You are almost right . . . dryers are the real culprit.
But I'm married to a guy who previously sent EVERYTHING to the cleaners. He's got stuff two or three decades old that looks new. It's pretty classic stuff so I'm impressed.
P.S. I asked him if that cleaners went out of business after he left Phoenix. Yes, it had, but he swears it is not his fault. Lol.

I don't know... it was my old washer that did the most damage...

Did you feel like you went to a party with CLINTON and KELLY from What Not To Wear?

I like RL clothing. It's even better at Marshalls for more than half the price. Macys also has great end of season RL sales - sweaters for $20-$30. I've had much better success with their clothing lasting longer than other name brands.
However, I don't pay more than about $30 for sweaters, $20 for polo's and $25 for dress shirts. I also don't buy $5k suits like MTL. #tongue#
I worked in a lower end retail company - American Eagle. They gave 40% discount on their clothes and we were expected to wear them on the floor; mostly what was in season. Same with the GAP, but the GAP had more items that were in the store for most seasons so their employees didn't have to buy as much season in and out. My girlfriend the time worked there. Abercrombie also gives a 40% discount. They were recruiting both of us but I decided it was about time for me to get out of retail. She ended up working there a couple years later, after we broke up.

...:::"So a $1,200 boots will costs about $360.... still a bit expensive for my taste for just boots but much better than $1,200":::... Plus, the oohs and aahs you get when someone recognizes them as $1,200 boots. And then, once the current fashion season/trend is over, they sell them on eBay for $400 and make a tiny profit...

My wife bought me some nice IZOD sweaters for Christmas and they costs between $40-50. What is the difference between them and the Armani ones that are $100-250 All of my jeans are designer, retailing well above $100/pair (and often more). Fortunately, I'm always able to find a good deal on eBay and pay no more than $40/pair (in new or like new condition!). In the case of jeans (7 For All Mankind, True Religion, etc.), the real benefit, to me anyway, is that the jeans always come with a 34" inseam, so they fit us tall gals. Plus, they're made in America, which I like. My 7 jeans are very, very well constructed--better than any other jeans I've ever owned--and look better with each wear. True Religions don't seem to hold up as well, though.

One of DS's friends bought her boyfriend a $400 designer wallet when she was a junior in high school. It starts young. Someone forwarded me a link to some site where there was a college student (living in a dorm, so probably a freshman) who was showing off her new Goyard handbag (a gift from her boyfriend). Feel free to look up the price of Goyard (like, at least as expensive as Louis Vuitton).

You are almost right . . . dryers are the real culprit. I typically avoid drying any of my own clothing in the dryer, and especially not my jeans (in fact, I don't even wash them after every wear). Hubby, on the other hand, cares more about expediency and convenience than trying to keep his clothes looking new, and so he prefers the dryer.

I was the bookkeeper for a high class women's boutique in Boulder, CO. The sales clerks and myself were all required to wear clothes that were sold in the store.
For the sales floor, that was a 100% mark-up before any sales or markdowns on things that didn't sell. We had to pay cost + 50% + shipping unless we bought it on sale. Then we paid the lower of his calculation or the sales price.
I never felt like we got a deal. If we had him do a special order for us, he still did the mark up plus shipping.

Same here... my wallet never contains more than the $20-40 allowance I get a week. My wallet costs $30 Do you really give yourself a tiny allowance and tolerate your wife buying $80 sweaters all the time just because? Most of your posts make me want to either hug you, or slap some sense into you. You are not the first one to tell me that:( But we are working on it! But sometimes it does get to me... like how I haven't purchase any new clothes for myself for a a while now; or only recently purchased a new pair of sneaker after the only pair I have had holes in it when my wife have 2 closet full of clothes, more wallets/purses than I can count, expensive brand name shoes and sneakers, etc.

When I worked at Eddie Bauer in 2007, if I wanted to wear jeans during my shift, they HAD to be from the store. Everything else we wore simply had to be very similar in style. Store associates could get a certain number of pants, jackets, and tops at 40 percent off per season, and everything else was 30 percent off. There was a family/friends discount of I think 20 percent. If the store met certain sales goals, associates could buy as much as they wanted of everything for 40 percent off. I made $8 per hour at the time and reinvested most of it, oddly mostly on work clothing for my husband.
My sister currently works for Maurice's and receives a similar discount, although I don't think they have a friends/family discount. She is quite skilled at hiding something in an odd corner of the sales floor and then buying it off the clearance rack.

You actually posted a picture of yourself? Wow! Even from the back, that's pretty brave. Working on finances with your wife is even more brave. Good luck.

I lay out all of our sweaters - $10 or $100 retail price. I agree dryers are very damaging, but the washer can be harsh too.

...:::"Guys don't say stuff like that normally.":::...
Those of us that do have REAL fun weirding out those that don't. I told a guy who normally has bad dress sense that his shirt/tie combos lately have been very well matched. He thanked me and joked that he aimed to please. I told another guy (who I think is a bit homophobic) that his shirt matched his eyes. Boy did he turn red. I live for stuff like that.
...:::"they sell them on eBay for $400 and make a tiny profit...":::...
This is something I have SERIOUSLY considered as a side revenue stream. Working retail and then buying stuff with my discount so that I could sell it for a profit and undercut the store. I'm sure I'd be violating some code somewhere, but I don't want to have to work forever.
I did have a friend who worked at Best Buy as a night job so that she could buy her husband a TV at a discount.
...:::"You actually posted a picture of yourself? Wow! Even from the back, that's pretty brave. Working on finances with your wife is even more brave. Good luck. ":::...
Now every time zib is at the pool or beach and sees the back of a muscular guy, she is going to wonder "is that cawiau". I guess if the guy is sipping a starbucks coffee, walking with a woman wearing designer clothes and designer purses, there is a good chance it is them.

You both make me feel cheap for refusing to part with almost $200 for the pair of Harley riding boots I have my eye on. I guess if I actually rode a HD, I might.... But...a little "warning" about judging those people with the designer outfits and fine furniture. I don't know if other cities have something similar, but there is a consignment store in Tampa called Triage that only takes high end "stuff" for resale. My old roommate would occasionally shop there and she drove a truck for a living. I must say though, it's pretty funny to see an OTR truck driver stepping out of the cab of a semi in designer duds. www.triageconsignment.com/Serving South Tampa with the Highest Quality Service and Merchandise Since 1980

Dang, I live close to Tampa and I want to check that place out and soon!!! I work close to there and I've never been in the place so I cannot say what it's like in there. It's on Gandy Blvd, south side of the road, just west of Dale Mabry and the cross town. Just don't run over the tall guy on the scooter that looks like... <-- that. Now, at Lowes on the other hand...I'm practically on a first name basis with the entire staff..... I don't worry about that. I was smart enough to marry a woman that makes enough to afford her own luxuries. ....this time around anyway.

I've gotten lucky with a thrift store find once or twice. For furniture though, sometimes those consignment shops are really expensive. I donated a table and chairs once that the thrift store priced for as much as I paid for it new. And someone bought it!

My son dated a girl in college who worked at a clothing store in the mall. Something along the line of Gap, or BR. She had to buy something every week. Shirts were around $50, pants started at $75. She was paying rent on an apt, tuition, car insurance, etc. The other girls that worked there were just there for spending money. Lived off of parents. DS's girlfriend only worked there a few months, but I really felt sorry for her.

It may or may not be too much money - but the bag looks pretty masculine.
Maybe if you say "That would look great on me - buy me one." She'll chicken out.

Or why don't you tell her for every item of clothing/purse/footwear she buys, one goes to a consignment shop.

Or why don't you tell her for every item of clothing/purse/footwear she buys, one goes to a consignment shop. Tried that and it back fired. She packed two garbage bags full of clothes and donated them to my mom church. She is still waiting for me to take her shopping for the replacements

Tell her you will take her shopping for the replacements with the money the church gave her. Consignment and donation are different things. Consignment is where you take a dress you paid $400 for and sell it for $50 after it being on the rack for 6 months. It gives you a pretty good reality check on how much value your used crap really has.
