My mom's husband got approved on first attempt without a lawyer. Mom is a nurse though. She thinks it was approved bc she listed every doctor visit including those that weren't directly related to the heart condition he was applying based on.

Thanks again to everyone who has replied.
Yes, we're well aware that she won't receive much monthly income from this. As I've mentioned before, Mom is accustomed to living a simple, frugal lifestyle. She owns her home with no mortgage payment, so living on a small amount of money won't be a horrible hardship for her.
We're aware that the upkeep of the property and the house will fall to the rest of the family. We're already in that situation with my Grandmother and the rest of the original homestead property, and we have a workable way of handling that amongst family members. I'm not concerned about her ability to live in her home for as long as possible.

Please realize that SSDI and SSI are two different things. SSI is need based. SSDI is not. My DH was approved for SSDI the first time through, but he had not been working for 2 years and his doctor also has a law degree so he knew how to write things up.

weaselfer - Yes, I'm aware of the difference, but it's a great reminder. Thank you.

Let me tell you from personal experience that she will be denied at first and then you have to appeal. Very rarely do they ever approve someone right away. (I also work for lawyers). You can apply on line and I would do that immediately because it will take at least two years for approval if she is denied. If she is approved in the end she will receive the amount retroactive to 6 months after filing. There is a six month waiting period after applying. Be sure to have all of her doctors information, i.e. phone and address and places and addresses of employment for the online application. Does she get a letter from SS every year telling her what her benefits would be if she retired or was disabled. I used to get one every year prior to my birthday. I did not read every entry or response so this all may have been said already.
The amount you receive is based on past years of reported earnings and how much has been paid in and your age.

Also, SSI and SS disability are two different things. My advice would be to file now even if she is not sure because the time starts then.

It's not true that everyone get denied the first time. Most, but not all. My application went in in the fall and was approved the following spring for SSI and the SSDI was approved a few months later.
For a short time, I got both SSI and SSDI.

I was also approved the first time, but my mother handed them a stack of medical records that could frighten a lawyer.

My mother is a nurse. She documented every doctor's visit, every surgery, every hospitalization her husband had. She thinks that is why her husband was approved the first time. I have a cousin who wasn't approved the first time. I truly think its because her hospital had incomplete records. She had 3 surgeries in 2 days and they had no record of one of them.

I have a woman friend that has fibromyalgia. She is in constant pain she says. Don't know much about it but she applied for social security disability and was turned down. She's appealing it now. I have a cousin who has SAD. Social Anxiety Disorder. She gets nervous around people. Can't work because of it. It is characterized by "intense fear in social and work situations causing considerable distress and impaired ability to function in at least some parts of daily life". She applied and got it right away.
Heck, that's my job every day. I think my woman friend should get it right away. She's worked all her life but to get turned down and my cousin didn't.
Go figure.

rip- When I went for my interview at SSA- my DM went with me- I had such horrible tremors, drooling, and stuttering (on top of my normal stutter)- all side effects of my meds & exacerbated by the situation- I think it gave them a pic of the problem up front. I was also visibly distraught in front of them where they could see it.
Not just the letter from my doctors and employers. I actually got up and moved several times until I finally found a chair in a spot where no one could sit by me except DM. I would much rather be at work. But I don't know from day to day which days I can deal with people and which days I won't be able to go outside. It truly sucks to live that way.
At least the drooling seems to have mainly ceased.
