this be a permanent "feature"?

I don't think I'm making sense. Cheesy when you click on Everything Else there are a list of our threads. You will see one from Chocolate Lover that has a smiley Face next to her thread name. That's what I was trying to do. Put an icon THERE and not within the thread. When I clicked on Everything Else and checked your thread - there is no icon there. Only within the thread. I figured that part out, but not how to add it next to the actual thread name.
i.e. My social thread I would like a martini glass. I can't get it to show there, but it did show within my actual thread - just not near the name of the thread where the threads are listed.
Did that make any sense?

If you want to use the extended icons and your subject line has fewer than three vowels in it, you may need to add an extra vowel. If you find that cumbersome, you are certainly welcome not to use the extended icons. It is a martini glass. (I assume you're talking about the "What is your Favorite Social Activity" thread.) If you can't see the martini glass when you're viewing the list of threads on the board, please let me know what operating system, browser, and browser version you're using.
