Piggy: Last word. AZ: Last word. Piggy: Last word. AZ: Last word. Hehe. I'm functioning on a couple of hours of sleep so I'm not at my best today. I do think the Doc (and the rest of you) are really intelligent, interesting people though, and I feel like a noob sometimes. It's a very humbling experience.

I agree with Loop, tanning isn't exactly healthy. Have you SEEN Jersey Shore?!?!

Have you SEEN Jersey Shore?!?! Nope, is it any good? I agree with Loop, tanning isn't exactly healthy. Maybe not, but I gave up smoking, don't do drugs, rarely drink, exercise, and with Loop doing the shopping I've all but given up any kind of junk food or candy. If my only vice is a little sun damage now and then, it's really not that big of a deal.

I'd say that Pig is in his late 40's to early 50's based on what I've seen. So unless he's actually in his late 50's early 60's, he's full of crap Granted, most of that impression is based on the tacky mustache. I'm also biased against orange people.

Difference being that you actually have the potential to tan. I have the potential to get horrible skin cancer and die. I agree with Loop (words you never thought you'd hear )....I'm also pale and each year would start the summer season off with some nasty sunburns (and a few to the point of blistering). My skin did tan after the burn. At age 35 I was diagnosed with melanoma...it's really not worth it if you have skin that wasn't mean to tan

I agree that tanning makes most people's skin age faster. I am 41 and used sunscreen on my face every day for decades. My face looks very good (if I don't say so myself). I didn't think about my neck though, so my neck looks older than my face. Nothing like looking at a picture with creases in your neck. I wish I could go back and protect my neck too.
I guess that since men just look distinguished as they age, you may as well tan and look very distinguished when you hit my age. Otherwise I would recommend a good sunscreen for face and neck, and forget the tanning.

People afraid of the sun. Why don't you just live in an antiseptic cave and call yourself a trog. Sun is good for you.

I was specific told to AVOID the sun by Fox Chase...you know, the cancer center....sun is not a friend to those of us that have had Melanoma.

MT, the vast majority of people who enjoy the sun do not develop skin cancer. If you're predisposed to it and know it then it's just stupid. The odds of getting skin cancer in the general population is very small. Drinking increases your odds of developing cancer. Will you stop?

Other than having risk factors (pale skin, freckles, frequent sunburn) I was not predisposed to it. Following my risk factors, Dark has the same risk factors that I do yet you seem to be encouraging him to tan and ridiculing those of us that take sun risk seriously... I quit drinking for 5 days last week...longest freaking week of my life

Well, I guess we'll agree to disagree. I'm not living my life being afraid of everything nor do I think other should. Do I think Dark will be hurt by tanning once a week? Not in the least. That's my opinion and you aren't going to change it.

All I have to say is, duly noted. I'm still going to spend some time laying out in the sun and we'll see if I can tan or not. If I get cancer and have to have parts of me scooped out with a scalpel you can all spend the rest of our lives telling me you told me so. Oh and on the looking years older thing; I already look ten years younger than I am, except for my few gray hairs, so maybe some sun will even things out and at 40 I'll just look 40. That's what I'm going to tell myself anyway, so it's settled.

The gray hair is from my dad. He started going salt and pepper at 16. By 30 it was all gray and white. I got off easy actually since mine is still just a sprinkling of gray at 29. I'm also blaming his side for the facial hair thing though. I've seen 15 year olds that can grow a thicker beard or mustache than I can. It's pathetic.

Dark, please do yourself one favor: if you do ever use a tanning bed, don't go in the buff. The nuclear med tech was telling me that as painful as the needles in my leg were, he's done worse. He had to do the top of somebody's ear once...and then he told me about the guy who liked to lay nude in the tanning bed. He got melanoma on his penis. That's gotta hurt like hell. TYIA for heeding this advice

For now I'm not doing the tanning bed thing. I live an area with plenty of natural sun and warm temps, so it's just finding a little time to strip down and lay around like a bum outside. Now that I think about it... I wonder if I can talk Loop into a hammock?

For years I didn't tan either. I thought I couldn't. Turns out I can but it means I have to actually be in the sun for a while many days in a row. Who knew. These days I start my tan in March when I take my southern vacation and maintain it in a tanning booth after I get back. 12 minutes once or twice a week. But that's the one I use. Tanning times will vary with the different machines. I have seen my future, my family wrinkles like you wouldn't believe. I can't make it any worse with suntanning.

I am going to start tanning in a tanning bed this week or next week. I think looking as good as possible will motivate me to stay in shape. I will continue to use sunscreen to avoid the farmer tans while outdoors. If I start looking older than my age, then I will just have to find a much older man, no biggie!

I'm sorry, but my mouth is hanging open at the number of people who think tanning beds/tanning are ok. I grew up at the Jersey Shore. I spent every day from Memorial Day to Labor Day at the beach 12 hours a day. The amount of people that my parents were friends with those years (we had a cabana at a cabana club) that have had melanomas removed is astonishing. I'm sure not all of them were predisposed to cancer. In addition, they looked way older than their age. The spray tans or the self-tanners are great....and way healthier.

In addition, they looked way older than their age. *shrug* I'm a dude. We aren't on some stupid quest to look 20 our whole lives. Hell, most of us look better at 40 than we do at 20 anyway. Looking older while we're young can actually be a benefit.

you'd be surprised. You underestimate how badly my family wrinkles. It's like the loose skin on an old hound dog. Think Sophia on Golden Girls. Bea Arthur just before she died. I'm already saving for the face lift.

I just went tanning for the first time in my life. So far, I don't look any tanner, but I guess it will take a few sessions. I think I'll put an SPF on my face and the accelerator lotion on the rest from now on. I go to the lake a few days per year, and I use sunblock on my arms legs and face outdoors to avoid farmer tans and driving tans, so I don't think I will look too much older than others my age - maybe I'll look the same age as the smokers my age HA HA
