Hey Shane, tonight I'm going to the Monumental Mayhem WFTDA regionals It's going on right now, I wish I could sneak out of work and head over there already! Update - 2 NSDs, 3 CSDs, 1 EOD.Tomorrow will be a spend, don't know if I'm going to be able to classify it as CS or just plain spend. We're having a party tomorrow night... have to make a run to the grocery store and the liquor store. Debating filling up the grill tank so we can have hotdogs and hamburgers... hmm. Can you tell I'm the worst party-planner in the world? Should be fun, though.

mid: Have fun! If your region is like ours, the bouts on the first night are mostly blowouts as the top ranked teams play the bottom ranked teams, but it still tends to be a ton of fun.
mizbear: This is the Seattle area, so not all hospital locations need ICUs because we have a ton in the area. The surgeon actually called me yesterday. He felt awful about this. He doesn't think MIL will need an ICU and ventilator, nor did the other anesthesiologist he talked to, but the one who met MIL (ie the fat old lady with asthma) kind of freaked. I get that anesthesiologists are the ones who get sued most often, so its not that we're unsympathetic- its that 13 hours before the surgery is NOT the time to make this decision. Anyway, the surgeon has given his scheduler carte blanche to get us scheduled at the hospital with the ICU, so I'll talk to her today and hopefully get it worked out.

WOOHOO!!! Yeah for Happy Hour. I have new drink after last weekend UV Cake Vodka and Root Beer. The bride's frugal sister hid the vodka and rootbeer in the hostas outside of the back door of the reception hall and the wine was in the bushes. ;D

Just got back from the graveside service for my aunt's mom and they had wine at the house for lunch! I didn't imbibe but would love a drink later tonight.
Also had a great call with a perspective client this morning and am looking forward to connecting and hopefully adding him as a client before Monday!

Mitten - It was good. It also cracked me up. It was total something someone from my college would have done. The next morning she went back to get the left overwine and a hotel worker was cleaning up and found it and just shook his head and she (sister of the bride) was like just keep walking, just keep walking.

UPDATE: 7NS, 7NEO, 7MOAN I am beat. But I am also getting a lot done. I might actually meet my Level 1 Sales Goals for my bonus this month! I had a girl start a book party and she was out of books before I left the grocery store! YAY! I think if I had alcohol here, I would probably sleep until at least noon tomorrow. But a drink or 3 does sound good and TBear decided to stay home. I am putting my DGMs house back together and tring to get mine ready for my grand opening party for my business. I am really excited. HUGS to everyone. I think I need to go to sleep so I make sense.

Evening ladies -- We had perfect weather here. I was able to get outside and walk twice today. I should sleep well tonight. This weekend's project is to re-org my closet. In the process, I will get the bags of things for Salvation Army out of my reg closet. I've lost an inch or two. I hope to resume Zumba in the next month or so, if this is the case, I'll lose another inch making the several items of clothing that are too big, downright huge. So, I have bag of too big clothes and can't decide if I want to get rid of all of them or not since I haven't met my goal weight.
Shan -- I'm surprised your MIL's surgery was scheduled at a surgical center instead of a full-service hospital with her medical history. I hope it is resolved quickly. I would hate for her to have to go through all of the pre-op work again.
Mizbear - The DC Metro area has limited hospitals as well. Actually, they are preferable for healthy people. Two of my knee surgeries were performed at Fairfax Surgical Center. Good luck with your party.
MK -- I'm partial to Thor. He looks so cute.

Thor is a big nummy head. He and my DSIS dog have dug up one of my sprinkler heads. I really debated paying the $65 for the winterizing but since it is the guy who installed the system and he fixed and REPLACED the head they messed with fully worth the cost! While a lot of places would do the winterizing for $40-$50 since he fixed that WELL worth the cost.
I have my DSS here. The boy drives me nuts. I had to remove DS#1's desserts for his school lunches to the basement where DSS never goes and rearrange my freezer. I have figured out my problem with him. IF he were to be a productive member of our household, be thankful instead of feeling entitled and not be a pig I would feel lots better about him. The last time he was here my mother bought cherries for the household. He felt FULLY entitled to grab 15 large cherries and thought that was okay. He grabbed them at one time and he was sneaking them. Yes fruit is healthy BUT if you eat a lot of it then it is not. Plus they are expensive and for everyone NOT just him. Can he go home now? Please?

I can't believe how quickly this week went. Definitely miss the beach. I'm feeling in a total funk amd don't know if it's the abrupt change in weather or my upcoming birthday blues, the aunts mom that just died bringing up bad memories or coming up on a year after my grandpa died (the day after my bday). Whatever it is I'm in a weird place. Need to get a whole lot done tomorrow so I made a nice long list and if I can het it 50% accomplished I will be ahead of the pack. Also my mom requested a birthday gift list which I always hate doing. I have so much I cant think of much! I did point out some sheets I like, books I'm always buying for work and the nice little villa in Mexico Okay, time to sleep. I've got to wake up in a few hours for a follow up with a potential client. Fingers crossed this client will help me double my revenue this month.

update; 7 NSD, 0 NEO, a good week. Thanks for the Red Rose. I had it Friday morning with a toasted bagel and strawberry preserves. I have been sick the past 2-3 days. I spent one night in the bathroom and the next day over a bucket. I still don't feel good but I am starting to eat more tea and toast. I opened a bottle of coke and am letting it warm because that always makes my tummy feel better. Hugs to those that are on lay-off or soon will be. Congrats to those that have new jobs. The kids pictures look awesome. I wish I knew how to get the picture of all of mine from DS's file and put it on here. Maybe I will ask him sometime. For you computer wiz's out there; why does this computer say that I am not the administrator of my system? I put a program on but it won't allow me to delete it. It keeps saying that the administrator is the only one that can do that.

sapphire- Funny you bring up Fairfax. In the late 70's, early 80's- Fairfax was THE place to go for any type of surgery. My late paternal grandmother had all of her heart surgeries done there (after having the first couple done there, she refused to have the others done anywhere else- luckily her surgeon was allowed to do surgeries in both MD and VA and had surgical privileges there. 3cats- If DS does all of your computer work, is it possible that he has himself as admin and forgot to give you the password/ list you as one of the admins? I don't have all of that on the computer right now, but am getting ready to since this is now a business computer temporarily. It will go back to being my personal computer when I have enough for a desktop or second laptop. Today was a Spend and an EO but it was worth it. I needed a break. I picked ZBear up from her overnite party, we delivered my FIRST official Celebrating Home order (to my DM/DGM- but hey, they are still customers), picked up Arby's, and went to her place. TBear was thrilled. I knocked on the door and she answered. I said "We brought lunch- hope Arby's is okay." She picked me up and carried me in the house over her shoulder! HUGS to everyone who needs them. 3cats- I hope you feel better- but I'm Fedexing your hug.

Update: 6 NS day & 2 CS days
Hootieman -- Welcome to our group!
Startsmart -- Glad your conference and vacation went well.
Honey and ?? -- Sorry about your job situations. Both of you are talented women who deserve better.
All -- I am still buried under powerpoint. Hope to finish all of them by the end of this week. But it is slow going. I did survive parent conferences earlier this week and the craft show was successful. I never expect to make a lot a $$ so as long as I can pay for my booth space (which I share with friends) I am thrilled.
Well back to PP. Will check in as I come up for air.

If I've missed you, PLEASE let me know. I'm not trying to ignore anyone, but I am a little out of it. So just post your update again, or PM me, or send me a swift virtual kick in the pants. Honey – I about fell off my chair at the “Really? That's an upgrade cuz I feel like shit†comment. I'm going to steal that one. Red – I think you've got a good plan for debt paydown. With a reasonable EF, I don't see stopping savings for a few months as a problem at all. Dakota – great find on the snow gear for mini-d. I love finding new or new-ish stuff at second hand stores/sales for super cheap. Sheila – congrats to The Boy's Knowledge Bowl team. Sapphire – good to hear the weather is cooperating. I personally hate washing dishes, especially by hand. It would be relaxing, but I inherited my mom's back problems so it's excruciating to stand at a sink for more than a minute or two. Shan – how frustrating! I'd be rather upset with the docs too! MK - on the long timeframe for hearing back on an interview, I can understand why they'd take so long. I wait until I've got everything lined up to bring in the people I've selected for orientation before I call any of the interviewees. Plus sometimes I need a day or two to see who sticks out in my brain as having made a good impression. Financialpeace – If I remember right, you have a DH who has a very steady/secure job, is that right? Being laid off is never fun, though. Mid – ooohhh, I love planning parties! In fact, I need to start planning my “I paid off my student loan!†party for next month. Hootieman – great job on the no spends! (your post also reminded me to switch from “hi ladies!†to “hi everyone!†* blush *)

7/27 NSD
Good thing I did a pantry challenge last month. When I went back and totaled my grocery expenses for the past month I spent way more than I thought. Much of it was a really good meat sale. Still, I really need to get my act together and get things back in line.
I have been absent the past few days because I have been doing some intensive research on LTC insurance. Lord, is it expensive. It will never get any cheaper of I keep putting it off, though.
It has been a very cold and damp weekend here. I finally caved in and turned on the furnace. To think last week I used the AC a couple of days!

Update: 6/20 NSD Saturday DH and I drove up to the MN State Fairground for a huge used book sale. Found about 20 books or so that were on our "lists" All for less than $20 so not a bad haul considering. But seriously- people- showers are an EVERY day thing! Sunday- DH, DS and I went to see Real Steel. It was pretty good- mostly a father/son type story. DH and DS both cried a bit during the movie. Today it's back to the grind as usual. Any spare good ju ju you can send DH's way I would appreciate it. Remember back this spring when an old contact called DH about a possible position with his company? Well we didn't hear anything more about it until Friday when the HR lady with the company called and wants to discuss "several opportunities that they think will be a good fit for DH". He is supposed to talk to her today. He is getting really frustrated where he is. At his current place after 3 years they still have him as a "temporary/seasonal" employee. There is zero room for advancement and they are really taking advantage of him and screwing him around.

9/20 No Spends.
Had the family over on Sunday to celebrate all the adults birthdays. Oy Vey What a nightmare with drama.
DS#2 has been sick the whole week. He is looking better today but I am debating taking him in to have them look at his ears.
No weight loss with all the drama, sick kids and that time of month. Oh what fun!
Sheila: Good luck with DH's "opportunities"

hootieman: Welcome Sheila: Good juju for DH coming your way Reenee: I'd volunteer, but that's the week MIL's surgery has been rescheduled for, so I just don't think I can do it. sapphire: It was scheduled at a hospital, just one without an ICU. But, she's now been rescheduled for Wed, Oct 19, in the afternoon. This is good because I won't have to get up before 4am, bad because DH will have to miss a day of class- but the help she'll need in the shower requires 2 people.
Update: 2 NS + 6 CS = 8 of 26 Saturday was almost an NSD, as I only spent cash allowance I had, until we noticed that Junebug's lymph nodes were very swollen (result of a bee sting on Thursday), so off to the vet at 9:30pm for three shots and three Rxs- can't complain, though, cost was under $100, and this is what savings are for.

Hello everyone from this week's captain! QOTW - When you’re looking at your spending, do you find that you generally purchase name brands - or are generic brands just fine with you? Is there anything in which you have to have a higher quality version? Do you find that you end up spending more money this way? COTW - Identify the items in which quality is important (trash bags and mattresses are at the top of my list). See if you can use this to re-tool your budgeted spending such that you’re spending money on what you really value, and saving on the rest. This is an issue that has cropped up repeatedly for me - the latest example was when our DVD shelf literally exploded last night . I’m pretty sure it came from Big Lots and the plywood just eventually gave out. But as I picked up DVDs (several of them cracked), I wondered how much I really “saved” by getting the $50 DVD shelf vs. the $150 DVD shelf. At the same time, name-brand food is pretty much wasted on me - I taste zero difference between Kroger Raisin Bran and Kellogg's Raisin Bran, so figure I may as well buy the cheapest version. Reenee Thanks again for organizing the weekly captains, it's such a great idea. ses We had a great meat sale at Kroger this week... they're hard to pass up, aren't they? Pointy Awesome on the no QVC! Sheila Good juju coming your way on your DH's job opportunity! If the HR person is calling HIM, that sounds pretty promising. Mitten You're doing great with your no spends! Sorry about the drama, what is it with adults acting like children? Shane Hope Junebug is doing OK, and really hope your MIL's surgery goes through this time! Update from me... Other than the DVD shelf explosion, it was a good weekend. Our party went well and - get this - my friend's BF asked her to MARRY HIM during our game of Apples to Apples! He was acting sooooo nervous and DH had tipped me off that he had the ring with him, so I managed to work my way over to the camera and get a few good shots Spent more than I wanted at the grocery store, but it was worth it for a fun party. Have the day off from work, am relaxing here and listening to the KA-BLAM of walnuts hitting the shed's tin roof. They are like missiles when it's windy, I'm a little afraid to go outside. Luckily our vehicles seem to be out of the fire zone.

reenee- Sooo jealous of your chart! It's prettier than mine. Good juju for everyone who needs it. QOTW: I am not name brand specific as long as the product works/tastes as good as the name brand product. For instance, I am very picky when it comes to chocolate syrup. For making chocolate milk- it MUST be Hershey's. I will use Ovaltine powder, but I dislike Quik by NEstle- I have to use waaay too much to get the proper flavor. I will use store brand ketchup IF it tastes close to Heinz, but NOT if it tastes close to Hunts (Heinz has more vinegar I believe). I am name brand picky on bunny rabbits and foo-foo. I refuse to smell of Aunt Flo and B.O. Not attractive. And it's not a deal if it leaks or doesn't work. Jewelry is all wal-mart almost. I pay more for my SB than I do for my cards of hypoallergenic earrings. COTW: The things that I am totally dead set on brands- I can usually get coupons for to make them extraordinarily inexpensive. The exception being if I go with the monster boxes of trash bags at wal-mart. I don't even pay for my name brand pasta because I buy it 10/10 with $1 off coupons. Maybe I missed the question.

QOTW: Mac & Cheese has to be Kraft if its from the box. The Kirkland brand is yucky. We buy a specific kind of andouille from Trader Joes because DH doesn't like the taste of the Adele's, which is all we can find at Safeway or CostCo- Safeway used to have an andouille in their store brand that we really liked, but they no longer carry it here. And I drink Coke- not Pepsi or generic cola. But for us, that's pretty much it. For MIL, though, its a different story. She will get it in her head that a specific brand is the only thing that works/tastes good, etc, and it can be a fight to get her to accept anything else. We pick these fights carefully- the savings has to be significant to be worth the hassle of convincing her to at least try the product- because she will simply throw things out or give them away if she decides they are not exactly what she wants- wastes more money than it saves at that point.
COTW: We shop at CostCo and buy in bulk, and for the most part do our best to get good deals all the time. The andouille is the only thing that we just buy, whatever the cost, because we don't go to TJs often so don't see the sales, and we only buy it when we need it. For the Coke, we only buy when its got a good sale. For 4th of July and Labor Day, they often have buy 2 get 3 free sales and we stock up, often clearing out the inventory for my particular kind of Coke (diet with splenda). But even with coupons for name brands, we check against the cost of the generic.
That's on regular expenses. Things like cars, furniture, the every once in a while things, we always go with quality over cost. For things that are going to last years, lasting 10 years instead of 7 results in major savings, even if the initial cost was higher.

Update: 7/15 NSDs
The allowance system is working really well for me so far. I blew all my allowance the first day due to an unplanned trip with a friend, but knowing I only have to hold out until this Friday to get more has kept me from spending any money unnecessarily. It is also helping DH but not as much as it is me.
I don't know how you all keep up on the conversation here. By the time I finish reading everything, I have no idea who said what and what all I wanted to respond to. I'm going to have to start taking notes or something. I know somebody said something about my DH having a great, stable job. That is true, and my layoff will not ruin us financially. It will just limit our saving. The biggest problem I am having with the layoff is the emotional issues. I have days where I feel like such a failure and so worthless. My job paid horribly, and I hated it, but I would much rather have left it for a better job than to essentially be fired from it. There is hope, though. My DH has finally agreed to move out of the area. He has an interview in Washington state (we currently live in Oregon) next Monday. It is in a much larger area that should hopefully provide more opportunities for me than our current town. We should also be able to find a cheaper apartment than what is available here. There will be additional expenses involved, though, with the move and the travel for the interview. Hotel, gas, and food. I'm really glad we have been good so far this month and that should continue the rest of the month when we are home. That should offset some of the additional expenses.
QOTW - When you’re looking at your spending, do you find that you generally purchase name brands - or are generic brands just fine with you? Is there anything in which you have to have a higher quality version? Do you find that you end up spending more money this way?
This is something I am terrible about. DH is worse than me, though. I have recently started making an effort to experiment with buying generic items, especially at the grocery store, and continuing to use them if the quality is comparable to the name brand. I know I spend way more money than I need to because of my name brand bias.
COTW - Identify the items in which quality is important (trash bags and mattresses are at the top of my list). See if you can use this to re-tool your budgeted spending such that you’re spending money on what you really value, and saving on the rest.
Quality shoes are important to me. I have a pretty high arch and shoes that are not supportive enough will make my feet hurt really bad. Right now I don't think there is anything I need to buy where quality is super important. I'm working on shifting more and more toward generic if it is significantly cheaper.

QOTW: DH is way more wrapped up in brands and buying quality than I am. He was 100% convinced that DS needed Nike gym shoes because kids would make fun of him if he had an off brand. DS couldn't care less what brand of shoes he wears. DH will only buy his special brand of coffee too. As for me- the only name brand or brand loyality I have is for my tampoons. Yup- after the honest to god shortage, manufacturing snafu last year I am stocked up on them. I buy them for stockpile whenever Walgreens has their buy one get one free sale.
COTW: Not sure how to accomplish this. I don't have a seperate line item for girly supplies. DH's coffee and that is just something I have learned to budget into the grocery budget.
I do agree though that you get what you pay for. With furniture and clothing. I would rather buy well made items than the cheap items.

Update: 5NS, 7NEO
QOTW: I'm pretty much all for using generics, unless I can get the name brand on sale so that ends up being the same or less. We do have brand loyalty to a few things:
Steak Sauce (We tried the off brands and each used up the bottles of B-2 and 59 sauce ;D, which were awful and vowed never again.) TP (I use a lot more of the cheap stuff, so for me I think it is a wash on the cost, since I use so much more of the generic.) Kleenex Magic Erasers (The generics just didn't do the job).
I really try to make stuff at home when possible. In fact made roasted red pepper hummus last night. It is very yummy. Plus I have 4 bags of chickpeas in the freezer to make more later.
I think I've finally convinced DH to spend a little more to get better quality on bigger items. He is in the cheapest is best mindset, but I've started using the cost per day with him. (ie we spend $500 today and use it for 500 days or we spend $750 today and use it for 1000 days)
COTW- Hmmm...that will take some thought.
Shelia- Good luck to DH
Financial Peace- When I'm not swamped like I am now, I open a Word doc and type responses as I read, then just cut & paste.

Hello, I took a few days to just "process" and will have some updates and a response to the QOTW in a bit - but first, some notes for my fellow NS'ers redwagon - Hope you had a great time on the cruise. muttley - I saw the pics of Ben on Facebook - what a cutie! mitten - Congratulations to your DF on getting the job. And all FOUR of your "kids" are really cute. financialpeace - So sorry to hear about your layoff. Will extending you into November give you medical through Nov. 30th? If you ever want to talk or discuss strategies you can send me an e-mail. I can empathize with your feelings as I went through much the same last week. Try to remember however that is really is NOT personal. Usually it is some pencil neck at a home office just looking at numbers and not even names of employees. As to moving out of the area - remember NOW to keep track of all job search expenses as most of them are tax deductible even if you do not usually itemize. See page five of the IRS Publication #529 which I have linked below. www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p529.pdfstart - I would attribute a lot of how you are feeling to the anniversary of your grandfather's passing. Even when we are not consciously aware of the impact such milestones have on us, our inner self does. Let yourself go with it and remember all the great times you had with him. This year was the 10th memorial of my grandpa passing and it hit me like a ton of bricks. By the way - if the parents DO come through with the villa in Mexico give me a call. Seems I will have time on my hands to take a little jaunt south of the border. 3cats - You poor thing! I am so sorry you have been so sick. Take care and rest as much as you can and get better quickly. That is an order young lady !!!
