This weekend my daughter made her own lunch - completely. She opened a can of soup and cooked it on the stove. My son microwaved his own hot dog. Thanks to whoever said that at 8 years old they were using knives and the stove. My kids are clearly capable, I've just been overly protective. I also discussed the use of knives with them, and we are going to work on knife skills for the next few months. They are both excited.
I think my biggest problem with them cooking is their height. They are too short without the stool and too tall with the stool - so I'm going to go buy a shorter stool.

Well - I get "FAIL" last night. I made a big deal about how we were going to make kabobs and how fun it would be, and that we get to poke food with long metal sticks and then put them over fire, etc.
My son said "Nah." So, we picked up Chinese food and ate on the couch. Epic fail!
My daughter will be home tonight, and I think she is excited about making the Kabobs. Once my son knows she is doing it - they will both be on board.

We made the kabobs - it was fun, and the kids ate them without complaint. I'm not sure they liked them as much as Dad and I did - but sometimes you take what you can get.

I do find that my kids are more willing to try new dishes if they help me prepare them.
