Hi All, For those who remember from back on the MSN board, I just wanted to let you know that I have finally been scheduled for surgery for the thyroid cancer - January 25th is the big day! My surgeon thinks I'm a very "good candidate" and he doesn't think there should be any difficulties involved. I'm very happy, but very nervous at the same time! Prayers, karma and cash gifts are all welcome! lol jk about the cash gifts.

Good to hear.
Hope everything goes as well for you as it did for me.
I know it will be a relief when the surgery is behind you.

Thanks Bean! So I assume you've had a thyroidectomy as well?? Any tips or pointers you can give me before surgery? That would be very much appreciated!

I have Graves Disease, not cancer, so I don't have a lot of advice, but... When you lose the thyroid you will need to go on some kind of thyroid pill. Stay on top of this!! Make sure when your lab work gets done that they send the results to your doctor. My hospital lab didn't and after two weeks of sitting on it I was so sick from not having enough "juice" that I was throwing up, my hair was falling out in clumps and I was very near being bipolar! You'll want to get tested at least once a year to make sure that your thyroid levels are where they should be. Good luck with surgery. Just keep your post-op levels okie-dokey.

Wishing you a speedy and comfortable recovery after a "routine" surgery!
Apple: My DH also has Graves. He is doing great now, but got down to 130 lbs when he wasn't getting enough synthetic thyroid (he should be 160). I will certainly second the advice to stay on top of that!

Yes Cytoglycerine my thyroid was removed several years ago b/c I had Thyroid cancer.
You know, I used the Endocrinologist my ObGyn recommended, and they Surgeon the Endocrinologist recommended and everything has gone amazingly well. My endocrinologist is a teacher at the Medical College of WI. I think her specialty is really Diabetes, but they took out my Thyroid and put me on Synthroid and I am fine.
DH complains that I don't have the ability to stay up late anymore (we so rarely party- so it is really not a major deal). I have a very hard time functioning past 11pm or so. On the rare occasion I am up later I can feel how exhausted I am. I see the endocrinologist once a year and she does blood work to make sure the Hormone levels are correct.

Gee, I have the same complaint and my thyroid is in there and working just fine. I think age has something to do with this.

Thyme,
I am laughing at your comment and age may be part of it, but I get so completely physically exhausted if I am up past 11 and have to do more that a few dishes or move the laundry that I can say it absolutely has to do with my lack of an ability to produce any thyroid (TSH?) hormone at all. I certainly can no longer do an all-night cleaning binge or all night studying like I did in college. Thank God college is behind me!

My daughter had graves disease also, she took a radioactive capsule o kill the thyroid. She was losing her hair too. She now takes a supplemental thyroid pill and is doing well. Good Luck on your surgery, I am sure all will be well.

I'm glad you are laughing. I am not trying to make light of anyone's medical conditions - as a messed up thyroid can really lead to problems. But, I guess I am trying to make light of your side-effects, or my old age. Maybe I should get my thyroid checked, because I can never do a load of laundry or wash dishes after 11 pm. Maybe I should get my husband's thyroid checked - he can't do laundry or dishes past 5 pm, or before either!

My prayers are with you. My daughter will have a hysterectomy the same day. I wish your daughter good luck too! I just had my second one (yeah, sucks to be me ) two weeks ago. The way they do it now is much better than the "old days" (I'm 31) so recovery is much quicker. I was back to work after a week and a half (both times) and I have a physical job.

How do you have a second hysterectomy? They don't take everything the first time, it still doesn't help so they go back and take more New technology gives the doctors more options now, so that's a good thing. But, out of hundreds of hysterectomies, I'm only the second one my doctor has had to go back in on.

I wish you the best possible recovery! My best friend lost 1/2 her thyroid last year but has done well on thyroid replacement. As other posters have said, it's very important to monitor your Synthroid levels. Her initial dose had to be ramped up several times but she is now just as hyper and aggravating as ever. Seriously, my thought and prayers will be with you next week.

Most people gain weight when they aren't getting enough thyroid hormone. If I could lose weight without my thyroid pills, I'd toss 'em tomorrow and drop a few pounds! (haha, not really, but that would be an awesome side effect)

Cyto: Good luck! The worst part of the post-thyroidectomy process will be adjusting your meds, which may take a few months. During that time, your hormone levels will be all out of whack and you won't feel like yourself. Once the synthroid is at optimal levels, things should even out. I would encourage you to begin a diet and exercise program as soon as you are feeling healthy, because even with synthetic hormones, your metabolism will never be the same. So it is better to stop the weight gain before it starts.
I will say a prayer for a safe surgery and a speedy recovery!

Good luck with the surgery. I had thyroid out due to graves disease and just to let you know....... your neck/ head will make it look like you weigh 400lbs after surgery. It dosn't last long but don't let any pics be taken from just the neck up.

Third here for Grave's disease. I still have trouble keeping on weight and I no longer have a thyroid after taking the radioactive iodine pill. I'm now on Synthroid. Keep those TSH levels checked and make sure they read the numbers correctly! Good luck and lots of well wishes for you!

When I had my thyroid out (no cancer) all I needed for pain was 12 hours of Tylenol. That amazed me. I am doing great without the thyroid for 5 years now. Best of luck.
