Heck yeah I knit! ;D I'm not super great yet, but am becoming adept at several techniques and have a lot of scarves, shawls and fingerless gloves to show for it. Glad someone pointed you to Ravelry - great site. Also check out www.knittinghelp.com - she has how-to videos which are close ups of her hands slowly doing the different stitches (VERY helpful) as well as a glossary. If you are learning to knit, knittinghelp.com is a MUST.

They'll be glad to have you! Honestly it's much nicer to be one of the few newbies in a group - the more experienced people will have time to help you with your project. I'm the youngest one in our knitting group by far so I'm kind of their pet. It's been a blast for me because they are mostly older women with lots of different experiences and backgrounds - it's pretty fascinating to talk with them. I love knitpicks! They have the cutest kits - I bought two to make Christmas ornaments with. Anne, today I went into the yarn boutique up the road from our place. There were several women sitting around knitting, which was charming. They all seemed much older than me, but were plenty friendly. I had my kid in tow, so I wasn't able to sit down and join them. Instead, I checked out some yarn--very, very beautiful stuff in this shop...cashmere, mohair, lots of organic and fair trade stuff...most of it much more expensive than Michael's or JoAnn's--and bought a $17 crochet hook.

Be careful about yarn - I've become a yarn hoarder :/ before you know it you'll have a huge stash of yarn you'll likely never use, and not want to horrify yourself by adding up what you spent on it. Yeah, I can see that happening to me. The day I bought my first knitting needles--before I even new "purl" was spelled P U R L--I also bought several skeins of soft and pretty yarn. And today I saw some GORGEOUS yarns (like, up to $20 for a tiny about...not even a regular skein size). Oh, and I found these gorgeous vintage knitting needles on eBay. Just over $20/pair. They're sooooo pretty. I really want to buy them, but I think I might feel like a poser if I bought souch nice needles but could only do three stitches...

I first learned to knit (and crochet) as a child. Later, as an adult, I wanted to learn how to read and follow knitting (and crocheting) patterns, so got a book and taught myself. I still enjoy knitting, but I don't take on big projects anymore. I have knitted sweaters in the past, but I don't enjoy the assembly part. I've also really enjoyed crocheting Barbie clothing for my DGD when she was younger. Right now, I'm knitting my dog a sweater LOL. I like to knit while watching TV because it helps me avoid snacking.

No such thing as a poser with only 3 stitches! Buy them! They would be cool to have and it might make you want to learn more. There are a lot of things you can do with only 3 different stitches!

I'm glad you found the people in the yarn shop to be friendly. It's too bad that they carry such nice yarn, lol! I get entranced by the colors and textures and some of those prices are ridiculous!

Hey all you knitters and crocheters: Special Olympics is still in need of scarves. Each state has different deadlines and there is still plenty of time to get them in. I forgot who was the scarf knitter but this might be up your alley!! www.scarvesforspecialolympics.org/states

speechchick71, I did not know about the Special Olympics needing scarves. Thanks for that link. I'm going to get going - I'm sure I can get several completed in time. And for 2012, I'll start earlier.

I sent in my two scarves for the Special Olympics and have so much yarn left over in those colors that I can probably get another two scarves done in the next few weeks. Already started on scarf #3.

I knit. At the moment I am knitting fingerless gloves and knitted headbands with cutesy buttons in the back to fasten (for warmth in the cold weather). I have knitted several pairs of socks. Love socks. dancinmama: didn't know you were on this thread also!!! We are grocery hounds!!!

Well, it is Brentwood, after all. Everything is uber expensive and nice here (as in, too nice and expensive for us poor folk).

cleanslate, Wondering how your first knitting class went? After reading this thread, I just finished crocheting a scarf for the Special Olympics. I'm going to start knitting another one today. I love the colors!

For new knitters, treat yourself and buy the bamboo needles. They are so much better than the metal. The yard will just glide off of them but not "slip off". They are somewhat more expensive but so worth it. I like to knit when I watch my reality shows (I'm a junkie) and then I don't feel like I am wasting my time!! Hey, whatever works, right?

I am a new knitter, and I second the bamboo needles. I love them so much more than the metal. I wish I could find a class around here, the closest thing I have is a friend trying to teach me while our children destroy the house around us. Not so relaxing.

I like to crochet and cross-stitch. I've tried picking up knitting, but it's harder (or I don't know how) to fix dropped stitches and I hate having stuff with holes in them Last year on maternity leave, I finished 4 small, postcard size cross-stitch projects for friends and family, two wedding announcements and two birth announcements. When DD went down for a nap, I would sit at my computer and turn on netfix or listen to an audio book and cross-stitch away.

I was given a complete set of bamboo needles. They felt a bit "strange" at first, but I've come to love them.
You can use a crochet hook to pick up dropped stitches (but with the bamboo needles, I have fewer dropped stitches)

I don't knit, but I embroider. I haven't done it for a very long time, but it saved my sanity during / after my divorce.

I learned how to knit from my mother when I was very young and promptly forgot about it until I was in college. Harry Potter was all the rage and I decided to knit a scarf in my preferred house colors which my suite mate saw and decided they wanted to do also. So, I ended up teaching all of my suite mates how to knit including one of their boyfriends. There is a local group here on the island and I have always wanted to go but choir is at exaclty the same time. Well my choir leader had to leave this Christmas so I finally got to join the knitting group. I just finished my first cable/hat project and it turned out great. I got the pattern of ravelry that site called star crossed slouchy beret. Knitting just makes sense to me its just loops put through loops.
