DGM- Surgery was postponed. Surgeon said it is too risky. She has a fever and her blood sugar is too high- which they can't figure out because they can only give her minute doses of insulin since they can only give her IV fluids since she can not sit up. Her cardiologist ripped into the staff this morning about her respirations getting so low and ordered a higher dose of a different painkiller that she has taken successfully without respiratory issues. He got even angrier when he saw the ER nurse's notes about her respirations and that "family and staff" were concerned. My uncle M has been shut up for now. My aunt plainly told him that there is nothing he can do about the DNR order. It was signed years ago- before my grandfather died.
Everyone seems to be on the same page right now at least. It's unusual- but it helps. My brother has yet to find a new vehicle. Mom needs to give him an ultimatum.

QOTW -- Most of the shopping is done in November/December. Since I have a small list and several are of the gift card type there is not a lot of stress. Many of my female family/friends will get a moneysquirrel original jewelry set. Whenever I can I do try to find meaningful gifts throughout the year to avoid the gift card idea.
COTW-- I try to set aside a set amount of money each month for gifts/Christmas. This will take care of birthdays, weddings, baby gifts as well as Christmas.

Just realized that I did not actually set a goal for November. It's was a spendy first part of the month but I'm going to try to get things under control. GOAL: 12 CS
Everyone should visit mrslynch's website - a) she is very cool, b) she is always informative and/or thought provoking and c) you might win the really great cookbook prize!
For those of you who are Facebook friends - I have pictures up of the weekend antics with R2B2. It was a great time - went to a local fish place for dinner one night, took her to the zoo and to Churchill Downs, then had brunch an eclectic, fun restaurant the day she left.

I am going to do my first Christmas bazaar! YAY! I can't wait! I will see how I do. More to get my name out there- but if I can get my name out, that will really help. When Home Interior switched to Celebrating Home, some people stayed with it and others retired or didn't stay. There are very few people in my town that do it.
Hoping they can do DGMs surgery today. They took her leg out of traction yesterday when they thought they were going to do the surgery and the surgeon thought putting it back in would just be too painful (possibly for him).

mizbear: Have fun at the Xmas bazaar! Sounds like fun to me! Hope all goes well with DGM. Sometimes I wonder what they are doing in the hospitals! When my mom was in I feared leaving since she couldn't breath and they were doing very little to help her in the ER. I had to help her to the bathroom for crying out loud! When I left I called my dad and he went to watch over her in his police sargent uniform LOL. They thought I had called the cops on them. Serves them right!

Mizbear- fingers crossed that they do the surgery and that everything goes ok. Scary, stressful times for you. So bossman decided that yes I can have tomorrow off The Boy even said he'd hang with me for a while in the morning. Me thinks he is just sucking up because a PC game he has on pre-order comes out tomorrow and he needs a ride to the store.

Hey ladies. I'm still here. I got sick Oct. 28th and had fever and chills off and on for almost a week (though I managed to be feeling okay for our Halloween party). At one point my temp was 104.4. Fun! Feeling mostly better now, just a sore throat and some fatigue. Doctor has no idea what it was. Glad to be back amongst the living, although I had a hectic few days this week trying to get all my homework and my copyediting project done on time, but I did it!! Still not sure how...
shanen- yes technically I am still doing WIRR. I did a bunch of balance transfers so I need to redo my spreadsheet. I'll try to update by the end of the month.
honey - glad you didn't have horrific power outages. My parents were without for almost a week. Luckily they have a fireplace and gas stove so they could still cook and stay warm.
mitten - glad DF's job is working out!
We got our new bay window put in on Tuesday. It's gorgeous. We have to stain it this weekend. I'm excited to have a place to decorate for holidays in that room now. And now I'm not paranoid about the cats ripping down the screens and escaping (they got really good at pulling the screens out) because now the screens are OUTSIDE. Now, to pay off the CC before the 0% expires...
QOTW: If I have an idea I'll buy something, but I generally do it around now. Not necessarily Black Friday though - too much insanity for me. And lately I've been doing a lot of gift certificates for experiences rather than physical gifts, which seem to go over well. SIL and BIL and the kiddies are finally doing their family photo shoot with our wedding photographer this weekend, that we got them last year. So psyched to see how they come out! Absolutely love our photog. My kids are going to be photographed by her from newborns, methinks.
COTW: it's coming out of our Nov28th paychecks! I'm pretty psyched that blue_wagon's family is changing things up. Two years ago all the cousins got each other gifts (and it's a LOT of cousins). Last year we did secret santa. And this year we're doing "hugs and I love you"s which is very free. Still going to bake for his aunts and uncles, but this will save lots of moola.
miz - hoping for the best for DGM
Looking forward to chilling tonight and watching the new Bones. I don't know WHY I thought taking classes Monday and Tuesday, and then doing both Pilates and zumba on Wednesdays, was a good idea. Only a few more weeks and I'll be done with school and have my Professional Publishing Certificate from NYU!

I know paying a debt via garnishment isn't supposed to be a painless process, but I'm starting to wonder if maybe it's a little too heartless. I could use some good thoughts on the financial front. So I paid off my student loans out of my last paycheck, right? I've been keeping careful track of where I was at, reconciling my payments to the monthly statements I get from the department of education, the whole 9 yards. Since I'm in charge of payroll for my store, I always get a sneek peek at my check when I verify the payroll the day before checks are distributed. So yesterday, I eagerly looked at my pay info to see what kind of effect the payoff has on my check only to find that they still deducted the full amount from my check. After a flurry of phone calls yesterday and this morning, I found out that the Department of Education is moving all of their data from one software to another and so they're almost 8 WEEKS behind in posting payments to accounts. The money has been received, but it's not reflecting in their system. On top of that, they sent my employer an "update" sometime in the last couple of months that has my employer thinking I still owe $1,400. I wanted to when I heard that. The good news is that while the Dept. of Ed. sorts out their record-keeping mess, my account is also being monitored by a 3rd party contractor who has accurate records and does show that my account is paid off. They're even willing to step in and stop the garnishment before my next check if the Dept. of Ed. doesn't get it's act together in time. And the $130 they took out of today's pay? I get to wait 6-8 weeks (or maybe longer, depending on how long it takes them to figure out they made a mistake) to get the money back. If that doesn't sound like a devastating amount of money, consider that that amount would pay for my gas and groceries for a month. Or it would pay for all but 2 of the Christmas presents I'm doing this year. Apartment situation: MK asked me for an update on this, so here it is. I received the copies of the money orders, and as the agent I spoke to in September said, the signatures of the person cashing them was unreadable. So I'm out the money. The apartment manager hasn't stepped out of line since then. Basically I can't afford to move. So I'm keeping my head down and focusing on staying the course so that I can move in a few months.

reenee: Where did they cash them? Did they get cash or go into an account. Doesn't everyone who cashes a check need to put it in an account or show id? Sounds very fishy to me. Glad the apt manager hasn't stepped out of line.
So took DS#2 to the dentist. While I haven't done so in 2 years I have been diligent about brushing his teeth. Well he DOES have cavities and will need to be put under to deal with them. He may even need crowns. Oh what fun! Another couple of appts etc to have in a stressful life! People there is a reason I drink and am overweight. And no I am not an alcoholic although going through life in a Xanax state doesn't sound half bad....

wow, is there a lot going on around here. holy cow! mizbear--good thought for you dgm. renee--i'm sorry to hear about the loan situation and the apartment situation. you are a strong, strong woman to be handling it this well. smokey--glad you had a good time with r2b2. and here's the link to the giveaway that you mentioned: wp.me/p1Slkj-aYsheila--enjoy your day off! i don't have to go to my f/t job but i still have to work p/t teaching and blogging. mostly good stuff, though, right? red--congrats on almost being done! what a great feeling that must be! as for me? i'm at 6/25 controlled spends. not too bad. not too good, either. but at least i'm paying attention this month which is better than months prior. i'm trying to remain optimistic right now despite the financial difficulties of several people i care about. it's hard to watch people you know work their asses off struggle to pay their bills. i wish there was something i could do for all of them except listen but i know there isn't.

Dakota: you asked about DS and his Model UN. I was wrong- he is doing Model Assembly not Model UN. Model Assembly is a state government thing. They have governors, Lt governors, state senators, lobbyists, supreme court, etc. It's all based on the state government not a global thing. Sorry- Stephen just explained all of that to me this afternoon.

GOOD NEWS!
DGM made it through her surgery ok. She will remain at the hospital for up to a week then go to the nursing home for approx 3-6 months of rehab. At that time it will be decided if she can come back home. She was told before the surgery she MUST be able to walk assisted or unassisted on the repaired hip in order to return home.
Thank you everyone.

update; 6/20 NSD, 3/7 CSD, 1 EOD. Just found out that the "kitten" is at least 5 years old and has already been spayed. I will just be charged for an exploratory because of where the first scar was. They didn't think she was spayed but couldn't figure out what the scar was from. She is awful small for a 5 year old but that is what the older vet said she was. Anyway she will be home tomorrow and I will not have to worry about her getting preggers, but because she is an outdoor cat, just worry about her getting hit. She doesn't go on the road just to the cornfield, but there is always that chance.

Good afternoon everyone. Update: 9 / 25 NEO 10 / 20 NSD/CSD sapphire - Sorry to hear about your migraine. I get them a few times a year and they are NO fun. Though mine are completely disabilitating and I cannot do anything. mittenkitten - Purchasing clothing so that you don't get arrested for being lewd in public is definitely a necessary spend. mizbear - I am so sorry to hear about your grandmother's fall and injuries. I am glad that your uncle has been quieted for the moment. ETA: Thanks for the good news update on your grandmother. And best of luck with the bazaar! muttley - I feel for your husband in his situation at church. Those issues tend to be much more emotionally charged than in other workplaces. redwagon - Glad to feel you are feeling better. reenee - How frustrating regarding the student loan. I used to run into a similar problem with employees who were paying child support - it seemed to take FOREVER to get a state or federal agency to cease collecting once a garnishment is in place. Hang in there. 3cats - Glad to hear the cat is not going to be producing more wild cats. You have such a sweet loving heart to care for her as you have. COTW: I am one of those that "shops" year round for Christmas and birthdays. When I run across something either at a store, bazaar, estate sale etc. that I think a specific person would like I snap it up then. I have a large plastic tub in the extra closet in my guest room where these items all go until the occasion comes up. These items are in addition to the various things I make to use as part of my holiday gift giving. Having looked at hard numbers a few years ago I find that my per person spending is low and I don't ever again want to be one of those who dread receiving their January bills. QOTW: I am going to be looking at some real figures next week to account for shipping items to my former students (NOT including this year's kids or their family of course). As my family and friends know about my situation no one is expecting anything extravagant from me this year. I am again aware of how glad I am that this year's students are no longer living here. It is better for me emotionally and mentally to not have to deal with them while trying to deal with looking for a new job. For those who want to know more about what I have been up to the last week I wrote a rather lengthy post which can be found here: honeylioness.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=thoughts&thread=240&page=1Okay ... off to make something for dinner. Getting SO excited to meet up with startsmart this weekend!!!

honey - I've been where you are - you are doing all the right things. It sounds like you left them in a good shape which I know was important to you. thinking good thoughts for you and if you ever need more places to clean - my place is available (heck I'll fly you from Boston and put you up in a nice hotel!)
3cats-you are so sweet for taking such good care of the little cat
mizbear - glad dgm came through ok - my FIL had that surgery in 2010 - it is a tough recovery - it's good she'll be in a nursing home, good luck at bazaar
mk - yikes on DS2 teeth issue - poor kid & poor you!
ses - good luck finishing the paperwork this weekend for the LTC! ;D
renee - that really sucks, i'm glad they can stop the next one though; will you move before you start school though

Update: 9/30 NSD/CSD; Used 3/30 restaurant points
The big cook we did has been fantastic this week - we have not eaten out at all! Now that fall/winter is here I like cooking more (apartment doesn't overheat - so hopefully we'll keep this up! If we make the one thing I put off doing (ran out of energy) we'll have enough variety for a week w/o repeats and enough food till our party on the 11th of December.
So I spent one day out of budget/planned spending - I've been wanting a bag from my favorite designer line and had my eye on 2 different ones. Both of which are outside my self imposed limit (because even a handbag junkie like me has limits). And then there was a flash sale at RueLaLa and they had the bag I wanted last year but didn't buy because it was over my limit. And the sale had it for about 40% of the original price. So while a bag was on the overall big picture budget for 2011/2012 - it totally was not for this week/month - so I called it a spend.
QOTW: When do you shop for the holidays? Do you shop all year or do you wait until Black Friday?
I try to do all my shopping BEFORE Thanksgiving - but the bulk is October/November.
COTW: Make sure you have a budget/savings for the upcoming holiday season. If not start planning for next year now.
We have been spoiled because my DH's profit sharing check hits the 3rd week of November and we use that to fund most of the shopping. So we don't save ahead time although we will start buying gifts before the check but out of free cash flow after bills/savings. Next year he should retiring/freelancing - which means no profit sharing - which means I need to add another sub-savings account to ING. Thanks for the tweak!

MK - The payments in question were made with money orders... the kind you buy at grocery or convenience stores. If the money order has not been cashed when you discover it lost or stolen, you can request a stop payment and get the money order replaced. However, if it has been cashed there's nothing they can do. Regardless of who cashed it. And I'm still liable for the rent that's "missing". IF I could prove that it was signed by one of the employees of the apartment complex but not applied to my rent, I might be able to recoup the money. BUT I'd have to take them to small claims court to do so, a proposition I have neither the time nor the money to undertake.
The lesson here, for all of us - treat money orders like cash, don't use them unless you're handing it to the company in person and get a receipt for the payment. If you have to mail a payment or drop it in a drop box (and don't have a checking account) spend the extra $5-10 and get a cashier's check from your bank or credit union.
Honey - In my situation, it should have been an easy thing. My employer was tracking the balance all along and should have stopped payments as soon as the balance was paid in full. The problem seems to be in this incorrect "update" they were sent. I'm trying to get more information from payroll on that.
Spruby - Yes, I do plan to move before I begin college. I may push it back a little and start in Summer term doing self directed classes while I train my replacement at work. I got to thinking about the list of things I really need to do/replace/buy and it just gets longer by the day. I don't want to end up in school but so broke I can't replace my car if/when it dies. On the other hand, I don't want to get complacent about my income and put off going back to school indefinitely.

I have been working on the chili for the chili cook off Saturday since yesterday- I like for it to sit at least overnite before serving. Plus that way if it is too spicy I have time to fix it. I want to win again. Very therapeutic.
I have already made the decision that next year I am switching to to gift cards of a set amount for Christmas. The girls are getting older - ZBear is playing clarinet and although she still plays with some toys, they don't last long. She goes through clothes like water. TBear is a gamer and is into goth. She also like to read and is into anime. If money was no object, I would buy her something akin to a kindle and load a ton of books on it that she would like- then I found out that e-readers don't support anime. She reads regular stuff too, but I'm not buying her an e-reader if it doesn't support both types of books. I thought about buying myself an e-reader- but I am waiting for them to come out with something designed for people with vision impairments. I have been talking with a guy friend of mine who is blind about that.

miz - glad to hear the surgery went well!
start - glad you had such a great day!
I feel like today is going to be really long and miserable. I still feel somewhat under the weather and really struggled to get myself in to work today. Would much rather be home in bed sleeping more lol. But at least it is Friday. When does happy hour start? Wish I had some Bailey's to slip into my coffee...
stupid question cause I'm pretty sure the answer is no, but does Apple ever do sales? Like, is it worth waiting until black friday to get blue's iPad2? I know they regulate their prices very much so I can't expect Best buy to do a sale on their own, it has to come from Apple.

mizbear: Glad surgery went well!
red: while they can't put them on sale more and more stores are offering additional items with the Apple products or gift cards. Target just had a great deal on them where they gave away a gift card for around $50 they gave something else with it but I am not sure what it was. I know of a few people that purchased them then.

Yesterday was... less than awesome. It was my day off, but I spent the day resetting my computer to factory settings and re-installing my software (well, some of it, I still have a bunch of things to re-download). I also spent a good portion of time on the phone trying not to flip out on the nice people trying to help me figure out what the heck was going on with my student loan garnishment situation. By the time I got those two things sorted out, it was dinner time. So I gave up, went out to dinner, went shopping, and drove out to see my sister. Sis has a new puppy, an 8 week old ... um... I forget the breed. The puppy will grow up to be a big dumb black dog like one of the others. Not a lab... or one of the "agressive" breeds. So now Sis has 3 dogs (Oscar, the doxie; Tyson, the big dumb dog; and Kamber, the newest addition) and a cat (VanGough, who is missing most of one of his ears). Kamber seemed to think that licking my new shoes was great fun. That and nipping at my jacket. It was hanging down, right in her line of sight, so I can't say that I blame her. I was really surprised that all 4 of the "kids" came to demand attention say hello when I got there. Usually Van waits for me to come to him. I haven't had a single no spend day yet this month. I did get some good news in my email this morning. I emailed the payroll rep at corporate who handles all the garnishments, letting her know what I had found out about the student loan situation. She's not only going to stop the garnishment out of my next check, but she's also going to hold the payment they just took out and refund it to me directly as soon as she get the release paperwork from the department of education! They'll either add it to my next check (if it's close to time for it) or they'll fedex me a check for the extra (if it's the off week). So at most, a 2 week wait. I'll take that over a possible 8 week wait any time!

Reenee- Glad you got at least SOME good news.
DGM- Not doing very well. SHe had a seizure overnight and is now in a sort of comatose state. When she does open her eyes, she looks through everyone. They have no idea what has caused this.

hello all, quick check in from the lovely honeylioness den here in Boston! While I'm very disappointed I won't be kickin' some exchanged student booty this weekend I am more than a little giddy about hanging with Honey and seeing all the nooks and crannies of her home. The pantry, you guys... oh the pantry...
Anywho, I'm not flying home for a few more days so I'll be working here and getting in plenty of time for site seeing and such.

Stand back. I have a budget, and I know how to use it.

I have been asked on a blind date for Sunday- see my thread in EE for more details. Very nervous.
