LOVE this thread! For some reason I cannot say that. It always comes out red-pecker. So now DH just calls them that too. LOL!

They are even worse as red-pecker heads when they peck during your golf back swing. Or decide your house siding is tasty, indeed.

actually, i have not seen the two young ones as much lately...you can sure hear them...i think when they were just learning to hunt, they were on the ground more...now that they are more proficient, i have only seen them breezing thru the trees... yesterday early morning, i could hear them so i was going out on the back deck, slowly and trying to be quiet, and right behind me...

I am sure I would see a shore bird on your vaca. I like your signature quote. The wind has no use for names but is a living entity that used to buffet me anytime I was on a stopped ski lift.

The TV birding show is on NBCSP at 1:30 p.m. CT channel 71-5 for me. Reruns might be available on the NBC website. This week was rare birds in Columbia, South America.

On a walking trail yesterday I saw a Little Blue Heron. I thought it was a Great Blue Heron but no. Coincidentally, I got home and the newspaper had a photo of a GBH.

HI Artemis! I've been AWOL for a while... busy busy busy. I don't feed the birds in the summer, but I keep my birdbath filled with clean water. I've notice lots of different birds taking a bath or a drink, esp during this heat wave! By the way, remember that book you told me about? Red Earth, White Earth? I finally got it thru inter-library loan and I loved it! So, thanks!

I hope your busy, busy has been fun. You are welcome on the book and thanks for saying something. It was a real eye opener for me. Another interesting book is The Language of Flowers by Victoria Diffenbaugh. There is a webpage for it that has a dictionary of flowers and their meaning. I keep a bird bath also. It gets messy about every other day. I am delighted to watch the little house finches. Some times they will water walk while flitting when they don't know how deep it is. I have some dark scratches on the bottom to give them an idea. Then there is the mourning dove that just puts one foot in at a time. The robin that looks like to escaped a dogs mouth. He bathed several times. His tail feathers were close to shredded. A lot of times the robins show up looking like they took a mud bath. They thoroughly wash. Have a great 4th. The golf course I played this morning had US flags for the hole flags.

We had to buy a new birdbath. Too many windstorms in the last few years kept knocking ours over, and finally it got a leak we couldn't repair. We've had temps dancing around 100 degrees the last few days, and the birds seem to appreciate that cool water.

Some of the birds like sprinklers, too.

When men watch birds, women get mad? What? Do you have another meaning for watchng birds? My DH watchs and feeds birds. Ladies, draw your blinds! ------------ I tattled to the neighbor that the wood peckers were on his house. Now they are on my fence and even sorting seeds at the bird feeder.

I tried to help the male house finch whose eyes looked damaged only to scare it into a construction area. At least cars won't be drving over the top of it.
On the better side, I saw a huge group of Grebes on a lake. There were other ducks but I couldn't get a good ID.

I saw a lovely prairie falcon on a walking path today. Native American lore says hawks and falcons bring messages. If it had a message I wasn't consciously aware of it. Anyhow, it scared the flap out of some mourning doves when it took over their tree.

By the time I ran to get my camera, my favorite bird had flown away.. He sat outside my window all dressed up in his suit no man can take away.. The blue jay, dressed so beautiful in all its heavenly attire..

I think I have bird telepathy. I love to hear the sandhill cranes when they fly over on their migration. Although they were very high, I heard and saw them as I walked to the mail box.

Freak out here. I was going to post about the rose breasted grosbeaks that have been frequenting our feeder the past several days. The grosbeaks as well as the gold finches are sucking those feeders down. We had a couple of oven birds. A chipping sparrow was a surprise mixed in with the house finches and chickadees. Robins. We have a rabbit that looks in our patio window. We don't try to give it anything because it stays away for days. Last week I was walking and glimpsed two birds that looked like ducks but they flew onto a tree branch. Maybe wood ducks. I told the female turkey to run away, run away or you'll be having chicks.
