I would say clothes, but I get a lot of pleasure from the hunt, and then knowing it's hanging in my closet. I eventually donate it, but I derive enough happiness out of the transaction. At least that's how I rationalize it. Nothing immediately jumps out as a complete and true waste.

A couple of dresses that I love but have never worn because we don't go any where that needs to be dressed up.

Tractors, and trips to Disney World. That's quite a combo. I know, pretty sad. But I must follow what I enjoy. I love rusty machinery, and can't seem to stay away from the mouse.

People said I was stupid for buying a 2011 Kia Optima EX with a lot of bells and whistles. Made me a little disgruntled at first, like,"now what have I done?" Well, no longer. One of the best and most enjoyable driving cars I have owned in the last 65 years. A surprise, and the price was right. Yes, it is a Korean label, but the factories they have built to product cars in the U.S. will help put people to work, so "buy an American make" (Ford/Chevy/or..?) was not the deciding factor for me. Please do not call me a stupid idiot, too satisfied to feel insulted.

All of my big purchases I'm happy with. It's the little stuff that I consider wasted cash...and it adds up:
Clothes that are on sale but that I don't love--I rarely wear them Household/kitchen stuff that I end up not using DVDs Lunch at restaurants where the food is inferior to what I could've made myself

Renting two places at once. Buying a dehydrator, thinking I'd use it a lot.

After working on cleaning out my garage of "stuff", I would say I spent lots of foolish money on do-dads and thingamajigs. Hopefully, I will finish with the giving away by summer. Stay out of malls and stores and save lots of money now. I can't wait for an uncluttered life!

two biggies that come to mind were at a time when I totally hated my job (I've had some highs and lows, but mainly lows) was for 3 combo snack/drink vending machines with ex #1. I was trying to find something I could do to make a living and give up my job. Real kicker ? Ex was "not happy" and announced that to me about 2-3 weeks AFTER we took out an $18-$19K loan to purchase said machines . Couldn't have said something before that, and for what it's worth - he was just as excited about them as I was, so never saw that one coming. Hindsight, I should have tried to cancel the machines, but they don't look very highly on that and we really didn't have the cash to pay any sort of penalty. A few years later, I think one was abandoned in place, don't know what ever happened to it, and I believe he had taken 2 and put them in a storage unit that went up for auction for non-payment. We were divorced for a few years by that time, so I didn't have much say so in the matter. To add insult to injury, we had to have rather expensive insurance on them for all sorts of things, to include injury to someone in case they did something stupid and got an arm caught in it or pulled it over on top of themselves. And second, paid a few hundred dollars for the medical transcription scam, still hating the job. What a waste, but not nearly as costly as the vending machines.

I don't know if this counts, but yesterday morning DH went out to warm up the car, which I'd left in gear when I parked... went to get out, popped the clutch, and drove straight into the garage door. There is now about a 6" V-shaped gap at the bottom that is probably not fixable. So there went $700 down the drain in less than 5 seconds! At least I have something to tease him about for a few years

Bras that look good when you try them on in the store, but end up not quite fitting right later on.
Stockings that spring a run the first time you ever wear them.
"'I'm a moron' Fees" of any kind: paying a bill one day late, parking tickets, library book fines...

Ordering books online that the post office swallows Just re-ordered one (originally ordered Dec 8, due to arrive by Dec 28) that never showed up; this time I went with expedited shipping--to my work address, which has a different distribution center. Another one (identical order dates), the online vendor ordered a replacement copy to be shipped to me...but wouldn't give me a tracking number or change the address. I can't decide what to do about the first order--whether to contact the shipper or not. I know damn well it's not the shipper's fault (had this problem with 3-4 different online vendors) and hate to punish them...but I don't much like dropping $20 on a book (foreign language, not easily obtainable at the neighborhood Barnes & Noble) that I have to turn around and re-order either.

tons of little things that would add up to big money if I had ever kept track.
clothes - especially things I bought but never wore and then end up selling or giving away a few years later.
fast food.
frozen food that I'd buy on impulse; never make and then throw out when it reached it's expired date.
late fees for just stupidly forgetting when my bills were due to be paid.
exercise equip that I'd use for a while and then sell at a yard sale for peanuts when I got bored with it.

Storage units. All that was in there was crap - old files, speakers and furniture that could have been donated it was in such great condition. I/we just didn't want it anymore. $4,000 later I put my foot down and gave everything away, shredded the files and put the fear of God in DH to stop being a hoarder. It's working, so far. Never under-estimate the power of bitching.
